Aside from the rather ridiculous comment made following Jack’s announcement, Zach Davis was left speechless. There had to be something behind this. Zach knew Shannan was particularly good at observing body language, so Jack must want to use that to his advantage somehow. Maybe in relation to Logan. Logically, Jack had a background with Logan and Striker – Shannan had been known to associate with Logan quite regularly before. Maybe some sort of psychological ploy?
There was no doubt there was a precedent for this sort of thing. Zach had been here for a considerable while now, and he’d seen his years of backstabbing, mind games and vengeance a plenty. The ploy of Seth Lerch back at War III. PC Cradle and Defman’s epic feuding, constantly trying to better the other. The Team of Treachery and the New Dynasty’s war of retaliation. Machinations of men such as Blades and Cairo to toy with their opposition.
The reason Zach had been thinking about Jack’s latest ploy was the same reason he’d been hired. Whereas Shannan plied her trade through watching, observing, Zach made his out of analysing. He would have made quite the detective if he’d been bothered going through all of the testing, but this job was paying rather nicely, despite his comments to the contrary on air. Usually most of what he said on air was just for flavour anyway.
Regardless. The show went on in usual fashion and Zach watched the usual elements of betrayal and destruction fill the show while the good guys got stood on for the most part. However, when the show was done, Zach was out of his seat within seconds. There was someone he needed to talk to.
Knowing Shannan’s attention would likely be on Logan and Blades – he had no doubt she could care less about Striker or Mad – Zach Davis heads to the locker room of the man who’s likely drawn the short end of the stick here.
Rick Mad’s locker area is in total chaos. There’s garbage everywhere, and when Zach opens the door, Mad stares at him, his neck twitching oddly every few seconds.
Zach Davis: Sorry. Wrong room.
Davis backs out and goes down one more, to the room of Skyler Striker, his original destination. Davis had observed and analysed Striker over the year the former WCF Champion had played his part in WCF. And in his analysis, he concluded Striker was one of those rare types you find in wrestling. Not out for glory – although he would not reject it if he found it – but simply wrestling for his family. Men like this were hard to find.
Over the year, Davis had watched Striker evolve slowly from an arrogant rookie into a hardened veteran of the squared circle. One who had been through a war and survived it. If there was one thing he did, it was persevere. His various phases were masks, but they were effective. They kept him moving. Striker had only grown better with every WCF Series match – when he defeated one opponent, he did not become conceited in his victory but rather more determined to defeat the next, and the next after that, leading to his eventual victory over Cairo which Davis had rejoiced in seeing.
And upon his return at XIII, Davis had only seen a further improved Striker – a warrior. One who had given up on nicknames and gimmicks, but who only loved his family even more. And seeing Blades use mind games, unfair tactics to defeat him – that was downright low. And once again, via process of analysis, Davis had come to the conclusion that he couldn’t sit by and let it happen again.
Zach Davis: Skyler?
The superstar looks up from the bench, having been sitting with his head in his hands a few moments ago.
Skyler Striker: Oh... hi.
Zach Davis: I just have to warn you – I think Jack and Shannan are behind the attack on Logan. Call it a hunch. Just be careful – Jack says he doesn’t want you in particular, but I think he’s still holding something back. Anyway, watch yourself.
Skyler Striker: Thanks for the heads up.
Davis leaves Striker to his musings. Zach may be wrong, as so many others have been about Blades, but he can’t do nothing. Shannan may be content to watch people, but analysis requires a reaction, an improvement. Striker doesn’t deserve to be cheated twice.
After all, the good guys have to win sometimes.
