PWInsider.com is reporting that Seth Lerch is unhappy with the lackluster reaction to Sidney J Warwick’s inclusion in the ONE main event. The news broke Sunday that Seth has taken it upon himself to “Stack the deck”, with as many returning stars as possible as he attempts to bolster the card. Lerch (CEO and majority stakeholder within Wrestling Championship Federation PLC) will reportedly pay a “ significant six figure sum” up front for Dune’s return after heated negotiations between the Federation’s board and the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) who now represent Dune, finally heralded results last Monday night. The deal was brokered via a twenty four hour skype conference call, described by one insider as akin to a “bloodbath”. Dune so far has refused to comment as he prepares to face another returning adversary, Wade Moor, at the event.
Meanwhile, whispers continue to surface about the deal. Apparently CAA pushed hard for a reduced schedule for Dune, with a guaranteed cut of the gate included as an incentive. Seth held out, as such deals are unheard of within pro wrestling. But with Dune’s inclusion in “Untitled Avengers 4” as a “Major recurring role”, a role hinted by John Gable online via his twitter account to be “significant and universe altering” now a lock, it would seem that Dune is on course to become a heavy hitter in Hollywood, at a time when “tinsel town” desperately needs new stars to fill their post scandal void.
Along with Dune and Moor, Jared Holmes and Joey Flash will also mark their in ring returns at the troubled WCF event. However, it’s the main event itself that is garnering the most controversy. Dave Meltzer, who foundered the Wrestling Observer newsletter thirty seven years ago, and has become the preeminent journalist of the sport, commented last week to fellow wrestling journalist, Bryan Alvarez that, “The Sidney J. Warwick experiment has become a recurring joke backstage in Pennsylvania. Everyone sees it as this slow motion car wreck that Seth is struggling to veer back on course. A lot of those guys in creative know now they’re on the chopping block for this. They pitched to Seth a zeitgeist antagonist that would rival the athletic prowess and fan favorite work rate of Rabid. What the WCF galaxy got was a woefully miscast crybaby, dressed in a bowtie and suspenders, who proceeded to derail everything. I’m afraid to say, it looks like it’s damage limitation from here on out, they may have to reschedule the PPV to just give Seth time to figure out how to hide Sidney’s inadequacies, which are, quite frankly...considerable”
Those inadequacies include a now infamous workrate that nearly ruined one of the best WAR PPV’s in years, and bizarre, meandering promo’s, that fail on a fundamental level to sell a cohesive story. As Meltzer points out, “In one corner you have John Rabid. A man who is your quintessential professional. Athletic, sells a story, gets himself over and out from under the shadow of #’beachkrew. He’s the man in WCF these days no doubt, but he needs competition. Someone to push him. Someone who is his equal physically and mentally. Now though, Rabid is saddled with facing an obvious inferior in Sidney, and they’ll have to mask that gulf in talent someone to salvage things.” So far, ideas apparently suggested include a stable that would surround Sidney like a human shield, bodies willing to take insane bumps to distract the audience. There’s also been talk of a manager, with Jonah Worth’s name mentioned as a possibility. Whatever direction they take over the next few weeks, one thing is certain, Rabid will have to show the world that he can carry a dud to greatness. If he can achieve that? His legendary status will be guaranteed.
