NOTE: SHOWDOWN SPOILERS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Welp, it's finally over.
262 days, 8+ months, and over a dozen defenses, and I am no longer the People's Champion.
You know, when I won this title back at XIII against Kyle Kemp, I genuinely was not expecting to carry it for over half a year, nor was I expecting to overcome even one of my opponents.
You can throw around words like 'historic' or 'great' when it comes to title reigns, and I'd be lying if I said I never bragged here and there about breaking records, though I have always tried to maintain humility in doing so.
It's funny, I've actually been the People's Champion for well over half my tenure with WCF, and guys...
That's Crazy.
That's Awesome.
It's crazy awesome.
So often I think that we tend to define these titles, including my freshly minted internet title (love ya Zombie) as 'gimmick belts' or 'tertiary titles' but I want to say here and now that I have never, EVER looked at either in that way.
While it's true that I may get alot of the credit in the history books, that people will look back and go "holy cow, he held that title for how long?" the truth is that I could not have done this without each and every one of you.
I don't differentiate if you have only voted for me once, if you have voted for me every time, or never even voted for me once, each and every time you have pushed me to do my best, to deliver on the confidence you have put in me. Teo del Sol would not be where he is today if not for each and every one of you.
I have had the opportunity, and the privelege to reign as the People's Champion for eight months, but I wouldn't have gotten to hold it for a single day if not for WCF, and if not for you guys.
I made it a point in my own mind never to ask for votes, never to PM people, never to secretly campaign. I tried to keep everything in those People's Title match threads, to put forth a compelling story for each and every title match, and to make sure that people would 'tune in' to see what barbs we were throwing at each other.
I really feel like I do best in an atmosphere where I am participating with someone else, rather than simply writing something and hoping it wins (hence why I was hoping to have a run with the internet strap). Through the People's Title, I got to do exactly that for a long, LONG time. And I am very happy to have had the chance.
So as I prepare to turn the page, to start a new chapter, and to do a whole lot of photoshopping, I want to say the following.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to each and every one of you. I could not have asked for a more fulfilling and gratifying run as People's Champion.
Thank you to a few people in particular, even if they're not here-
To Kyle Kemp, for putting together a ONE feud even while fighting for the tag belts.
To the People's Choice, for putting together a stable that helped me break through to the next level and get this shot in the first place.
To Torture, for letting me defend my belt against the very first champion, which to me is one of the coolest things ever.
To Seth, for booking me against the very best opponents WCF had to offer and for giving me free reign to tell the stories I wanted to tell.
To Zombie McMorris, you especially inspired me to elevate the championship I had won, seeing what you did with the internet belt I knew I wanted to do the same thing with the People's Title.
To Adam Young, for giving me one of the hardest challenges of my career.
To Spencer Adams, for helping me push the Teddy Blaze character farther than he would ever go otherwise.
And to anyone I didn't name, please know that I not only consider you my business partners and rivals alike- all of you, but that you also some of my greatest confidantes and friends. I honestly cannot see myself anywhere other than WCF, and the proof that this is the greatest community in the world only needs to be represented by the 8-month reign we put together.
WE can do amazing things, and don't let anyone say otherwise.
Last but not least, I would be wrong if I didn't say...
Kevin, I know you'll be a worthy successor and I can't wait to see what you do with the belt. Don't listen to anyone who says that it's a 'gimmick' belt, if you put in the work, you will see results.
