Imagine, from the beginning of a wrestler’s career, gathering up all the pain that they have suffered and putting it into one dose. Broken limbs, bruises, gashes. Scars that they have accumulated. Chair shots to the head, broken tables that they have fallen through, canvas prints from when they miss a high-flying manoeuvre. Every single move that they have ever received. Now imagine rolling it all into one giant ball of pain and inflicting it on that wrestler. One would only be able to assume that they would die from the pain. Which really makes you wonder why they persevere. Why would someone put themselves through all that pain, week after week, just for a little shiny piece of gold? Why would someone willingly walk into a burning building? Why would someone walk through the fire and flames?
There is no calm, peaceful introduction to today’s scene. Skyler Striker, dressed in protective fireman’s gear, is rushing through a burning building. He smashes through a collapsed door and finds, unconscious in the next room, a small girl, about eight years old, who has passed out due to the smoke. He grabs her and without hesitating runs back the way he has come to a second story window. The fire crew below see Skyler and give him the okay to jump. Skyler takes a quick breath and jumps down to the mat below. He lands safely and the crew give a sigh of relief. Skyler hands the child in his arms to the ambulance officers who put the girl on a stretcher and roll her into the ambulance, Skyler watching intently as they do. The ambulance drives away and Skyler turns back to the fire crew who are putting every hose they have into putting the building out. The building looks to be a two-story house, the city surrounding it. Skyler sits down as the fire officers spend the next half-hour putting the fire out. Eventually the last flame is quenched and the fire crew give the volunteers the okay to leave. Skyler, one of the volunteers, leaves along with a friend from the crew, James Keller.
JK: That was really brave, rescuing that girl, Skyler. You deserve a medal or something.
Skyler shakes his head, still thinking of the girl in hospital and looking as if he knows something that the fire crew do not.
SS: She… Do you think she’ll be okay?
JK: She’ll be fine, Skyler. The medics will take good care of her. Her mother will be infinitely grateful to you.
SS: James… her mother…
JK: What?
Skyler hesitates at this point.
JK: What about her mother, Skyler?
SS: She was already dead.
Neither James or Skyler speak at this point in time. Skyler walks in silence, his clothes still smelling of smoke. Luckily Skyler’s maroon trousers are still in his closet at home and Skyler is wearing a pair of white jeans, which now seem to have a fair few black patches on them thanks to the fire. James sees it fit to talk first.
JK: Skyler, there was nothing you could have done. You did more than you had to in any case, and none of us heard any screams. You saved the girl’s life. You walked through the fire and flames to get to her, Skyler, and that shows courage.
SS: But I could have done MORE! If I’d gone in earlier, I could have-
James cuts Skyler off with force.
JK: ENOUGH! Skyler, you did a great thing today. Appreciate what you have done and if you’re so concerned, go out tomorrow and see the girl in hospital.
SS: But-
JK: Skyler, I’m not going to continue arguing with you. You did something great today. Now go home to your daughter and enjoy your dinner. Oh, and have a shower, you don’t want to smell like smoke all day and night.
SS: Thanks, James.
The street splits in two at this point and Skyler takes the left, halting a passing bus and jumping onboard. He stays in silence the entire trip, and pays the driver his fare as he hops off fifteen minutes later at a cul-de-sac we know all too well – the one that houses the two members of the Striker family. Skyler pulls his keys out and unlocks the door, and Jade, who hears the keys clinking, is there to meet her father straight away.
JS: How did it go, father?
SS: The building was mostly burnt, but we put it out. I had to pull a little girl from the second floor, but her mother…
JS: She was already gone, wasn’t she, father?
Skyler looks at his daughter, the master of reading into people. Skyler nods, and Jade, knowing it is best not to say anything else, hugs her father tightly. The two remain still for a few moments before Jade lets go and brings her father to his room.
JS: Have a shower, dad. Then come back down, I’ll make dinner tonight.
SS: Thanks, Jade.
Skyler takes his shower in silence as well, and when he finally returns back downstairs in his maroon pants and a black shirt, Jade is waiting at the table, leaning on two boxes of pizza with a smile in her face. Skyler grins weakly at his daughter’s cheekiness and sits down to eat with her.
SS: I was talking to James on the way back to the bus stop, he suggested going down to the hospital tomorrow to see the girl. Would you like to come with?
JS: I’d love to, dad. Eat some pizza, you need energy.
SS: Shouldn’t I be on my regular diet? I have my first World Title defense this week.
JS: Yes, you should be, father, but there are always exceptions to the rule. You can’t let the stress of being a World Champion affect who you are personally. You need to enjoy life.
SS: Biohazard… it’s going to be an interesting match, to say the least.
JS: Father, tonight you ran through fire and flames to get to that little girl. If you can do that, you can beat an ooze-spitting genetic freak like Biohazard. Get back into your regular training regime tomorrow and you’ll be fine. Now eat.
The two start eating their pizza as the scene fades out.
