We open up to Corey Black sitting in the Myth in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The place is closed, and the house lights are on, and nobody else is there but Black and the cameraman. Black is sitting on the stage area, looking out on the dance floor, surely where the rings will be set up for Thirteen. Corey's legs dangle off the edge of the stage. He is wearing an All That Remains t-shirt and baggy dark colored jeans.
Corey Black: Slam has come and gone, and I finally got pinned. The first time in WCF since April twenty ninth, two thousand seven. And even then, I was attacked by my own partner in a tag match. Almost two years had passed, and it finally happened again. Logan and Brad Kane ... and the brass knuckles got the best of me on Slam. We'll see what happens next week when they face off against each other.
Corey drops off the stage and walks into the dance floor, looking up at the ceiling of the Myth as he does it.
Corey Black: I have one great memory here. Saw 36 Crazyfists, Gojira, All That Remains and In Flames here a few months ago. That's more metal than anyone could possibly handle. Just like a deathmatch. With that concert, my body was beaten to a pulp, and Friday, it will be the same story.
Why here, though? Why at the Myth? Why in Minnesota? To you, I ask, why not? The WCF Arena has been home to many great matches, most including myself. With my shows, I try to venture out. Remember last year in Japan? That was bananas. A change of scenery is always nice, whether it be across an ocean or across a nation ... to my home.
So much blood is going to be spilled here on Friday. Blood of WCF veterans, WCF rookies, and people not even in WCF at all. That's what makes my shows special. I can get the names Gravedigger or Seth Lerch cannot get. Jack of Blades, one of the most prolific men to ever step foot in a WCF ring. I went to Blades, and I said 'hey. You should come have a match at my show.' He told me straight up, that he wanted Skyler Striker. So I went to Striker and said 'hey. You should come have a match at my show.' Skyler told me, straight up, that he was game. Blades set him up, and Striker walked right into it.
From the left, another light source shines through. It's a door opening, and then closing. Into the club walks Nikki Venus. She kind of looks concerned as she walks over to Corey.
Nikki Venus: You've got some trouble in the first round, Corey.
Corey Black: Rick Mad? Giving ME trouble? What is this, two thousand three?
Nikki Venus: Well no, but he's been talking to some of his old friends. Reliving his past.
Corey Black: I am his past. He was nothing until I came along and decided we'd make for a fantastic team.
Nikki Venus: No, no, no Corey. He's talking to people from WCF, PCW, and ... sigh ... XCW.
Corey Black: XCW?!
Corey throws his hands in the air in disbelief.
Corey Black: I had a friend in XCW. He said it was the most bullshit garbage wrestling ever, and even had a guy in Creeping Death make-up go around and job like no jobber since ... well Rick Mad.
Nikki Venus: I've seen tapes. Back when I ran GWC, I was scouting people, and stumbled upon an old XCW show featuring this guy Gonz0 and a robot called Death Weed.
Corey Black: I ... Jesus Christ. Can't be TOO worried, if he's talking to old, washed up losers.
Nikki Venus: It gets better.
Corey Black: This should be good.
Nikki Venus: Kevin Hardaway has a blog on his site about how he's only doing this for a paycheck.
Corey stares at Nikki with a blank look on his face.
Nikki Venus: Yeah.
Corey Black: So, let me get this straight. The guy bashes on WCF for MONTHS, and as soon as GWC goes down, he's here looking to get paid?
Nikki Venus: Makes me sick.
Corey Black: Me too. I guess, no matter what happens in the tournament, I come out a winner. Kevin Hardaway is wrestling on a WCF show. A moral victory is still a victory.
Corey and Nikki take off from the dance floor, and head up a small set of stairs to the front part of the venue. Nikki places her hand on Corey's, and smiles to him.
Nikki Venus: Why did you really do this?
Corey Black: Do what?
Nikki Venus: Decide on a deathmatch tournament, of all things. Especially after going through two tournaments here.
Corey Black: It's in my blood. I was a deathmatch guy way before I was a World Champion guy. I brought the genre back from the dead. WCF had never seen anything like me, and never will. I took a TLC match, already brutal, and added barbed wire ropes to it. I took an Elimination Chamber, put weapons in the pod, and created the most feared match anyone has seen.
Nikki Venus: But you've had to outgrow it, haven't you?
Corey Black: I thought so. At the moment, I'm the best wrestler WCF has to offer, World Title or not. With the belt coming home in a few weeks, I thought it would be best to prove myself as the best hardcore wrestler, once again.
Nikki Venus: Johnny Craven has something to say about that.
Corey Black: Johnny who?
Nikki Venus: Craven.
Corey Black: Never heard of him.
Nikki punches Corey's arm all jokingly, and laughs at him. Corey smiles.
Nikki Venus: COREY! You fought Craven and Danny Vice at the last TWO WCF pay-per-views before it closed down, both for the Hardcore Title!
Corey puts his hand to this chin, stroking his beard.
Corey Black: Danny who?
Nikki drops her head down in shame, also rolling her eyes in the process.
Nikki Venus: So, I take it you're looking over him?
Corey Black: Why wouldn't I? I don't even know if I'm going to fight Johnny Vice.
Nikki Venus: JOHNNY CRAVEN!
Corey Black: Yeah, yeah, whatever. Let's look at it this way. I'm going to break some lighttubes, staple some guy, and then go on to compete in the first ever Thirteen Deathmatch, effectively ensuring I won't have to defend the World Title next month.
Nikki Venus: You seem confident.
Corey Black: Of course I do. I'm a calculating guy. Win the deathmatch tournament, get a title shot next month. But, I already have a title shot on the twenty second. Win that as well, and I'm set for a while. Can't defend the title against myself, now can I?
Nikki Venus: No, I guess not. I can't believe you are cunning enough to think of a plan like that.
Corey Black: And you think that's all I have? Ha.
Corey pulls Nikki out the door of the Myth, and into the cool Minnesota day. They're walking toward Corey's car, as the scene fades out.
