"Hello ladies and gentlemen, this is Hank Brown and I am in sunny Tampa, Florida," the interviewer perspiring in his formal suit and his face is beet-red as he smiles into the camera standing in the middle of a crowded beach. On the backdrop one can see the sparkling blue of the Gulf of Mexico, merging with the blue of the sky on the horizont; all around him there are people lounging, walking about; Hank has to talk aloud so his voice can be heard over the the sounds of music, gulls screaming, voices and laughter.
"Yours truly was sent down here on assignment to meet and interview the young trio of Chris Hadge and Brandon Phlash, a.k.a. the Breathtakers, and their manager Wendy Phlash, but as you can see I have yet to track them down. Earlier, during a phone conversation with Mr.Hadge we agreed to meet at eleven a.m. at the Clearwater beach. Well as you can see, me and the WCF camera crew is here, and the time is five past eleven. What we didn't count on, is that the Clearwater beach is quite a..." Hank looks around with a little nervous smile and loosens his tie a bit. "...quite a large place. But anyway, I will try to find them."
Hank begins to walk, with camera man in tow, looking over his shoulder and still addressing the viewers at home.
"Meanwhile, I think it would be appropriate to give you some background on our subjects. Childhood friends, a lifetime wrestling fanatics, both aged nineteen, Brandon and Chris are fresh out of Mickey Whipwreck's wrestling school in New York, having been trained there for a year. After returning home, which, from what I understand, happened mere weeks ago, they have contacted the Wrestling Championship Federation offices looking for an opportunity to become a part of the roster nad prove themselves. Well ladies and gentlemen, such opporttunity will be given to them July 26 on pay-per-view, when they-"
"Mr.Brown! Hey Mr.Brown! Over here!"
The camera turns to catch a slender youth in cargo shorts, white tank top and a Hawaii shirt sitting by the seaside bar, smiling and waving to the interviewer. He gets up from the stool as Hank Brown approaches and they shake hands.
"Brandon Phlash, I assume." says the interviewer.
"Nice to meet you Mr. Brown, sir." he replies. "Please, do have a seat."
As they settle down, Brandon apologizes for his partner. "I know Chris and Wendy are supposed to be here too, but they couldn't stand the temptation to check the water," he nods towards the sea. "They will be back in a few minutes. Would you like to have a drink meanwhile?" and before Hank can reply Brandon orders two pinacoladas, a regular one for the interviewer and a virgin pinacolada for himself.
"Why thank you. Would you mind if I started with a few questions, while we're waiting for your partner and manager?"
"Not at all,"
"Very well. So Brandon, before you spoted us I was giving our viewers some background on the Breathtakers. Both of you were trained by Mickey Whipwreck in New York."
"That's right. Right after graduating from high school Chris and I began looking for a wrestling school, and Whipwreck's seemed to be a good choise. He specializes on airal style of wrestling, and it happens to be the style that fits us perfectly. We're both quite small, under six feet tall each, about 200 pounds, and we're not exactly what you would call a power house. So for us the best way to handle the competition, especially in the WCF, where there are many wrestlers who are six foot for, six foot five, is to be quick, to catch them off guard with high flying moves, and try to not let them catch us. From what I see, if we stick to this strategy, sky is our only limit."
"Wish you luck," nods Brown. "Now, a question concerning your, shall I say, gimmick. I have seen your promo pictures and I had an opportunity to listen to your theme music. The multicolored ring attire, the upbeat rock number, which, if I'm not mistaken, is a cover of Chris DeBurgh's song, and now that I've learned about your ring style - excuse me if I may, but to me the Breathtakers really look like an updated version of the Rockers."
Brandon smiles again and shrugs.
" Being compared to The Rockers is definitely a compliment to me, Mr.Brown. Indeed we are inspired by them; or you can even say by the Hardy brothers, circa 1998. However, please do not be mistaken. Being inspired by someone nad ripping someone off are two completely different things. We do indeed wear flashy, bright outfits, we do plan on relying on our quickness and airal skill to get to the top, we do intend on playing clean and fair, but we do not in any way copy or rip anyone off. You can see this as..." he rubs his chin for a moment, looking for a right word. "an evolution, if you will. First came the Rockers; then came the Hardy Boyz; and now, it's the Breathtakers' time."
"Hey! You guys are from WCF right?"
Chris Hadge and Wendy Phlash, both soaking wet, having just emerged from the water, approach. Chris is wearing a pair of shorts, while Wendy is dressed in a bikiny - not a very skimpy one, just enough to cover what needs to be covered. They're holding hands; Chris is smiling from ear to ear.
"Yo, you must be Hank Brown aren't you? What's up? Man, nice to meet you. Sorry we're late, just had to have a swim. The water's superb, man!"
"Hello Mr.Brown," says Wendy, shaking hands with the interviewer.
"Chris, Wendy, pleased to meet you." he replies. "Brandon here was telling me a bit about the Breathtakers' background, so Wendy, perhaps you could contribute. Where do you fit in this team? How did you get involved and what is your role in it?"
"Well," the girl starts, "All three of us we've known each other since we were kids. The guys were talking wrestling all the time, 24/7. I didn't like it at first, just wasn't interested in it, but ultimately they got me hooked. So I guess in time I became more of a fan than they were."
All three of the laugh, before Chris adds, "Di was the one who suggested we try Whipwreck's school, looked it up for us. Fact of the matter is, she was the one who suggested we give WCF a try, too. So we're here now, thanks to her." He pulls the girl close to him with one hand and kisses her on top of the head.
"Alright, now as I am sure you know, the Breathtakers are booked to debut on the Ultimate Showdown PPV in less than a week, your opponents being a rather odd combination of Havoc and Anastasia Petrova. Please discuss," suggests Hank.
"Man, first off, our first official match, and on pay-per-view!" exclaims Chris enthisiasticly. "Starting out like this, it's the best thing ever! tell you one thing, Brandon and Di and I, we're going in there and we'll blow the roof off the place!... There's one thing though, "he continues, now in a calmer voice. "This Russian girl involved, I'm not sure what to make of it. I mean, you know, she's a girl. You don't fight girls. As in, I don't mean to offend her, like she's not in our league or anything, but in general, I couldn't ever punch a girl. I wasn't raised this way man, you know?"
"I agree," interrupts Brandon, who's been sitting quietly nursing his drink, "I too would not ever hit a lady. So in this case what I propose we do, is we try to isolate her partner, Havoc, and not let him tag Anastasia in. Havoc is big, but he is also light, and I think we have a good chance of handling him. Quick tags, double team moves, and not letting him to tag out. That is what we should do to win this match on Monday."
"Sounds like a good plan indeed," agrees Brown turning to the camera, "But we will have to wait a few more days to see if it works out for the Breathtakers. Any final words before we wrap this interview up?"
"Just one more thing," says Wendy and stands up, looking in the camera, as her boys stand behind her. "WCF, we're the Breathtakers. We're young, we're hungry and we're ready. We're coming in, and we're... taking it to the top!"
All three flash a smile as the picture fades to black.
