Obviously the interview with Robin did not go exactly as planned. Cairo could not control his burning passion for Ms. Meade, but at least Cairo got his rocks off. In contrast Cairo's next interview was not with a beautiful, luscious woman. On paper most pundits expected it to be much more hard hitting. Morning Express is a nice little show, but when you want in-your-face political dialogue you go to somebody who knows the score. You go to... Glenn Beck!
Anybody who knows Glenn Beck knows that he is not a man who backs down from his beliefs. Glenn's not afraid to express his opinions and whether you agree with him or not you can't help but say "Wow, that guy comes across as a few sandwiches short of a picnic basket." Cairo, Beck... Cairo, Beck... It doesn't figure to be pretty, but politics never was a beauty contest. Let's go to the tape!
The usual Glenn Beck intro airs, chronicling the night's stories, followed by a shot of Glenn sitting at his desk.
Glenn Beck: "Good evening, America. Leading off tonight's show I have a special guest joining me in studio. There are presidential candidates and then there are..."
Glenn makes the "Eh, I don't know about this guy" face.
Glenn Beck: " ...Presidential candidates. I want to welcome wrestling superstar and conservative activist Bobby Cairo to the show. Mr. Cairo, welcome to Glenn Beck! I know that things went a bit haywire during your interview this morning with Robin Meade. I hope you can keep your hormones under control while you're here with me, big boy!"
Glenn winks at Cairo and then chuckles. Cairo smiles.
Bobby Cairo: "Thank you Glenn, I think I can control my urges and please call me Bobby. You know I've been watching you and I must say that you're one tough cookie to crack."
Beck chuckles again.
Glenn Beck: "Oh really? How is that, Bobby?"
Bobby Cairo: "You move around the set of this fine TV show and you project your big booming voice. It reminds me of Zeus calling out from the halls of Mount Olympus."
Glenn nods his head and smiles.
Glenn Beck: "That's a very interesting perspective. I've never heard that before. Let me ask you a question: You're a superstar professional wrestler, you're an international business mogul, why get involved in politics? Why run for president?"
Cairo gets a serious look on his face, like a man about to drop a deuce.
Bobby Cairo: "My reason for running is very simple, Glenn. Two parties does not a democracy make. We spend all this time talking about Democrats versus Republicans, Republicans versus Democrats. In reality we should be talking about Democrats and Republicans versus the American taxpayer. Neither party is looking out for our interests."
Glenn nods his head in agreement.
Bobby Cairo: "For example, the federal income tax is unconstitutional and that point was proven by Wesley Snipes' victory over the IRS, but yet neither party will commit to eliminating the federal income tax."
Glenn Beck: "That's an excellent point. Out of control taxes, out of control spending, and who really benefits?"
Bobby Cairo: "Exactly. The politicians want to create a welfare state. They charge us these humongous taxes that essentially slash our salary in half and create a reliance on state and federal assistance. It's the same problem with Healthcare. We can't fix Healthcare until the government stops trying to regulate Healthcare. We can't have a fair market and a free market if the government continues to interfere. The problem is that we're talking about the same government that ignores border security and ushers troops off to Iraq and Afghanistan like marshmallows on an open fire."
Glenn Beck: "I'm glad you mentioned that, because I wanted to ask you about that. Is it fair to say that you support a non-interventionist foreign policy?"
Bobby Cairo: "Yes, I believe that our military should be used solely in the role of national defense. I don't believe that we should launch preemptive strikes against other nations in the name of a vaguely defined "War on Terror." We've invaded Afghanistan and Iraq without Declarations of War, which are required by the Constitution, and without even defining whom exactly we're fighting. The fact is that in these two wars 3,491 American troops have been killed in combat, 865 troops have been killed in so-called "friendly fire" incidents, and 14,116 troops have been severely wounded. I have to ask why? What exactly has our government accomplished with all of this senseless bloodshed?"
Glenn Beck: "I think that you can certainly question the justifications for the Iraq War, but you believe that we were also wrong to invade Afghanistan? The Taliban was aiding and abetting Al Qaeda, the same terrorist group that carried out the 9/11 attacks. How can you justify sitting idly by and not retaliating for 9/11?"
Bobby Cairo: "Glenn, we haven't accomplished anything by invading Afghanistan. All that we've done is neglect our borders and our ports and allowed our infrastructure to crumble like so much crumbly cookie dough. These are the same problems that allowed 9/11 to happen in the first place. We can't make America safe by chasing terrorists in the deserts of Afghanistan. We can only make America safe by adequately addressing these issues of national security."
Glenn Beck: "But don't you think..."
Bobby Cairo: "Excuse me, Glenn, I'm still speaking. Terrorists cannot attack America unless we allow them into America. The 9/11 hijackers were people who lived, worked and trained in America for years before they carried out those horrific attacks. Our intelligence community gave us warnings, but did we listen? No, we allowed terrorists to attack and then we created this BS piece of garbage legislature known as the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act is unconstitutional and it's an absolute smokescreen for the fact that we failed to prevent 9/11 and the fact that we're not prepared to prevent future attacks. If we weren't spending $302.2 million dollars per day on these ungodly and immoral wars then we would be able to properly secure our nation."
Glenn Beck: "What exactly do you propose that we do? Should we just immediately withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan and allow any extremist nutjobs to seize power?"
Bobby Cairo: "Glenn, what you fail to realize is that the actions of the American government are terrorist acts. We're not only sending our troops to die, but we're also killing countless civilians. It's impossible to know exactly how many civilians our military has killed, but all you have to do is look at the images of villages that have been absolutely leveled by American military forces. Dead bodies are lying everywhere; women, children and men all indiscriminately killed. How do we justify their deaths?"
Glenn Beck: "I would counter that argument by saying that the bloodshed we've seen in Iraq is not just American military killing civilians. We've seen countless instances of insurgents, namely suicide bombers, killing civilians. The only peace or justice that has come in Iraq has come from American forces and other coalition forces policing communities against attacks from these insurgents. If we withdraw now those insurgents will be allowed free reign to do whatever they want. Iraq could end up with a leader every bit as brutal and malevolent as Saddam Hussein."
Bobby Cairo: "I understand that, but I also understand that our military cannot be used as a world police force. Our military was established by our founding fathers as the first line of national defense, not as a means of waging perpetual war. These attempts that our government has made in the last 60 years, post-World War II and especially since 9/11, to interfere in the affairs of other nations, well quite frankly it reeks of imperialism. The American Revolution was all about opposition to imperialism and yet 230 years later we're falling into the same traps as the British Empire. When will we learn?"
Beck points his finger at Cairo, then taps the desk.
Glenn Beck: "If we had taken that stance during World War II where exactly would the world be today?"
Bobby Cairo: "Glenn, we were attacked by the Japanese military at Pearl Harbor during World War II. America had a clearly defined enemy and we had a clearly defined objective. Congress passed a Declaration of War, as required by the Constitution, and we made sacrifices as a nation to achieve victory over our enemy. However, I do not agree with some of the tactics that we used against Japan and I believe that we were wrong to interfere in the European conflict during World War II. The Germans did not pose a threat to American sovereignty. The Germans did not have the means to attack America."
Glenn Beck: "You believe that we were wrong to oppose Adolf Hitler's Third Reich?"
Bobby Cairo: "I believe that we were wrong to send American troops into battle against an enemy that did not attack America and did not pose a military threat to America. The actions of Hitler and the Third Reich were absolutely deplorable and their defeat was most welcomed, however as I stated we have to be prudent when deciding to commit troops to battle. America is not and cannot be the world police, such an agenda runs contrary to the ideals of our founding fathers."
Glenn Beck: "I see..."
Beck rolls his eyes at Cairo like he's crazy.
Glenn Beck: "How do you respond to the fact that we have not been attacked since 9/11? Doesn't that mean that at least some of these national security policies are working? Isn't America more secure now than before 9/11?"
Bobby Cairo: "Let me ask you this, Glenn. How many times had we experienced terrorist attacks on American soil prior to 9/11? We had the World Trade Center Bombing in 1993 and the Oklahoma City bombing just two years later in 1995. Then for six years we had no terrorist attacks in America. Using your logic that must have meant that we were safe, right? After all, the absence of terrorist attacks must equal safety, right?"
Glenn Beck: "That's not at all what I'm suggesting."
Bobby Cairo: "Oh I know, Glenn. You're not suggesting anything. You're a puppet on a string reading from a script. Let me ask you a question. Do you believe in global warming, Glenn?"
Glenn smiles smugly into the camera.
Glenn Beck: "As a matter of fact I do believe in global warming, I just don't believe these fearmongers who claim that toilet paper and roll-on deodorant are responsible for global warming. If I want to drive an SUV and smoke big cigars, well that's my prerogative. You don't like it? You can choke on it, you big-headed, foot-sniffing weirdo!"
Bobby Cairo: "Oh that's fair and balanced, right Glenn? You're a real tough man with a doofy haircut and a cheap jacket."
Glenn scoffs and throws his hands up.
Glenn Beck: "All right that's enough, Cairo. You're a rude, egotistical prick and you're obviously suffering from roid rage. Why don't you just leave?"
Cairo stares Beck down before storming off the set.
What do we say about Cairo's performance on the Glenn Beck show? Was Cairo needlessly confrontational or did he display key elements of strong leadership? Did Cairo do his grassroots campaign more harm than good, or did he show the voters that he has the courage to stand up for his convictions? In this day and age of political uncertainty it's hard to say for sure exactly what Cairo accomplished, but we do know one thing for sure: Cairo isn't finished yet!
As for Morning Express, Cairo's encounter with Robin continues a disturbing trend of Cairo becoming "overly friendly" with female reporters and campaign volunteers. Will this prove to be Cairo's undoing like so many other promising political candidates? Hmmm.... I guess it's all part of the Cairo Doctrine!
Anybody who knows Glenn Beck knows that he is not a man who backs down from his beliefs.
