If you don’t understand the title, go back, take a revision of what happened the previous day, and then come back.
The scene opens in a hospital bed in Japan somewhere. The room is white, and very, very clean, hygienic to the last degree. The room is a private one, and a single white rose adorns the bedhead next to its patients head. There are no nurses or doctors hanging around the room – as far as they are concerned, their technology will keep a watch on the patient’s health and mental activity. Two visitors are currently in the room next to the patient’s bed – Katie Striker and Jade Striker are both by their father’s side on Thursday the 12th of July. The two are still in their clothes from the day previous, as circumstances forced them to ignore their hotel and come straight to the hospital where they have spent the night. Jade Striker is pressing buttons furiously on her PDA while Katie hums a simple tune, sitting on a stool next to her father on the bed. Skyler himself lies peacefully on the hospital bed, albeit tied down by the hands and legs, asleep after the ordeal of the previous day. He, too, is still dressed in his ring gear, except that a white smock has been placed over his chest for hygienic reasons. The only sound in the room is coming from the heart rate monitor on Skyler’s bedside and Jade’s voice as she talks into her PDA, acting as a mobile.
Oh, and also, a bell is heard tolling somewhere in the distance.
Jade: Listen, I don’t care how injured he is. My father will not be satisfied until he’s entered that chamber and defeated Creeping Death, Lerch, so you can forget cancelling the Nightmare Chamber. In any case, it’s not your decision, as it’s Creeping Death’s show, and you know that he’ll never remove the match.
Pause.
Jade: So what? Just because he went and injured two stars who you haven’t put on the card in over three months you’re going to remove the World Title from him? You won’t do it, Seth. Skyler is your draw card. He’s making you cash as we speak. I know the financial details, Seth, I have complete access to all WCF files. His merchandise is selling faster than any star in history. At this rate, Cool Wear Inc. will be out of business within a year, you’re selling so much.
Pause.
Jade: Oh, give it up, Seth. You’ve got better things to do than bug me about removing my father from the match. It will happen, I promise you. My word is final.
Pause.
Jade: Yes, we’re still going for lunch on Tuesday. I have a few more merchandising propositions for you for Index Three. Alright, I’ll talk then. Ciao.
Jade ends the call to Seth and turns back to her sleeping father. Skyler’s breaths are regular, almost matching his heart rate, a special technique taught to him by Jade, which his brain has now memorised and perfected. Jade sighs and wonders what caused the attack on Jayden and Dylan, and walks out of the room, leaving Katie to stroke her father’s hair gently. Jade walks to the next room along, which is a double, and has not even entered before she hears the competitive voices of Dylan and Jayden.
Jayden: You’re so going down, Dylan!
Dylan: So how come you’re coming 5th and I’m coming 2nd?
Jade enters to see Jayden and Dylan on opposite sides of the room, propped up on their beds, playing Mario Kart on their Nintendo DS’ with ferocity and a smile on their faces. Jade rolls her eyes and coughs to let the two know of her presence, and Dylan pauses the game.
Dylan: Hey, Jade. What’s up?
Jade: Not much. Seth’s trying to threaten me to get Skyler out of the match, as he wants him to compete at Aftermath. He’ll never do it, of course, as CD has full control, but Seth likes to think he has power.
Jayden: Lol.
Jade walks up to Jayden and punches him hard on the arm.
Jayden: What was that for?
Jade: Using chatspeak. At least retain some dignity, Jayden, or I’ll punch your leg, and you really don’t want that, seeing as you’ll be on crutches for the next three months anyway.
Jayden rolls his eyes and grins.
Jayden: Whatever you say, Jade.
Dylan: Anyway, we’ll be fine to compete as soon as Jayden’s walking again. I’m already taking bookings for Japan for the end of the year. We’re considerably popular over here.
??: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Jade turns around, hearing a scream close by, and a commotion stirs up as well, with nurses running past Jayden and Dylan’s room in the direction of Skyler’s room. Jade nods to the two, who turn back to their Nintendos, and runs into her father’s room. Katie has taken a step back from Skyler’s bed, as Skyler has woken up to find himself chained to the bed and he is struggling to escape his bonds, thrashing around as much as possible and yelling at the top of his lungs.
Skyler: LET ME GO!
After a brief fight, one of the doctors manages to inject Skyler with a low-strength relaxant, and Skyler lays back on his bed, exhausted. He turns to the side slowly to look at Jade and Katie, and tears begin to show up in his eyes. The doctors nod and exit the room once more, and Jade and Katie move close to their father’s side.
Skyler: Alright, you two… I have two things to tell you.
Jade: Father, what’s wrong with you? You broke Jayden’s leg and gave Dylan a concussion. And now you’re trying to fight doctors. What are you trying to do?
Skyler: The reason I did those things was because of you two. I was told by… someone… that our family is going to fall apart very shortly.
Jade: Who?
Skyler: I don’t know. It was a voice, not a person.
Jade: I thought you said the voice left right after War!
Skyler: A different voice. But the reason is that I need to make sure it doesn’t happen. I can barely stand to look at the two of you and think that somehow we’ll be broken up. And for that reason, Jade, you can’t come to ringside tomorrow. I won’t allow you.
Jade: Won’t allow me? What are you going to do to stop me?!
Skyler: Ragnal is going to make sure you stay backstage with him while the main event is on. It’s safer that way.
Jade turns away from her father and pulls out her PDA, exiting the room again, probably making a call to Mike Ragnal. Katie looks at her father, her eyes full of love.
Katie: What you did to Uncle Jayden and Uncle Dylan was really mean, dad.
Skyler: I know, Katie. I know. It won’t happen again. Can you pass me Jade’s pen, please, Katie?
Katie does so and gives Skyler the pen from the bedside. Skyler flips out a small steel object from the pen and with some careful manoeuvring, undoes the buckle that holds his arm down, and then his legs. Skyler enjoys his newfound freedom and grabs Katie by the shoulders, kneeling down to eye-level.
Skyler: You need to stay here. Jade will know what to do. I’ll see you after the match tomorrow, okay, sweetie? Stay safe, Katie.
Skyler exits the room and walks down the corridor, and beyond what we can see, he ends up walking right out of the hotel door, shirtless and in his ring gear, with not a soul noticing. While Skyler heads off, Jade walks back into the room and sits down next to Katie.
Jade: He’s gone, isn’t he?
Katie: Yeah.
Pause.
Katie: Você sabe que Nunca perderá amanhã.
Jade: Yeah, eu sei. Eu sou preocupado mais sobre os danos que fará à morte rastejar.
Katie laughs as Jade stands, and the two walk out of the hotel room, waving goodbye to Jayden and Dylan on the way. The scene fades out as they walk through the hospital doors.
