Serujah is sitting at her desk reading ‘The Science in Everyday Things.’ Granted, the book itself was published in 1958, and the everyday things really don’t exist anymore or have changed so much as to make much of the book obsolete. Still, some things still apply like ‘What animals never drink water?’ and ‘What happens to gas in a gas mask?’ Serujah just finished reading up on ‘How is liquid air made?’ and closed the book, standing to discover her feet getting wet.
She looked around, nearly an inch of water standing on the floor. She knew time was running out, but had hoped things wouldn’t get worse. It was getting worse. She Rushed to the window to discover her worst thoughts come true. The banks of the Wapsipinicon River had disappeared, and the flowing river had already risen enough to make the first floor of the Hammon Family Mansion disappear under the surface.
The lights flickered, brightened, then went out entirely. She reached out for her smartphone, and just hit dial on the first number she saw. It rang once .. twice .. then a third time before a husky baritone voice answered on the other end, “What do you want?”
She looked at the phone to see who she had dialed, Tommy, turned on the external speaker and began talking frantically.
“The river is flooded, there’s water in my bedroom, I need a way out right AAAGH!!”
She jumped up onto the bed, frantic in her search of her bedroom floor. The voice on the other end suddenly seemed concerned, “Flooded? You’re still there? They forecast flooding for the last week. You shoulda been on high ground days ago! .. Why did you scream?”
“Why did I .. Why did I scream? I screamed because there’s a catfish swimming in my bedroom!”
“Don’t you have a second story room?”
“I’m IN my second story room!”
“Shit. On my way.”
The line goes dead.
“Tommy? Tommy!”
The catfish swims closer to her bed and she panics, throwing her smartphone at the fish to keep it at bay, “Go Away!”
She realises what she did and cringes. Now she has only Tommy to help, IF he shows up, and no way to call for anyone else.
“Oh crap.”
