Every question has an answer. We just need to understand.
Pull yourself together.
The scene resumes where we left off last time – Skyler Striker, the WCF World Champion, has just been encouraged by his daughter Jade at the top of a skyscraper next to the street where XIII will be held in a few days time. Skyler’s traditional Japanese garments rise and fall behind him in the wind. His silhouetted image is almost scary in a way, but Skyler’s gaze is the most important thing to notice. His eyes are their faint blue, his contacts not in, and they stare at the distance, although nothing in particular is drawing his attention. His face is expressionless, and with only the sounds of the busy street below to occupy him, it seems that Skyler is almost there for no reason – either that or he is lost deep in thought.
And then, as per the norm in Skyler’s strange world, the voice returns. The white void does not reappear, but Skyler hears the voice clear as day, although it appears that no-one else can (minus the obvious fact that no-one else is there to hear it).
??: You seem preoccupied, Skyler.
Skyler does not reply.
??: I know you can hear me, so stop trying to pretend. You’re distracted with this feeling that you think you shouldn’t have.
Once again, Skyler does not move or speak in reply, his gaze not shifting in the slightest.
??: Skyler, the only way you’re going to be able to rid yourself of this feeling is if you ask me for help. Who else can understand it? I know that you’re paranoid about overcoming this challenge and this eminent feeling that something bad is going to happen. So listen to me.
Skyler does not turn his gaze but this time decides to reply.
SS: I’m listening.
??: Good. This feeling, unfortunately, is true. Something is going to happen in a few weeks that will lead your family close to falling apart. But listen to me – whatever you do, you must let it proceed. Things will work themselves out eventually, and your family will be restored. But you cannot change what is going to happen.
SS: So you came to tell me that I’m right, that my family is going to fall apart and that there’s nothing I can do. Thanks a lot, I’ll be sure to keep that in mind.
??: Stop being so ignorant, Skyler. This is life or death. You would be wise to listen close and not to misinterpret what I say. I said your family will come CLOSE to falling apart. What you do will not effect the way the situation ends, the future is the future and it’s already been decided by you. You can’t change the course of events. But above all, Skyler, while this happens, you must fight through it – physically.
SS: What? Fight my family?
??: No, Skyler. Your family will not be there to watch you fight. You will be alone during this time. I cannot tell you how long it will occur for, only that it will occur. Regardless, this is not important. You must keep fighting through this in the WCF.
SS: So while my family may be in danger, I have to ignore it and fight with some stupid little championship belt?
??: Unfortunately, yes.
SS: That’s ridiculous, I won’t do it.
??: But you will, Skyler. I know you will. You have heard my words and when the time comes, you will realise that you will end up having to do what I say.
SS: I severely doubt that.
??: Doubt all you wish, Skyler. I know you.
SS: Do you? Who are you to say you know me so closely that you can predict my actions, to say that you can predict the future?
??: Isn’t that a question that you chose to answer a long time ago?
SS: What do you mean?
??: Skyler, Skyler. Always asking questions. You wanted one from me, and you got one. Every question has an answer. But you yourself answered my question a long, long time ago. Look into your past, Skyler. You’ll find your answer.
And the voice disappears. Skyler is left alone once more on the hotel rooftop. The wind dies down and Skyler’s robes drop to his side. Skyler’s long white hair drops back to his neck and Skyler’s gaze also drops, looking at the floor. A click is heard behind him and Skyler turns to see Jade and Katie Striker, dressed magnificently in a blue and pink kimono respectively, looking up at their loving father.
KS: Dad, can we go to the breakfast room? I’m really hungry.
JS: Truth be told, father, she’s right. We need to get breakfast and straight back into your training regime.
Skyler takes one last look at the skyline and nods to his daughters, going to the door and picking his girls up in each arm before shutting the door behind him. The voice, however, knows that this may be one of the last times the Striker family is united so closely before the ominous predicted period in which the Striker family will fall apart occurs.
