As Slam returns from commercial, the too familiar intro to Muse’s “Hysteria” hits the PA system. The fans’ mixed reaction is understandable, with the Superfans beating down Truth Addiction last week on Slam after their successful title defense inside a steel cage. When the lights on stage strobe white, yellow and blue and the drum solo crescendos, Mark and Marc, the reigning WCF Tag Team Champions, enter the arena.
Kyle Steel: Ladies and gentlemen, approaching the ring at this time, the WCF Tag Team Champions, Mark and Marc, the Superfans!
As their entrance is read off, Mark and Marc walk confidently to the ring. Mark climbs the ring steps and enters the ring as Marc leaps over the top rope and rolls halfway across the mat, landing on his knees. Kyle leaves the ring as Mark stands behind his tag partner and holds up his Tag Team title, taking it off from the shoulder of his blue blazer. They stand there for a little longer than they normally do, as Marc points to the new Superfans “Even better than the real thing” shirt.
Zack Davis: The Superfans receiving a mixed reaction from these fans on Slam, Shannan. They sure have a lot of explaining to do tonight.
Shannan Lerch: Why, Zack, because you don’t understand why they did it? I know why they did it, but I’m going to let them explain it.
The music and lights cut out and the Superfans reach for two mics in the corner of the ring. The mix of cheers and boos continues after the music. Mark points out a “Superfans rule!” sign, claps and speaks.
Mark: So the whole world wants to know: Mark, Marc, why did you do it? What are you trying to say by continuing to assault Truth Addiction after you routed them in a steel cage? Wasn’t that enough?
The crowd mutters to themselves, as if to simultaneously wonder about all of the questions posed.
The important thing the world needs to understand is that we didn’t want to do it. No, we didn’t.
Zach Davis: What? Why is he raising more questions instead of giving answers?
Shannan Lerch: Zach, just listen. It will all make sense.
The crowd murmurs even more as Marc chimes in.
Marc: It’s true, guys. We didn’t want to assault Truth Addiction, but it wasn’t our choice.
Marc pauses and takes a deep breath.
It was WCF’s.
The crowd collectively gasps and Zach Davis voices his frustration to Slam viewers worldwide.
Zach Davis: What!? It’s the company’s fault that they did something reprehensible? It’s the people who pay the Superfans who drove them to perform a blatant act of treachery and show their unsportsmanlike side for the first time!? That’s nonsense!
Shannan Lerch: Shut up! Let the man finish!
Marc: There’s been an uproar in the locker room about me and Mark being undefeated, but being unwilling to accept new challengers. We’ve beaten Exodus twice and we’ve beaten Truth Addiction twice, but that, according to WCF brass, just doesn’t matter. We think it does.
Mark: We didn’t want to make an example out of Truth Addiction, but we felt we had to. They failed to beat us twice, even after making fun of the little, irrelevant details in our work, but they still said backstage that we weren’t for real. I assure you all, whether you’re in that locker room in the back, sitting in the stands here tonight, watching at home on cable or on WCF dot com, that we are for real. What’s worse than us being for real, since we’re undefeated and defending our Tag Titles?
Mark pauses briefly, then looks to the camera.
Being for real with a real mean streak.
Marc: I don’t want to be that performer who has to come out here, week after week, and make examples out of the wrestlers who talk down to an undefeated and strapped team. I could understand it at first, because we were handed these titles by Seth Lerch. That much we can’t argue. What we can argue is that, after we were given these titles, we backed up what we said we’d do. We rebuilt the WCF Tag Team division, as much as the bookers want to deride us for not being booked against quote-unquote “real” teams, but booking isn’t our job. Our job is to come out here, week after week, put on a great show for our fans and work to retain our title belts.
Zach Davis: These guys are making less and less sense.
Mark: That’s exactly it. We don’t want any of this: the heat, the boos, none of it. Truth Addiction getting attacked at the end of the cage match last week wasn’t our fault. Don’t boo us - boo the other performers for putting Chris Avery and Tank Reaper in harm’s way. They got what they deserved for questioning our abilities a second time in that steel cage, but the penance they paid was charged solely by our co-workers. We’re just defending our names and livelihoods by informing everyone in the back that it can and will happen again, should the criticism continue, and it will continue to be WCF’s fault.
Zach Davis: This is madness! What’s gotten into the Superfans!?
Shannan Lerch: Nothing, Zach! This is how champions behave! They know they’re good, they’ve been detracted by this company for weeks, and now they’re not standing idly by anymore!
Marc: We’re done being put on notice by the entire organization that we slave for. We work our asses off for this company. We put our titles on the line when we’re asked to, without question or complaint, and we show up to all the shows we’re booked for. That’s the measure of a good employee, and I don’t understand why you’d lambaste a good employee for doing as good a job as my older brother and I have done. You can’t be much better than an undefeated championship team.
Mark: Oh, but you can, Marc! Let’s call upon the almighty audio-video truck gods to summon forth some proof that we’re even better than this.
Mark lavishly motions to the Jumbotron. An Internet review of regional organizations pops up onto the screen and, at the top of a list of the Top 25 Tag Teams for last week, the Superfans appear ahead by one point, but ahead of a team that will freefall in the rankings.
That’s right: we’re nationally ranked! And we’re nationally ranked at number one! We are a nationally recognized, undefeated championship team, miles ahead of competition in other companies. You’ll also recognize that we’re the only ranked performers in WCF on this list, though Jay Price is given an honorable mention.
Marc: That kid is gonna go places in this company. He’s an undefeated champion too, but do people dump on him for it? No, they don’t. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts getting criticized by the other guys in the locker room, too.
Mark: I hope he goes really far at War this weekend. Which brings me to my next point.
Zach Davis: What could that possibly be? He just blamed the entire WCF for he and Marc’s being criticized!
Mark pauses yet again, the crowd cheering a little here, booing a little there, murmuring overall.
Mark: WCF War, the two-match Pay-Per-View that is pretty much a direct rip-off of the Royal Rumble, where everyone is forced to compete as individuals, even the tag teams. My problem is the same as Marc’s, so I’ll let him voice it.
Marc: It’s simple enough: my brother and I are undefeated, but we don’t have a chance at winning this event - not one iota. Why don’t we have a shot? Because we’re not singles competitors and we’re not individual main-eventers. The guys in the back have pressured the bookers to put the Superfans in a match they can’t win, just so we can be allegedly humbled with an automatic loss.
Mark effusively nods.
Zach Davis: What!? Are you serious, Marc!? Have you both lost your minds!? They’re unbelievably paranoid!
Shannan Lerch: What you call paranoia, other people call wariness, Zach.
Mark: We won’t stand for it, not for us, not for our fans and certainly not to placate the jobbers in the back who want our heads on pikes. It’s not that easy to put the Superfans down and out, WCF. We’re too smart for that and, believe me, we’re one step ahead of you.
Marc: It’s why Tiffany Jane isn’t here tonight. She’s gone to get our costumes for War ready and, honestly, she’s disgusted with what’s unfolded as far as this situation goes. She’s talking with Seth Lerch right now about War, the involvement of the Superfans and keeping our best interests at heart.
Mark: Those interests are the undefeated record, the WCF Tag Team Titles and our jobs. We aren’t going to let some chumps who run their mouths about performers better than them put our claim in this company in jeopardy.
Marc: War is going to be fun, bro.
Mark smiles and adjusts the Tag Title belt on his shoulder.
Mark: It sure will be, brother. It sure will be.
Mark drops his microphone, as does Marc. “Hysteria” plays, beginning at the chorus as the Superfans exit the ring together.
Zach Davis: What have the Superfans just said? Who do they think they are? What’s gotten into the WCF Tag Team Champions!?
Shannan Lerch: Nothing, Zach! I keep telling you that they’re protecting their investment and they’re doing so with conviction! I see exactly what they’re saying!
As Mark and Marc walk up the ramp, they are shaking hands and autographing fan signs. Mark and Marc get to the top of the ramp, hold up their title belts and leave to the back.
Fade to black.
Kyle Steel: Ladies and gentlemen, approaching the ring at this time, the WCF Tag Team Champions, Mark and Marc, the Superfans!
