Psychopomp, Kevin Bishop, and 1 more like this

The camera is still black, but the sound of footsteps and heavy breathing can be heard. The noise fades just as quickly as it arrives, hinting at a person running by the camera. Seconds later, many more footsteps are heard. However, it's accompanied by angry shouting this time. This is where the camera brightens up enough for things to be visible. A mob of ravenous humanoids are the first things sighted. In appearance, they look like Sabrewulf from Killer Instinct except without the fur. As they are running down a deserted road in the middle of nowhere, the starry night sky illuminates them with the assistance of the full moon. There seems to be a couple dozen of them in total, maybe thirty at the most. About 50 yards separated the malicious pack from the single target that they are chasing. That target is CJ Phoenix. His legs are propelling him forward like Usain Bolt on the 100 meter dash. A combination of fear and focus has his adrenaline and speed skyrocketing. It appears that he's been running for a long time as he shows signs of fatigue. Also, he is carrying a black Luma in his left arm like a football. There is a communicator earpiece in his ear, and he begins speaking through it.
Phoenix: I think I...see the village.
Kaiyah's voice comes through the communicator.
Kaiyah: You're about 400 yards out. You sure this will work?
Phoenix: It has to...
The camera zooms out to show CJ and the horde of monsters chasing him as the screen fades to black.
The scene opens up in the closing moments of the main event of Slam. CJ Phoenix is recovering from the Memphis Giant Slam that he had received moments earlier. He gets up to his feet in time to see Captain WCF keeping Kevin Bishop from being able to tag out, which would end up costing Cap the match just seconds later. Phoenix was pretty happy until the bell rang. His facial expression turned into confusion with a hint of disgust as he noticed that Bishop didn't let go of his submission hold after winning the match. As Bates kicked Kevin off of Captain WCF, CJ decided to not add any fuel to this potential as he felt this wasn't the time or place to do so. Instead, he began making his way up the ramp with The Plague and Crazy J, deferring the opportunity at a potential post match sneak attack. As he makes his way to the locker room, he's holding his stomach in pain. Just as he is able to sit down on a bench in the locker room, he looks at the TV monitor and sees Corey Black attacking Thomas Uriel Bates. Phoenix knew that it was not his place to get involved, but a part of him just couldn't take watching the World Champ get brutalized mere minutes after the grueling match he just had. Considering his condition after the aforementioned match, Phoenix knew that he would likely meet the same fate as Bates if he tried to break things up. Besides, Tommy's a tough guy. All CJ could do was watch and take mental notes as he wondered what this would mean for WAR.
After the show ended, CJ made his way back to the Windcreek Casino&Hotel. He walks through the entrance and bypasses the casino intentionally on his way to his room. Kaiyah was not in the room when he entered, so he immediately goes to take a shower. Ironically, as he's stepping out of the bathroom and heading to the bed, she's walking in the door after working out.
Phoenix: So you telling me that after wrestling a match and slow rolling my way back here, I still beat you here? Sounds like somebody needs to work on their 40 time. Hahahah-owww it hurts to laugh.
Kaiyah: Hardy har har. Doesn't hurt me to laugh.
Phoenix: Whatevs. You didn't get hit with a Memphis Giant Slam.
Kaiyah: True. Speaking of Bates, I saw that ambush from Corey Black. Is Bates okay?
Phoenix: Not in the slightest. He got fucked up royally! I'm gonna go visit him tomorrow. I wouldn't put it past him to be out way quicker than expected, but that was painful just watching it happen. It wasn't the only thing that caught my attention, though.
Kaiyah: I'm listening.
Phoenix: Did you see the way that Kevin Bishop kept his hold locked in after the match was over?
Kaiyah: Yeah, that was a little unnecessary.
Phoenix: I'd say more like uncalled for.
Kaiyah: What's the difference?
Phoenix: He didn't need to keep his move in that long because the match was over. However, he needed something like that to send a message. That was his way of saying that he rules The Brotherhood with an iron fist and he's willing to cross a few lines and make a few sacrifices along the way. Kevin wants competition at all costs, but I'm not sure he notices that one of the costs may be the very competition that he seeks. I'll explain it more when you get out the shower.
Kaiyah: Alright.
She goes into the bathroom as he takes out his laptop. He goes to WCF.com and checks out the articles. While he hears the sound of the shower water running in the background, he looks at the highlights of the show. Eventually, he comes across the segment with Psychopomp joining The Brotherhood. He laughs to himself.
Phoenix: Well played, Kevin. Well played.
Kaiyah comes out of the bathroom and lays in the bed next to Phoenix. She looks at his laptop.
Kaiyah: Pomp's in the hood, eh?
Phoenix: It appears so. It's actually a very smart move on Kev's part.
Kaiyah: I'm guessing it's because of Pomp being an up and comer with a lot of potential.
Phoenix: Absolutely, but that's not the only thing. Psychopomp, believe it or not, has quite a bit of influence on the WCF Galaxy. He's a very likable guy that has "innocent kid with heart" written all over him. I saw his potential when he was preparing to face Kevin Bishop. Pomp pulled out all the stops and did everything he could to try to campaign his way to victory. Though he didn't win, he put up an incredible fight both inside and outside of the ring. That gave him even more respect from the roster and the fans.
Kaiyah: So if Kevin Bishop were to have Psychopomp use that influence to help him out, it would spread The Brotherhood that much further. Plus, The Plague would have access to a broader range of people to reel in.
Phoenix: And with a broader range of people to draw in, he could have those people reach out to their people and so on and so forth.
Kaiyah: Looks like The Plague is finally spreading.
A smirk runs across the Alpha Champ's face.
Phoenix: Good. Now we can really have fun.
Kaiyah: You must be talking about that race you two are having.
Phoenix: Of course. We're not going to always cross paths in the ring. Our names won't be be mentioned in the same in ring contest every week. That's obvious, which is why I try to make the most out of each opportunity. One of us will win that race, and I'm making sure that it's me.
The camera pans to the window as the two continue talking about various things.
The camera shows a shot of the Hotel/Casino as CJ Phoenix can be heard yelling from inside of it.
Phoenix: SON OF A MOTHER THAT GAVE BIRTH TO A BOY!
Kaiyah nearly jumps out of the bed as she is torn from her slumber.
Kaiyah: What's wrong!?
Phoenix: That maniac Seth booked Bates in a match!
Kaiyah: Isn't he still in the hospital?
Phoenix: As far as I know. On top of that, he's teaming with me against Kevin Bishop and Psychopomp!
Kaiyah: That's ridiculous. At least he has you on his side.
Phoenix: True. That might be why he's in the match. With me on his side, he can keep the rust off while having someone to rely on that can carry the load in the match.
Kaiyah: What if he isn't able to compete Sunday?
Phoenix: Then I'll just have to face Kev and Pomp in a handicap match. It wouldn't be the best of scenarios, but it wouldn't hurt to be prepared for it, just in case.
Kaiyah: True. Too bad you won't have anyone to tag out to if that does end up being the case.
Phoenix: If it is the case, then it just means that I was meant to face them both myself. I'll talk to Bates about it when I visit him. You coming?
Kaiyah: Sure. Why not.
The two get dressed and make their way to the hospital. Phoenix is armed with his Alpha Title as they enter the room that Thomas Uriel Bates is in. He appears to either be asleep or just flat out not conscious. Phoenix looks at him.
Phoenix: Thomas. Thomas Bates. World Champ. You there, mate? We got some stuff to talk about. Exist if you can hear me.
Kaiyah gives him the "did you really just say that?" look as he takes a few seconds to look at the heart monitor.
Phoenix: Alright, good. You can hear me.
CJ takes a seat and places his title on his shoulder as Kaiyah sits on his lap.
Phoenix: We have a match this week against Kevin Bishop and Psychopomp. Oh, by the way, word on the street is Pomp is in the Hood now.
Phoenix nods like he's listening to Bates who's obviously not saying anything.
Phoenix: Yeah. I was speechless when I found out too. We gotta start game planning. If you can't make it to the ring this week, then I'll step up and fight for the both of us. If you do tough it out and come charging down that ramp when your music hits, I'll do my best to make sure that the match pace is to your advantage. Honestly, whether you're there or not, I'm most likely gonna be the target of The Brotherhood in this one. That's fine with me. Pomp will most likely be taking orders from Kevin, and Kevin will probably put the most effort into attacking me in order to save face and try to say he took the noble route. I know you're a tough guy, Thomas. It'll only be a matter of time before you're back on your feet and storming into War for your title defense.
He looks at the Alpha Title.
Phoenix: Actually, speaking of that World Title defense, that's something I wanted to discuss with you as well. Do you remember how we said that we were looking forward to facing each other for the belt that you're holding?
CJ looks at Thomas.
Phoenix: Your silence speaks volumes, Tommy. Great to see that you're still a reliable listener. You know, seeing you wired up like a rich kid's television hooked up to all the game systems is a reality check of what the life of a World Champion is like. It's a reminder that when you hold a title, you never know how far someone will go to take it from you. I could be in the same position you're in right now. There are plenty of guys on the roster right now that are hungry for my title. You didn't deserve what happened to you, and I know that you'll come back with a vengeance. I'm counting on it. I want you to hold on to that title of yours until I face you for it at One. I still have 77 more days until I can trade this Alpha Title of mine for a shot at the World Title, and I intend to make the most out of every one of those days. Ever since I won this title, I've been battle testing myself. Learning from my mistakes and taking mental notes about everyone on the roster. I'm making sure that when One rolls around, I'll be competing in the biggest match of my life. This week, you get a pass because of what happened to you. Rest up, Champ. Because if you're the one I'm facing for the title, I want to face the Mountain of the WCF at full strength. Mountain vs Workhorse. See you Sunday, hombre.
Phoenix and Kaiyah get up and exit their room. As the are making their way out of the hospital, CJ notices a mother fighting off tears as she tries to comfort her crying son. He stops and decides to walk up to them. As he and Kaiyah approach the two, the woman's eyes widen. She nudges her son and points at CJ. The kid looks up and a smile barely manages to break out through the sorrow and tears.
Kid: Y-are you...CJ Phoenix?
CJ smiles peacefully.
Phoenix: Yes. Yes I am. Why so glum, chum?
Kid: Things aren't going too well for me right now. My auntie's in the hospital and I have an appointment with a therapist tomorrow because people at school have been making me depressed.
Phoenix takes a seat next to the boy, who appears to be around 13 years old.
Phoenix: Depressed? How so?
Kaiyah notices tears running down the mother's face. She walks up to her.
Kaiyah: You look distraught, like something's weighing heavily on you. You want to step outside and talk about it?
The woman stands up.
Woman: Thanks. I'd like that.
She looks at her son.
Woman: I'm going to step outside for a minute. Be good okay, Jeremy?
Jeremy: Okay, mama.
The two ladies walk off.
Phoenix: So what about school is making you so depressed?
Jeremy: Everyone keeps picking on me and calling me weird because I don't act like them. I've tried talking to my teachers about it, but they don't really do much about it.
Phoenix: Don't worry about what people that aren't Jeremy say about Jeremy. Truth is, the only people that try to bring you down are the ones already below you. If you're weird, then make being weird cool. That's what I do. Believe it or not, I was picked on a lot when I was your age.
Jeremy: What did you do about it?
Phoenix: Violent things that got me suspended. I can't say I'm proud of what I did because I got really lucky to be able to dodge having to pay all of those hospital bills, but I also can't say I wasn't impressed.
Jeremy: So what do I do?
Phoenix: You don't let those nimrods get to you. They're insecure, so they want you to feel just as miserable as they do. Show them that it doesn't bother you by ignoring them. If that doesn't one, kick someone in the nads and then stomp on their temple. That'll send a message.
Jeremy laughs.
Jeremy: I thought you were a good guy.
Phoenix shakes his head while smiling.
Phoenix: Only on rare occasions. For the most part, I'm either a good guy doing bad things or a bad guy doing good things. I just claim it as neutrality and move on.
CJ's stomach rumbles.
Phoenix: You know. I could use a snack right now. How about we find a vending machine and load up on stuff?
Jeremy: Okay!
He stands up in excitement as he wipes his face clear of tears.
Phoenix: You wanna hear a story, Jeremy?
Jeremy: Sure!
Phoenix: Alrighty. This one's one of my favorites. It's called "Pompernickel and the Plaguemeister". Long ago, there was a town called "Slamville". In that town was a traveler who loved milkshakes. His name was Flamewake Phoenix. Flamewake loved this town and was seen by many as a leader and an innovator. This earned him the nickname "Alpha". One day, Flamewake was heading back to Slamville after a trip to the mountains. However, when he got there, he saw people panicking. This confused him until he heard one of the citizens shout out "The Plague! The Plague!" in the distance before being suddenly silenced. When the person finally entered Flamewake's line of vision, he appeared to be in a trance. "Brotherhood..." was now the only word that the poor soul could muster. It was then that Phoenix knew what the source of the chaos was.
Jeremy: The Plaguemeister?
Phoenix: Now you're catching on. For weeks, the Plaguemeister had roamed the village, declaring that it was only a matter of time before Slamville would be run by The Brotherhood. Despite his obvious cult-like world domination intentions, Meister wasn't that bad of a guy. He just wanted to complete his objective. Sadly, that objective involves harvesting the minds of the residents of Slamville. Flamewake wasn't having any of this, however. So he sought out the Plaguemeister. When he found him, he noticed that he was accompanied by Pompernickel. Now Pompie was a bit of a psycho at times, but he was quite influential. Plaguemeister noticed this and used Pompernickel's ability of drawing in attention to pump his hypnotic powers out more efficiently. Phoenix knew the deck was stacked against him as he stared down his two adversaries, but just as he was getting ready to charge into battle...
The two reach the vending machine and CJ buys himself and Jeremy a few snacks.
Phoenix: Out comes Mountain Man Bates, Champion of Worlds. Though he was wounded quite a bit from his last adventure, he insisted that he still had enough in the tank to fight alongside Flamewake Phoenix. Now, with the playing field even, the four of them went to battle as the citizens watched from the safety of their homes. Back and forth the two sides raged. The Plaguemeister and Pompernickel pulled out all the stops, but it wasn't quite enough this time as the heroes prevailed. And though they were defeated in this battle, the Plaguemeister swore that The Brotherhood would win the war.
Jeremy: Wow. That's awesome. What happens next?
Phoenix: You'll find out October 2nd.
As the two approach the sofa that they had left from, they see Kaiyah and Jeremy's mother walking back inside. The four meet up one more time.
Phoenix: Well, Kaiyah and I have stuff to do, so our journey must end here for now, Jeremy.
Jeremy: Okay!
Phoenix: You feeling any better?
Jeremy nods his head happily.
Phoenix: Good.
He signs the WCF t-shirt that Jeremy's wearing.
Woman: Thank you so much for cheering my son up.
She looks at Kaiyah.
Woman: And thank you for cheering me up.
Kaiyah: No problem, Rachel. Just remember that you are a great mother, and I'm sure you'll continue to be a great one.
Rachel smiles as she and Jeremy wave while CJ and Kaiyah exit the hospital. Once they are outside, CJ takes out his phone.
Phoenix: I guess this is as good a time as any.
Kaiyah: For what?
Phoenix: For me to have a little chat with my opponents.
He begins recording himself.
Phoenix: Hey folks. I'm CJ Phoenix, and behind me is a hospital. This isn't just any old hospital, however. Inside of this place is WCF World Champion Thomas Uriel Bates. Strangely, he's my tag partner this week against the team of Psychopomp and Kevin Bishop. Well, let's say that the Total Ultimate Badass in there manages to be cleared to compete. What does that mean for me? It means that I have another golden opportunity to take some mental notes and further better myself. Now, with Bates being in the current condition that he's in, this puts my opponents in a very precarious position. Psychopomp, maybe not as much. He's a bit more focused on eating cookies and playing games with IT and Jigsaw and Ronald McDonald at Camp Wawanakwa. Pompie's in the match to learn from his new mentor, Kevin Bishop. That's the guy who's truly at a crossroads, and he doesn't even know it. You claim to be a man of the people and a lover of competition, Kevin. I ask you this, which is more important to you, the competitors or the competition?
He points the camera at the hospital entrance.
Phoenix: I saw what you did Sunday. You sent a message. A message that stated that you are out to succeed at ANY cost. However, if the price is what makes you successful, have you really achieved anything? When you held Captain WCF in your submission hold long after he tapped out, what example did you set for your "people"? What would've happened if poor Cappie ended up in the hospital? What statement have you made then? This week you may be facing a man who is already injured. Granted, even an injured Bates could wreck most of the roster, but what have you to gain from this? Do you be the lion that pursues the wounded gazelle, or do you chase the healthy coyote in order to make yourself feel better?
CJ laughs.
Phoenix: Remember that time I said that I was the cure? Remember how it pissed you off to the point that you had to go to social media to express your disdain? I bet you figured I only said I was the cure as a witty joke. No. I know how a cure works. It takes time to make. Trials and errors must be made. You have to know the virus to beat the virus. Same thing applies to you. I know that someone like you isn't gonna go away after one tough loss or a couple of setbacks. You adapt and mutate into something better, somewhat like a plague. You're a great competitor and you've had quite a bit of success here in the WCF, but you are not perfect. You have your own personal kryptonite just like everyone else, and while you may think that you're ahead of me and that you're putting pressure on me, that's not the case. I've been studying you, Kevin. Studying all the way down to the motions you make before delivering your moves. Like you, I've also adapted. The difference is, I have a bit more patience. I'm willing to take those steps back because like firing and arrow, you have to pull the bow back. Remember that Fatal Four Way match we had the Slam after Revenge? Before that match, I told you that you couldn't beat me on your own, and that the Black Death isn't quite deadly enough to single-handedly take down the Phoenix. You hit me with the Black Death, and I survived it. Like a vaccine to a virus, I took your signature move so that I could gain an immunity to it.
He points the camera back at himself.
Phoenix: You and I have starred in the Main Event every Slam this month, and this week is no different. However, contradictory to the WCF Galaxy's "Fight Forever!" chants, you and I will NOT fight forever. We just happen to be on the same road at the moment. You tossed out some cookies in order to reel Pomp in for his influence. Well played, but there's a crack in your armor. I know it, and you know it. What happens if he loses the match for your team? You may say you forgive him with your words, but in your mind, will you really forgive him? Or will you hold hit against him and shorten his leash? You have a strong competitive drive, but it's only a matter of time before your constant desire for competition drives you into the ground. So go ahead, send the blitz at me. It won't help you. It won't help you because your own intentions have left you with nothing to gain while I have nothing to lose. See you at the finish line, Bishop.
He cuts off the camera and the scene ends.
As the days go by, Phoenix has spent time watching the match between Psychopomp and Kevin Bishop, studying the moves that each man uses in that match. This runs well into the early morning hours as CJ Phoenix has fallen asleep. His dream finds him walking through the Mushroom Kingdom. He finds a tree to sit by. As he leans his back against the mighty oak and looks upward at the beautiful sky, a black Luma falls out of the tree and lands on his head.
Phoenix: Ahh! Dammit!
He rubs his head and looks at the tiny living star. It's uncharacteristically sad and alone, which draws Phoenix to attempt to comfort it.
Phoenix: You alright, little guy?
The Luma looks up slowly and nods. It speaks to CJ telepathically.
Luma: I was hiding from those monsters that have been roaming through here.
Phoenix: What monsters? What do they look like?
Luma points at an approaching horde of beasts with malicious intent as they can be heard fumbling out the words "title shot".
Phoenix: Oh shit. Contenders.
Phoenix hops up to his feet.
Phoenix: Come on, Luma. We gots to gets places! And those places are not here!
Phoenix holds the Luma like a football and jumps through the screen with the horde following very close behind. On the other side of the screen is a long, deserted road that the monstrous beings chase Phoenix down for miles, bringing us back to the beginning scene except for the camera not being blackened when he and the monsters run by. Kaiyah speaks to him through the communicator.
Kaiyah: Please tell me you have a better plan than running.
Phoenix: Of course. Those guys are contenders for my title, but the more they chase me down, the more they realize that only one of them can hold this title. That makes them turn on each other. I just need a place to stealthfully take out the rest.
Kaiyah: There should be a village up ahead.
Phoenix: I think I...see the village.
Kaiyah's voice comes through the communicator.
Kaiyah: You're about 400 yards out. You sure this will work?
Phoenix: It has to...
Phoenix makes it to the village and hides in a dark area as the beasts reach the village.
Luma: I can help you if you want.
Phoenix: Really? Nice. Go right ahead.
Luma spawns a pack of explosive arrows before shape-shifting into a crossbow. Phoenix loads an arrow and hits one of the straggling beasts. The explosion attracts the rest, allowing CJ to take them all out. Luma returns to its normal form.
Phoenix: Nice job, Luma!
He high fives the Luma as the two of them exit the village. However, they stop when they see an army of masked druids. Heading the pack are two people: the black knight that CJ raced up the mountain in a previous dream, and a jester wildly swinging a scythe.
Kaiyah: I don't know where they came from, but there are a hell of a lot of them.
The WCF World Title descends from the sky before vanishing. Phoenix smirks as he looks at the Luma.
Phoenix: I get it now. You ready for one more mission, Luma?
The Luma nods and morphs into a shining black blade. CJ takes the blade and charges at the army. The camera freeze frames right before the carnage begins and everything fades to black.

The Next Morning
Phoenix: SON OF A MOTHER THAT GAVE BIRTH TO A BOY!

September 16th
Lexington, Kentucky
