When I was on the train in Italy, I made a list ranking of all Metallica's albums (just studio albums containing original material). In celebration of Metallica's new album, I thought it'd be fun if people posted where they rank each album. Here's my list:
1. Ride the Lightning 2. Death Magnetic 3. Metallica (The Black Album) 4. Master of Puppets 5. ...And Justice For All 6. Load 7. Kill Em' All 8. ReLoad 9. St. Anger

1. Kill Em All 2. The Black Album 3. Master Of Puppets 4. Ride The Lightning 5. St. Anger 6. ...And Justice for All 7. Death Magnetic 8. Load 9. ReLoad
Honorable mention - S & M... Seriously classical and metal go together so well...
Also I always liked their cover of Stone Cold Crazy. Not as good as Queen, but if the song wasn't already Metal, then that would have been a killer cover. Seriously, who would've thought Queen's original was more Metal than fucking Metallica's version...

1. AJFA 2. Black Album 3. Master of Puppets 4. Ride the Lightning 5. Reload 6. Kill Em All 7. Load 8. Death Magnetic 9. St. Anger
The top 3 is pretty much interchangeable. All in all I think One is one of the best songs of all time, easily the best Metallica song of all time, and the name of my fed's Wrestlemania, so y'know. Blackened is cool too. Black Album was a cultural phenomenon, and Master of Puppets rounds out the top three as being somewhere in between there. Iconic and masterful, but not to the levels of Black Album and AJFA respectively.
I absolutely loved Load and Reload in my late teens. I even loved Mama Said. I'd defend those albums any day of the week.
St. Anger, though... I've got to admit ... not great. Not even good. I love Frantic, but most of that album was such a mis-step...
Death Magnetic makes me wonder if every other Metallica album is just as corny, but overall I viewed it as an attempt at a return to form and enjoyed it for what it was at the time. I'd still listen to it over St. Anger and The Unforgiven III was huge for me.

I went to Europe for five weeks. My wife and I traveled by train throughout Italy. The Italian railway system is awesome and the prices were reasonable. I recommend it to anyone traveling through the country.

It's a wonder how Europe surpassed us so ridiculously with quality of public rail systems when we led the world for so long. Now so as not to... derail... this thread... I have a friend who really loves Metallica and he says Reload and Load are bad, but from what I've heard through Pandora they're good in my opinion. I have the black album, Justice, and Lightning, and they're the only ones I heard all the way though. Did MEtallica really use a trash can in their drums on an album?

The drums were achieved with a tight piccolo with loose snare chain. I've replicated the sound much to my band mates dismay.

I'd still listen to it over St. Anger and The Unforgiven III was huge for me. Master and Justice are interchangeable for me. If I made this list when I was 13, Justice would have been number one, but I've come to think that some of the songs are too long. They pushed the progressive songwriting they mastered on the earlier albums a little too past its limits; but I'll agree with you about One and Blackened. Harvester of Sorrow and The Shortest Straw are sick, too. I fucking love Load. I think it's their most experimental album, both lyrically and musically. The House Jack Built is a prime example. The production on it makes me think I'm in some kind of house haunted by the wails of James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett's lead guitar. The album is pretty dark. The Outlaw Torn sounds like a man dealing with some things about his past that he seriously regrets. ReLoad is not as experimental. It's bland but still has good songs. St. Anger was pretty experimental, too, but in the wrong way. They tried to do nu-metal in their own way, but you can't have eight minute songs of riff after riff with no solos to break them up. There were just too many ideas on that album. I cringe when I hear the bridge on The Unnamed Feeling. Hetfield trying to sound like Jonathon Davis is embarrassing. I will give props to Frantic, Dirty Window, Purify, and All Within My Hands. And we got a pretty good documentary out of the making of the album. Death Magnetic is just a personal favorite. Some albums are just so easy to digest.

This is a review of Ride the Lightning that I posted on Facebook two years ago:
Since Artie Aldarondo [the former lead singer of my band] posted an article about Philip Anselmo dissing Metallica's 1996 album, Load, I am in the mood to share my thoughts about their best album (in my opinion), Ride the Lightning. My preference used to be ...And Justice for All, but over the years, Ride the Lightning has proven to be my favorite. The songs are the right length of time. They don't follow the pop format of songs like on The Black Album but they also don't extend to Master of Puppets or ...And Justice for All durations. Most of the songs on the album avoid bashing you over the head with E5 power chords over and over again. The album was also the first instance of Metallica branching out and setting themselves apart from their peers in the metal scene. Fade to Black started off as a ballad, but then they gave it some balls and made it a Metalliballad, the blueprint for later songs like Sanitarium, One, The Unforgiven (I, II, and III) and Nothing Else Matters. The Call of Ktulu was their first and most epic instrumental. When I first listened to the album as a kid, I always imagined Ktulu being played with an orchestra. When they actually played the song with an orchestra on their 1999 live release, S & M, it sounded perfect. Even a song that sounded more mainstream for the time, Escape, had an attitude about it that made it unmistakeably Metallica (James Hetfield hates that song, by the way). The other songs on the album have their own character as well. Fight Fire with Fire is speed metal from beginning to end. Ride the Lightning gives you the frantic inner thoughts of someone about to die from corporal punishment. For Whom the Bell Tolls gives you one of the most famous bass riffs of all time. Creeping Death proclaims the righteous fury of God defending his chosen people. Trapped Under Ice is the least memorable track, but I couldn't even mistake that song for something else. For its length, adventurousness, and pure entertainment, Ride the Lightning is my favorite Metallica album of all time. And for the record, Load is a very good album as well.

The thing about Load, Re-Load and St. Anger is that compared to everything else released by everyone else, they're great but as Metallica albums they're no good.

I can agree about Load and Reload but not St Anger, most of that album is straight up trash. If some of the songs were shortened (or they, uh, had guitar solos) that would be one thing. The lyrics are all cringy as fuck too. Death Magnetic has that problem as well but the music is better so its easier to overlook.
