:::Scene description goes here! No, this isn't a placeholder; I'm giving you an order.:::
Hank Brown: Welcome once again, WCF fans, to the finale of the Steve Carr interview series. Mr. Carr has finished explaining his actions over the past several months, and then went back even further to apologize for events that transpired almost a year ago. Today he is going to tell us something about Merc, but I have no idea what that something is going to be. I'm very curious to find out, so without further ado, let's hear it.
Steve Carr: Well, I can't wait to tell you and all the fans, but before I can I need everyone to understand why exactly Merc is here.
Hank: Alright, it's your time.
Steve: When Outcast first started Team NCW, nobody considered them to be any sort of threat. It was just two guys, and Ortega really had to be convinced before he was totally on board. Outcast, for whatever reason, is probably the most underrated World Champion we've ever had. I think maybe it's just that he's been gone for such long stretches of time before that people forget what he's done here. I don't know, whatever. Regardless, I knew that just me coming in wouldn't give us that respect we needed either. And the respect is key. Respect and fear. There was no way we would be able to accomplish our goals if we weren't feared at all.
Hank: You didn't think that you would add any intimidation factor?
Steve: No, I didn't. I mean, I've been pretty egotistical the past few years, but I wasn't having delusions of grandeur or anything. I thought, realistically, I've been out of wrestling for several years. People are going to think I'm rusty and washed-up, and that's the people who know who I am. Most of the guys we have here don't have any clue who I am, or they just remember me as the guy who ran the place for a short time.
Hank: So you needed some extra muscle.
Steve: Well, yes and no. That's what I'm trying to get at here, that physical strength wasn't the problem. Everyone looks at Merc and they say, oh, mercenary, hired gun, bodyguard, he's here to be the protection, the attack dog. That wasn't it at all. He was our psychological weapon. I mean here's this big scary guy, comes out of nowhere, no one's ever seen him before. Starts interfering and costing people matches. And that's another part of it, that I had to see how Outcast would react. I hadn't talked to him before this. I was still laying low at that point.
Hank: But you had him help Outcast out, and eventually Team NCW contacted you through him.
Steve: Yes, exactly. The secrecy was another part of the psychological warfare. No one knew for a fact who he was working for. Of course you look back on it now and say, well, it was pretty obvious, but just a little bit of doubt is all you need. Then you put a microphone on him, and he talks about his military background. You think, this is for real, this is serious. Whoever this guy is working for, he's not messing around.
Hank: It's true. That's along the lines of what I was thinking, anyway.
Steve: So then by the time I come in, he's been built up, I've been built up, Team NCW has been built up. And I think at that point we were well on our way to something big. Back then of course I would have said something great, but now I have to say, something terrible. I don't know what exactly. That's just the feeling I get.
:::After that somber comment, the room goes silent. Hank shuffles his notes.:::
Hank: One thing most of us have been wondering is, where did Merc come from? You told us that he trained with you.
Steve: Yes, thank you, I was getting to that. I had been training to be a professional wrestler for a couple years when Merc showed up one day. There's really not much else to say about it. We became friends and then one day he just up and left. I think he felt that he had learned enough, and I'm not sure if it's because he thought he was good enough or because it was then that he decided that wasn't what he was going to do with his life.
Hank: Is that when he joined the military?
Steve: No, and here's where the big secret comes in. When I decided to help Outcast out with this Team NCW thing, I thought about all the things I've told you about how we could be more intimidating. So I called up my old friend David and we talked about it.
Hank: David being Merc?
Steve: Yes, his name is David. You knew that, right?
Hank: I do remember Tim calling him that, so yes I did assume that was his real name.
Steve: Alright, so I called him up and asked if he would be willing to do this, and he said sure. Then I said, well, we need to come up with some sort of angle to this though. I mean, I need you to be like the goddamn Batman coming in here. I need people to be afraid.
Hank: You can't be saying what I think you're saying.
Steve: Are you ready? You better brace yourself. I'm not going to be held responsible if your head explodes.
Hank: Just get on with it.
Steve: Geez Hank, I've never known you to be so pushy. Anyway, what I'm saying is, my friend David, a.k.a. Merc...has never been a mercenary[/b][/u]. He has never been in any military force. The guy has probably never even fired a gun.[/color]
Hank: So who is he?
Steve: He is an actor, basically.
Hank: An actor?!
Steve: Well, on the side. He makes his money as a stuntman.
Hank: But...this is incredible! How is he not a movie star? That's the best acting I've ever seen!
Steve: You'd have to ask him. I don't know, maybe he doesn't want to deal with all that Hollywood crap. But yes, he's an amazing actor, and he's the one who really came up with the idea. I told him what I wanted and he said, well, I'm not going to put on a mask or something stupid like that. So the most badass thing we could think of was a mercenary. It took a bit of tweaking though. I'm sure you remember that tape that he sent in.
Hank: He said that was his friend.
Steve: Well guess what, he lied. That was his job. Lie and manipulate. That's what acting is. But yeah, he started off with this Southern drawl and we decided that was a bit much. I thought it just sounded corny and he wasn't sure if he could keep it up, and I certainly didn't want him slipping out of it at any point. Although, his normal voice is a bit higher than what you've been hearing.
Hank: So, all of this was an act?
Steve: Almost all of it. The military background? An act. Harassing you? An act. That weird thing he did with the shouting? An act. That was fun. I liked to call that "post-traumatic tourette's".
Hank: What wasn't an act?
Steve: Well, I think he did get pretty offended at Jack of Blades. I mean maybe that was an act, too. I have no idea what his political leanings are. We don't talk about that. It was all just a figment of Jack's imagination, or else he was just messing with us too. Which is pretty likely, actually. Either way that was about the time the act started to break down. Like I said he really did take his match seriously, and he really did enjoy it, and he really did decide that what we were doing was wrong. You might remember I actually congratulated him on his acting ability on-camera that time when he was with Tim, but that wasn't an act. It was the truth within a lie. Or a lie within a lie. I don't know, I'm confused now.
Hank: So, Tim was in on it too?
Steve: Yes, he was, but he really was our teacher, and he really does work in the military now, although I'm not sure in what capacity. That was really nice of him. Oh, and all the guys who applied for that secretary job? They were actors too.
Hank: You're kidding.
Steve: Nope. Character development. His idea again. See, look, I have a picture of what Matias really looks like. His real name's George. Good guy.
:::Steve shows the camera two pictures side-by-side, one of the Norwegian with long-brown hair and a silly-looking moustache, and another of the same man with short blonde hair, no moustache and a Yankees cap.:::
Steve: Guy's amazing with voices. He actually has a Brooklyn accent. You would have no idea. Oh, but you know that already.
:::Hank appears to be at a loss for words.:::
Hank: Well, so, uh, um...well...what's next for Merc - I mean, David, now?
Steve: I don't know. You'd have to ask him. Like I said before, he's at his home resting now. I don't know when we're going to see him again here, if we ever do at all. I wouldn't be surprised if he needs to take a lot of time off. Even if this is what he wants to do now, I think he needs to sort his brain out, what with having the deception and the real world bleed into each other like they did. To be honest I'd been feeling a little messed-up myself, but it helped to get this all out.
Hank: Any closing remarks?
Steve: I would like to apologize to the entire WCF and all its fans for deceiving them. However, I would also like them to recognize that in the end, it turned out for the best. At Explosion, I'm going to beat Outcast and put all this to rest.
Hank: And then what?
Steve: World Championship.
Hank: Seriously?
Steve: Yes. I'm back in this now. That's what Merc did for me. I'm excited to be here again. I'm glad to be one of the good guys again. I'm still going to try to work for change in WCF, but now what I'm here for is to compete. I realize now that that's who I am and that's what I do. And that's all I have to say about that.
:::He gets up and walks away. Hank watches him leave with a look of complete amazement. Fade out.:::
