For the vast majority of my time as an e-fedder, going all the way back to December 1999 (yeah, I've been around...) to now, I've mostly competed and written as a heel character. I found it to be much easier because there are less restrictions on what a heel can and can't do as far as a feud with another character is concerned. However, since I've arrived here initially at the end of last year, I've portrayed faces, with few changes to my character, though I still struggle sometimes with some of the finer points of playing a face.
How do you guys feel about your personal portrayals of face and heel characters?

I've never played a face character. I think (I'm probably wrong) playing a face character seems to limit what you can say so you don't cross the line. Whereas a heel character can pretty much go all out without adhering to any rules so to speak. I do have a great deal of admiration for anyone who can make a face character successful in an efed because it can't be easy. Maybe I'll try it one day.

I do have a great deal of admiration for anyone who can make a face character successful in an efed because it can't be easy. Maybe I'll try it one day. This is the struggle I'm talking about. I thank God for the Attitude Era, or else a face like Stone Cold or The Rock wouldn't seem plausible. I've used this same character for the vast majority of my e-fedding days. The only things that changed from my last really active time with the character to now are his injuries. Still the same person, but his good traits are highlighted more, and his good traits are REALLY GOOD traits. The type of traits, if found out, would possibly end their career as a believable heel (see breaking kayfabe). This is part of why I asked the question, because while I feel comfortable enough to play a face now, I think I sometimes miss a few things, and it can be easy to revert back to being a heel. Fortunately, I can play the PTSD card, so when I do have a "heel moment", somebody will discount it as PTSD. Kind of like when the ladies have their "heel moments", people attribute it to PMS... PTSD=PMS?

Depends 100% on the character.
For example, Steve Orbit was face for two years. He was a face in the ring. Played by the rules for the most part. Focused on the positives of his personality-- that being said, he's from a very rough background, he's a womanizer who owns a strip club, he drinks and abuses drugs, etc. Then again, what American hero doesn't do those things lol-- the point is, face/heel lines can be blurred a little bit. It's nice to have a straight-laced conventional face and a monster asshole heel, there's a place for those characters and some people pull them off very well.
Face and heel are defined by what happens in the ring for the most part. If your guy is sneak attacking and cheating to win, he's probably a heel. If he's the one getting sneak attacked and he's playing by the rules, he's probably a face. From my experience, tweeners are just heels who want to be cheered by the crowd, or they want to be able to align with anybody. That's the other thing about face and heel, they define who you can work with-- if you're a face, you can be friends with other faces IC, but you can't hang around with heels and vice versa.

Let's not forget the longevity of a character. You keep one going long enough, he's going to go back and forth a few times. Johnny was nominally a face when I started, but pretty quickly, he got lured into some shit with promises of title shots in exchange for basically doing the fed owner's dirty work. His ethics got compromised, but he stayed on that path; eventually it all led to the formation of two superstables representing either end of the spectrum, and lots of big fights between the two groups... that fed folded due to OOC reasons, so when Johnny came here, he was still a heel.
And then he met Torture, and he started to mature as a person. Going face again was a slow process; but so is personal growth. So... being a face is somewhat limiting, but there are still shades of gray within which you can work. I think, over the years, I have played mostly tweener/face characters, with any heel leanings being temporary... which probably says more about the state of my psyche than much of anything else...
I don't really have a point, just throwing my two cents in.

Faces are definitely more difficult to pull off, but are most worth the effort. No heel or tweener can measure up to a good face for such a reason. Let's be honest, heels and tweeners are more popular because they are just so much easier to roleplay. When (nearly) anything goes, there's not much of a challenge to create ideas and story lines.

Dusty Rhodes is a perfect example of how to pull off a face.

Oblivion is a psychotic sociopath who is truly a massive UBER HEEL. While Ace slaughter is a true SUPER FACE.

We all know Oblivion volunteers its time at the animal shelter and the old folks home. Granted, Oblivion is scouting for its next sexual encounter, but that's neither here nor there...

Technically, does it matter? We're talkin' about Oblivion here.

The first character I created was face. That was around late 2001. There were a lot of factors that made being face easier on me, and it was more comfortable. I did well as face, but I was far more successful using a neutral affiliation sometime around late 2003. I can't remember if my affiliation was based on a strategy, or if it was my age and attitude of the time that made these decisions. It could have been both? But, I have not been in an e-fed since early 2005. I was neutral then.
I don't want to seem arrogant (although I'm sure the lot of you would get my drift since you've been around the block and understand professional wrestling) but I'm positive and confident I could still rock a face. I coincide that with the enthusiasm and joy I get from being a heel. I've said things in my first two WCF roleplays that I'd never say in real life. Sometimes I surprise myself with what my characters say, but Dan Van Slade takes the cake; though that's part of his character. I always aim for a reaction from anyone, but if I don't give myself any reaction then I feel I'm doing something terribly wrong. I aim to make myself feel like I'm a terrible person every time I post a Dan Van Slade roleplay. In real life - I try hard to be a nice person, but only so far as to say that disappointment won't drive me bat-shit crazy. I want Dan Van Slade to be disappointing, and most of all - hated. My oddball bizarre polar opposite.
It would take a long, long time before I'd want Dan to think about going face, or neutral. He's yet to make any impact. I do wish that I would have started as a face in WCF, but I don't regret being a heel. There's a lot to work with here, and some nice faces with rich personalities that make being a heel easier than I'd imagine.
This is a topic I could discuss all damn day, but I think I'll stop here for now.
Carry on.

I weep at the way the WWF destroyed the American Dream.
