Wrestler's name;
Ethan Free
Gimmick;
"Explosive" Ethan Free, The Icon of Insanity, The Hardcore Marauder
Height/weight;
6'3'', Strong but Flabby 286lbs
Hometown;
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Alignment;
In Japan: Heel
In hardcore American promotions: Face
In other American promotions: Heel (usually)
Appearance/attire;
Free tends to wear scrappy jeans and vests for angles and hardcore grudge matches. His traditional attire consists of plain black trunks, boots, joint pads and wrist tape. The only apparent design is "FREE to be WILD" which is written along the trunks' rear.
Entrance and music;
Free's entrance is very no-frills, modestly either taunting or playing to the fans on his way in, Nick Cave's "Up Jumped The Devil" booming him along his way. He takes his time getting to ringside, plodding and occasionally stopping to look around. When he reaches the apron he repeatedly slaps himself with both hands before bounding up and through the ropes. Once in he begins twitching and laughing maniacally until his opponent's music hits.
Style;
Free is decidedly limited in the ring, often using hardcore spots, crazy bumps and environmental attacks to cover up his weak spots. Far from technical and restricted in agility, he has a strong grasp of the basics and telling a story, and when he's motivated for a big match he becomes a big explosive brawler with some innovative and gruesome offense. Aside from his natural affinity for the performance and shock value side of wrestling, another protective barrier for his limitations is the massive pool of charisma he taps into both during and between matches. He often plays up his insane character to get fans immersed, before blowing them out of their seats with death defying climaxes.
His work in Japan brought particular attention to his brand of action, with certain moments etched eternally into the minds of those that got to see him: His 20ft scaffold fall which sent him crashing through the canvas, the literal buckets he bled against soon-to-be partner Menace Mogadora, and the many barbed wire tag team bouts he fought alongside "The Paineal Gland" Gareth Payne.
Moveset;
Standing:
Lots of standard strikes such as Punches, Slaps, Knees to the body, Front Kicks and Clubbing Forearms. In terms of actual manoeuvres he usually sticks to Vertical and Back Suplexes, various DDTs, Neckbreakers and Backbreakers, and he's known for a dramatic, Leaping Headbutt which is either convincing or stiff as Hell, warranting a pop from the crowd every time.
From the Ground:
Without Technical prowess, Free often suffers on the ground. His only defenses are to Kick a standing opponent away or Punch at them if they move in to Mount or attempt a Submission. From this position he has been known to lock in a sudden Triangle Choke, one of the only Submissions in his arsenal, and this has picked up wins in particular against wrestlers lower down the card than him. It's worth noting that since Technicians are generally smaller than him, Ethan can usually power his way out of this predicament.
Grounded Opponent:
Being quite a big man, Free is in his element atop a dazed opponent, free to maul them as he pleases. The sight of Ethan Free mounting a wrestler is, in Japan and US hardcore promotions, synonymous with the gushing of blood. Against tougher opponents he's known to knuckle 'em until they're busted open the hard way, no razors needed. This is a moment best saved for high-level matches, 1. so as not to overuse it, and 2. because concussions are serious business.
Other favourites of Free's to afflict on the floored are rapid fire Stomps, Falling Headbutts (sometimes from the top rope), Deadlift German/Belly to Belly Suplexes and a good ol' Boston Crab.
From the Corner:
Cornering the volatile big man can be as dangerous as him cornering you, as he uses the Buckle to his rear as a pedestal, leaping forth with vicious Punches, Forearms or his dangerous trademark Headbutt. Free is quick to switch roles from this predicament, attempting to daze opponents before swinging them into the corner for further mauling. When opponents charge at him, he'll spin out of the way to let them crash into the corner before hitting a Big Standing Boot to disorientate them. This is most successful on foes slower than him, giving his plodding frame time to dodge.
Cornered Opponent:
Much like when he has an opponent at his mercy on the floor, Ethan Free loves to take care of smaller, cornered workers. He has options from here: sometimes he'll just Club and Punch them repeatedly until they melt to the canvas, before continuing the onslaught with Stomps and Low Knees. Other times he'll hit a few Rear Elbows before pacing away to charge with a Big Boot. In title matches or other big occasions, he'll set the unlucky sod up top and bring them crashing down with a Vertical or Back Superplex - bonus points when it's performed onto Chairs or through a Table.
Running:
Not one for athletic dashes across the ring, when Free hits the ropes they bend beneath his savage will, but that velocity pales in comparison to the force with which he lands his Running Lariat, Big Boot, Twist Around Sleeper or humble Shoulder Block.
Rebounding Opponent:
When faced with the incoming dart of an opponent, The Hardcore Marauder is known to stop them in their tracks with a Standing Boot, Lariat, sudden Twist Around Sleeper, Catch Belly to Belly or high impact Headbutt.
Trademark moves:
The offense most closely associated with Ethan Free is that from which his "Icon of Insanity" moniker is derived. Savagely physical brawling which uses explosive intensity and either stiffness or realism (depending on the physicality of his opponent's work; in Japan he opts for stiffness) to get across his dominance. Whenever possible he loves to incorporate plenty of weapons and has garnered a devoted cult following for the creative brutality of how he uses them.
Were his wrestling style to be broken down to a few key moves, they would be his Headbutt, Big Boot, Sleeper Hold, Inverted DDT and of course, The Sanity Crack.
Finisher and description;
The Sleeper Hold and Triangle Choke have both won matches in the past, being two of the only three submissions that Ethan regularly employs. However his favoured finishing techniques are either especially painful and credible hardcore spots, ones that only the very toughest of opponents could kick out of and which are usually unique to their respective matches, never to be repeated. The other, primary finisher is his Sanity Crack. It's a cringe-inducing Full Nelson Suplex, with gravity and the Marauder's sheer strength driving the opponent's back upon his knee, modifying it into another Backbreaker variation.
Manager;
Ethan Free is blessed in terms of his entertainment abilities. He has a good menacing aura but also no need for a mouth piece, being a charismatic figure in his own right, capable of carrying his own promos. If anything, he has been known to manage raw rookies from time to time, inevitably leading to a turn by one of them. This culminates in a blow off where the veteran Marauder takes the win but the youngster is pegged as a future prospect from that moment on.
