Chances, Part 1
Forgiveness, Chapter 1
Forgiveness, Chapter 1
"I HATE YOU!"
There are two figures in a car driving down a road. It's dark, the only light coming from a street lamp every now and then, and the car's own headlights.
"Oh come on, you don't mean that, God damn it."
The person in the passenger seat is Rick Mad. He's wearing street clothes; a pair of black jeans and a brown t-shirt. He sighs and leans back in the seat. The driver, a woman whom we've never seen before, has short black hair. She's unnaturally skinny and from what we can tell of the light reflecting on to her, quite pale.
Woman: No, Rick, I really DO mean it. I got with you thinking you were an EX wrestler... I didn't expect to be doing this, driving from city to city. I thought we'd be starting a family soon.
Rick Mad: I never ever said I was done wrestling and you know that. Its in my blood, its not something I can just give up...
Woman: Oh, but I am?!
Rick Mad: No! No. Ugh. I didn't say that. I don't want to leave you or anything and I don't want you to leave me, but this really is something I have to do, Lisa.
Lisa: No, you don't HAVE to do anything, Rick. Weren't you happy with me and a normal life?
Rick Mad: Lisa I couldn't find a decent job, the only work I'd been doing was giving shoot interviews and autograph signings and crap like that. So no, I wasn't happy with the "normal" life.
Lisa: Well you know what? You probably should start thinking about getting used to it. You're almost forty and you don't even have any kids!
Rick Mad: That I know of, anyway..
Lisa: What was that?!
Rick Mad: Sigh. Nothing, I...
The car is entering a city now. There are several buildings, though it looks like a pretty shady part of town. Hooded men walk the sidewalks, looking up to no good, keeping their heads down.
Rick Mad: Just drop me off here. We're almost there anyway, I'll just walk the rest of the way. I don't need to deal with this, Lisa. Not before XIII.
Lisa slams the breaks.
Lisa: FINE. Get out, you bastard. And don't think you'll see me at the hotel room either. We're through.
Rick Mad: Know what? Fine by me.
Lisa: And don't go getting any whores out here either, you piece of shit.
Rick gets out of the car, which speeds off into the distance. Rick begins walking...
Rick Mad: Hey.. that gives me an idea.

Forgiveness, Chapter 2
Forgiveness, Chapter 2
It is unusually sunny out for early February. The sun is shining bright and its more like Spring than Winter, despite the piles of snow along the road. We're what appears to be a middle class development; several houses line the roads, each one looking very similar to all the others. A cab pulls up to one of them, and out steps Rick Mad, wearing the same clothing he'd been wearing earlier. He pays the cab driver, who speeds off. Rick pulls a piece of paper out of the pocket, reads the address and checks the mailbox to make sure it's the right one, and proceeds to the door.
Rick Mad: I can't believe I'm doing this. It's been years...
The house is relatively nondescript. Light blue, garage, two stories, nothing too special. White picket fence. Rick knocks on the door.
Rick Mad: Don't be nervous don't be nervous don't be nervous..
The door opens, and standing in the doorway...
Rick Mad: Hey, Danita.
It is Danita, Rick Mad's ex wife. They met during Rick's time at a wrestling promotion known as PCW, which is probably where Rick met the most success in his career. A tag Champion and eventually a World Champion and one of the most popular superstars in the company. He created a "Mad World Order," parody of the nWo, and "The Four Whoresmen," parody of the Four Horsemen. Danita had been known for her promiscuity, though you wouldn't know that by looking at her now. Her medium length red hair hung a bit below her shoulders and she was wearing bluejeans and a light blue shirt. She looks just like a normal, every day woman, and you'd never guess she'd been married to a former wrestling champion.
Danita: ...Rick?
Rick Mad: I... I don't know what I'm doing. I just got the urge to talk to you, and I was in town, and..
Danita: Rick, we're adults. Stop stammering like a teenage boy. Just come in.
Rick Mad: Hah, yeah.. okay, thanks.
Rick follows Danita into the house. The inside of the house is as nondescript as the outside; as Rick enters, a stairway leads up to the second level. There are a few pictures on the walls. To the left is the kitchen, and to the right is the living room, which is where Danita leads him. She sits down on a brown leather couch and motions for him to join her, which he does.
Danita: So what brings you here?
Rick Mad: Well, I don't know if you're still following wrestling and everything but I'm back in WCF. Corey Black's holding this King of the Deathmatch tournament and I'm in town here for training, and I figured... I don't know. I got in a fight with my girlfriend Lisa and we broke up and.. I just wanted to see you.
Danita: Ah, oh. I'm sorry.
Rick Mad: No, don't be. I don't think we were right for each other... We fought a lot once I started wrestling again and she started getting kind of bitchy all the time and.. well you know how women are. No offense.
Danita: Haha, I do! So none taken. Tell me about this King of the Deathmatch thing though, I know you like talking about your wrestling. Are you and Corey still friends?
Rick Mad: Heh, yeahh, no. Not so much. I kind of cost him the World Title a few weeks ago and aligned myself with his arch enemy and stuff.
Danita: I swear! You boys in your wrestling are more dramatic and catty than any woman I know.
Rick Mad: You're probably right. Regardless, I decided to enter his King of the Deathmatch tournament. You remember when I won the King of the Deathmatch trophy in XCW?
Danita: Hm? No, actually.
Rick Mad: Yeah me neither, I realized! I thought about it and I was like... I KNOW I won the damn thing, but I don't remember anything about it. That's when I decided to enter this tournament. The XCW King of the Deathmatch victory elevated me to main event status, and I want that elevation again. Winning this tournament could do that for me and I need to do it. I need to prove to myself I still can... you know, comebacks don't even feel special for me anymore. It's sad. I used to take breaks from wrestling, come back, and be really excited about it and everything but now... I've come back so many times its not even special anymore. And each time, I think, the fans are a little bit quieter, they're a little less excited too. Because they think I'm just going to disappear again, be irrelevant again like I've always been the last few years. So I'm going to become the King of the Deathmatch.
Danita: When was the last time you even FOUGHT in a Death Match, Rick?
Rick Mad: A long, loonggg time ago. And I know, I'm not a guy that is known for being hardcore. I'm a technical guy, a submission guy, a "wrestler's wrestler" but I know I can do it. I HAVE done it before and I know I can do it again.
Danita places her hand on Rick's.
Danita: I can hear something in your voice I don't think I've heard in.. I don't remember how long. I think you can too, Rick. I really do.
Rick Mad: But... argh, geez. Enough about me. How have you been? You still dating.. that guy?
Danita: There have been plenty of "that guy"s since we last talked, Rick, but no. I'm single right now, actually.
Rick Mad: Oh.. oh. Well that sucks.
Danita: Nah, it works for me. I have a job at a restaurant and I make good money, plus I have a pretty decent amount saved up, so you know. I go out with the girls on the weekends and we have good times.
Rick Mad: Well.. sigh, look. Alright, I'll just cut to the chase... Haha, sorry, I'm doing the "nervous teenager" thing again. But I was wondering if-
Danita: No. Don't ask.
Danita seems to have regret in her eyes as she answers Rick's unasked question. Rick stops in his tracks.
Danita: I'm sorry. I just didn't want the conversation to go this way, I can't do this again. I'm happy, Rick, and I just.. I don't want ...
Rick Mad: No no no, it's okay, I'm sorry. I probably shouldn't have come here, I''m ... haha I'm such an idiot, I'm so sorry Danita, I.. yeah I should probably go.
Danita: No! No, you don't understand, Rick, I-
But it's too late. Rick is on his feet before he even finishes his sentence and he's headed to the door. Danita realizes it would be pointless to stop him and sits back on the couch, watching him go. Rick pauses before he leaves and turns around to face her.
Rick Mad: I'm sorry, I shouldn't leave like that. I DO have to go though, and coming here really was probably a mistake. But I do have to go... I have a deathmatch coming up..
Rick opens the door and steps out.
Rick Mad: And I have training to do.

Forgiveness, Chapter 3
Rick arrives at his hotel room. It appears as if he has the weight of the world on his shoulders; he's run down and tired. He puts the key in the lock and is surprised to noticed that it is already unlocked. He opens the door, and is greeted with Lisa sitting on the bed. She immediately gets up and wraps her arms around him, though he doesn't immediately return her hug. After a few seconds he puts his arms around her a bit, and soon she pulls away, ready to speak.
Lisa: Rick... I'm sorry. That whole fight.. I don't know what I was thinking. I don't want us to be over, I love you.
Rick Mad: Lisa, you have to leave.
Lisa: What? You're still mad? I thought you'd be calmed down by now.
Rick Mad: I'm plenty calm, but I don't want to be with you anymore. We're over. I realized.. I don't think I love you anymore, Lisa, and I can't keep doing this. I need to focus on becoming the King of the Deathmatch, anyway. I'm tired of distractions.
Lisa goes from apologetic to enraged in .5 seconds.
Lisa: ..WHAT? YOU'RE throwing ME out? But-
Rick pulls out his pocket, opens up his wallet and pulls out a few bills. At least two of them are hundreds. He hands them to Lisa, who quickly swipes them from him.
Rick Mad: Here's some money. Just go.
Lisa glares at him.
Lisa: Fine, Rick. Fine. Though I hope you know, you're never going to get the chance at someone like me again.
She walks towards the door, opens it, and begins to walk out..
Lisa: I hate you, Rick.
The door closes as Lisa leaves, leaving Rick Mad alone once more.
