Some people think it’s easy being a child. You don’t have tests or exams or work to worry about, school is incredibly easy, and life is a breeze. Well, I am telling you here and now, as a seven year old child genius, life is freaking hard. How many adults have to go through the legal processes necessary to file copyrights for names, have to be flying every week, have to be watching out as a seven year old for your twenty-eight year old father? How many of you can know that you’ve done a great job like that for so long and then be replaced by some weird girl whose parents were unfortunate enough to have divorced and/or died? Huh? None of you. I’m the one with the good excuse to complain.
The scene today begins in the Striker household, one day after the pool incident. Katie Striker is sitting innocently in her room, playing with her stuffed animal collection which was given to her by Skyler on her second day of living in the house. Katie is dressed as if going out for dinner in a very pretty white dress. Katie’s room is pink and white, pictures of horses and unicorns adorn the walls, and all of her stuffed animals are sitting around a table in the middle of the room, having a tea party. Katie is pouring the animals invisible tea, although the stuffed creatures do not seem to care whether they have tea or not. One wall of Katie’s room, covered in pictures, has a large door in the middle which does not lead to the rest of the house but instead adjoins Katie’s room with her new sister Jade’s. Lights flash in the room from time to time and there is a constant mechanical whir accompanying the lights. Today, however, Katie is disturbed by the lack of sounds and lights coming from the room. Katie pauses briefly and turns to her stuffed animal tea party.
KS: I’ll be right back, guys.
Katie puts down the teapot and stands up, moving away from the table and switching off the lights to her room. Katie has already discovered a way to spy on her sister’s room, and she lies on the ground, peeking under the door crack which gives her a good view of her sister’s room. Jade Striker is standing up and stepping on stools all over the place, shutting down computers and televisions, tape recorders and modems, and when she goes to switch off one rather big piece of her technology, the room is completely silent save the sound of crying. As Jade turns to Katie’s room, we can see her eyes are red and that she is obviously very upset over something. Seeing Jade head for the room door, Katie stands back up and rushes to switch the lights on, sitting back down at her tea party as the door opens. There is a knock on the door and Katie responds instantly.
KS: Come in!
In walks Jade Striker, and once her door is opened, we can see her room is dark but we can see the faint outlines of a suitcase which has been recently packed. Jade wears a strong pair of trainers and some street clothes as she enters and Katie gives her a quizzical look.
KS: What’s wrong, Jade?
JS: Too many things to explain to you, little sister. I’m going to be leaving the house for a time, so I’m leaving you a few instructions. No doubt you’ll have a little more trouble handling the jobs I have for you than I did, but hey – father seems to like you much more than me, so maybe he can help you out.
Jade hands her sister a long sheet of paper, and as Katie reads it, such jobs are seen as ‘clean pool’, ‘feed father’ and ‘pump electroshock machine to thirty degrees’. Katie puts the sheet on her table and puts a hand on her turning sister’s shoulder. Jade stops leaving and turns to her sister briefly.
KS: Be careful. The real world is scary.
JS: I can’t do this. Just.. just let me go. Please.
Katie drops her hand and Jade leaves, closing the door on her way out. Katie rushes to switch off the lights again and watches through the crack in the floor as Jade is interrupted in her leaving by the man of the house, Skyler Striker, walking through her door. Jade’s tears are flowing again and Skyler bends down on one knee, but a look of hatred has entered behind Jade’s eyes.
SS: What’s wrong, Jade?
JS: YOU are, Father. I’m leaving for a time. I’ll be back sooner or later, but probability leans towards later.
SS: That’s ridiculous, Jade! The world is no place for a lone seven year old girl, no matter how smart you are.
JS: Well, maybe you should have thought of that before you pushed me into the pool and insulted me. I don’t want to hear anything else, father. I’m going to stay somewhere for a while, I’ve organised it well already. Don’t try and contact me. Oh – and be careful in your Pyramid Match, Father.
Skyler is speechless, his daughter’s intelligence has given him nothing to stop her with. Jade lifts her suitcase with a little difficulty and walks out of the door to her room, leaving Skyler all on his own – and it is here that Skyler actually loses it. Skyler’s red contacts flash with anger, then rage, and Skyler lets out a deafening roar at the roof, a flame of passionate emotion flying through his eyes as we have not seen since the Fury Crusader. Skyler raises a fist and punches one of the walls hard, although naturally the concrete walls wins and Skyler brings his fist down in pain, swearing loudly, to which Katie blocks her ears for a few moments. As she opens them again, she hears the sounds of crying, but this time it is Skyler and not Jade who is releasing the tears. Katie opens the door of her room but Skyler does not stop looking at the floor, and so she walks over to her father. The six year old girl with a heart of gold hugs her father tightly, and Skyler continues sobbing on the floor of his daughter’s room as we leave this scene.
Fifteen minutes later, elsewhere…
Jade Striker rolls her suitcase up the garden path of the house and folds the handle as she knocks three times on the door. She looks up as the door opens and sees a familiar face, although this time it is in a different light to how she usually sees the person. The owner of the house stares down at Jade and rubs their eyes in disbelief.
??: Jade?
JS: I need a place to stay, and I was hoping…
??: Sure, come inside. But you have to tell me what’s going on.
Jade walks inside with the person and the door closes as we end the scene, the Striker family now split.
I’ve got a damn good excuse to be here, and I don’t plan on moving for a while. No, this family suits me fine for now. Maybe now people will learn to appreciate me and realise I’m still actually part of what makes the World Champion the World Champion.
