Part One
The summer heat was blistering. It didn’t help that he was in the desert, suit and all. Severan King knew why he was here. He knew that he needed this journey in the desert. He had managed six days thus far. Thirty four more to go and he could make his way home. King knew this would test his endurance and he needed it tested. King’s suit was beyond ruined by this point but he pressed on. We watch as he finally gives in and removes the top half of his suit. He loosens his tie and unbuttons his shirt. His hair is dirty and unwashed. He takes the tie and tosses it aside into the sand. He takes the shirt and wraps it around his head. We watch as he stumbles around. Nothing around him as far as the eye can see. King stops and stares upon the dunes surrounding him. His hands reach out before him almost as if he is reaching for something.
No, I don’t think I should do that. I am a worn man but I shall not succumb. Flash your visions all you wish, I shall deny every time. Tempt me no more, Lucifer. The power you have holds no sway over this vessel of the Lord. Lead me away from this temptation, Father.
King takes a step forward and then stumbles backward, falling down into the sand. He begins to weep.
Why? Why show me this? You are a vile beast. You may have fallen from grace but I shall not. I know your story Morningstar. You rebelled against God. You tempted Jesus like you do me. He denied you and I shall deny you more. I know where I lie and you lie below me, Satan. Take your visions elsewhere.
The tears King cried have created streams down his face. He crawls forward a small bit then drops down, face buried in the sand. In the distance we hear a siren wailing, the sound growing ever closer. Our camera pans to face the sound. After zooming in we see what appears to be red and white lights flashing in the distance. King’s body is barely moving. He does manage to roll onto his back. We see his face is covered in sand and beneath that sand is a very red face. Blisters pimple across his skin. The camera pans up and we can see the lights once more. Close enough now that we can tell it is an ambulance. We watch helplessly as the cameraman sits his camera down and checks King’s neck to see if he can find a pulse. We hear a sigh of relief and watch as the boots run back to the camera. The view pans back up and we see the ambulance come to a stop just beside King’s body. The EMTs rush out and quickly get to work.
EMT #1: What the hell was he thinking? Can you believe he was trying to stay out here for forty days? The man is a nut case.
EMT #2: I’m just glad that the guy in the helicopter called this in. Come on let’s get this guy back as quick as we possibly can.
They rush to load King up as quickly as possible. The guy who spoke first jumped in the back of the ambulance with King. We see that he straps an oxygen mask onto the face of King. The second EMT slams the doors shut and hops in the front of the ambulance. The vehicle takes off shooting up sand. The screen fades to black.
Part Two
The screen shows King laying down in a hospital bed. He appears to be hooked up to several machines. His wife and son sitting next to his bed. His wife’s head is bowed as if in prayer. His son is playing on his cell phone. A nurse is looking over a chart. The room is quiet minus the beeping from the heart monitor. We hear silent mumbling coming from King’s wife. King’s chest rises and falls with each breath he takes. The nurse puts the chart down and walks over to the machines. She makes notes on a different clipboard and places it in the cubby at the end of the bed. She exits the room as a doctor walks in.
Mrs. King?
She raises her head and looks at the doctor. Ezekiel sets his phone down and devotes his attention to the doctor in the room.
Yes, doctor?
Mrs. King what your husband did was very dangerous. He is dehydrated and malnourished. His face is blistered and burnt. It’s a miracle he survived.
No, sir. It was no miracle. A miracle would imply that he didn’t expect to survive. He know that he would be protected while out there. God watched over him because God sent him out there. He is a prophet of the Lord and he too must face the trials.
Ma’am I don’t know if he is a prophet or not. I do know that he should never attempt this again. I mean what kind of man goes into the desert with no food, no water, and no shelter?
A man who knows he is forever protected by God. That is who does that doctor.
The camera pans over to King. Suddenly his heart monitor starts beeping more erratically. The doctor rushes over and starts checking the machines. The sun seems to illuminate the room a little more. We see King’s fingers move ever so slightly. The heart monitor keeps beeping quickly and more of King’s fingers move. The heart monitor begins to slow down. King’s body shoots upright. He turns his head and we hear a few cracks. He then looks right at the doctor.
Where am I?
You are in the hospital Mr. King. Your little trip was not something you should have done. You barely survived, sir.
You think God would let his child die in a desert? I still have work to do.
King stands up and starts unhooking himself from the machines. The doctor positions himself between King and the next machine he is going after. King moves the doctor aside and starts ripping more stuff off of himself. Nurses run in and we see them yelling at King. Yelling for him to stop removing the sensors from his body. King ignores their screams and starts walking for the door. His wife behind him with his clothes in hand. His son staring in shock slowly starts making his way to the door as well. None of the medical personnel seem to know what to do with King. The cameraman rushes to follow King. We see cords and tubes dragging behind him. The hospital workers appear confused and move out of his way. King walks out the front door. His wife rushes ahead of him and runs to their car. King waits for her to pull up and hops in the passenger seat. Ezekiel climbs in back and as soon as his door shuts the car takes off. The camera fades to black.
The Sermon
As the camera rises we see King standing before us. He is neat and clean as opposed to the dirty mess he had been when last the camera had visited him. His wife stands beside him. She looks dolled up in a slimming black dress. Her hair pulled neatly back into a pony tail. King is not wearing his normal white suit. Today he is sporting a solid black on black ensemble. The crowd looks on curiously as this is obviously not the normal for them. We hear a hymn being played in the background with some members of the crowd humming along. As the song nears its end Mrs. King takes her seat next to her son in the front row. Severan lowers his head for a moment and the song ends. He takes his place at the podium we’ve all become so familiar with. He stands there for a moment looking at his congregation. He settles his gaze on different people and smiles at them. He opens his mouth as if to speak and then withdraws and closes it once again. His face gets an inquisitive look on it as King thinks on how he would like to begin. He finally looks ready.
As I’m sure some of you know by now I spent a week in the desert. I felt the prayers from each one of you. My wife, Skylar, organized a group for me and I felt each and every one of those prayers. Thank you. My trip did not last as long as I had hoped since those who do not know who I am thought it best to “rescue” me. They turned to their modern ideologies and said that I shouldn’t be up walking and talking. They did not wish to let me go from the hospital. They said I was dehydrated but little do they know I have God on my side. God would not have let me fail at my task.
King pulls up a glass of water and takes a drink. He sits it back down.
While on my trip I saw some things. Some would call them visions from a mad man but I know them to be prophecies from the Lord. I saw a desolate waste before me. Buildings crumbling all around. Fire wherever it could catch footing. The sky was red as blood. I stood there seeing all of this not knowing what lay before me. I walked those streets and as I walked I felt a sense of loss, a sense of dread. I knew what God was showing me was a vision of a future where I failed him. I kept walking. Corpses lined the streets. Have you ever seen flesh rotting? I have now. Let me tell you, ladies and gentlemen, it is something I hope I never see again. I saw a small child laying before me maggots eating away at her flesh. She called out to me in pain. I tried to help her, Lord knows I tried. I reached out to her and it was as if she floated away from me. No matter what I did I could not reach her. She was a lost soul. I wept for her. I wept tears of sadness because I knew her soul had been lost to the depths of hell. No child should ever experience that pain.
We see King’s face twist ever so slightly as he visibly holds back tears.
I saw a swarm of locust blacken the sky as they flew past me. Toads of great numbers hopped here and there. I looked out into the sea and it was no sea but an ocean of blood. It was then that I knew what I was looking at before me. The plagues of Egypt. God was showing me devastation on the highest level. It was the sign I had asked for. A plague is what is needed for me to get to the masses. For me to spread my word to them. Then and only then would they see the error of their ways. So I thought to myself, how does one utilize a plague? A plague is nothing more than something that causes continual trouble or distress. An annoyance if you will. With plague comes pestilence. Death is right around the corner from there. God showed me how I can manipulate these things to my use much like he did when Moses was fighting back the evil Pharaoh Ramses. Moses showed the world how much wrath can come from God. Ladies and gentlemen, I say to you consider the mercy instead. For he did not harm those loyal to him. He only used the plagues against his enemies to show his chosen people his power. God spoke to me on this journey I have taken and he told me that I was to lead his chosen people today, lead them against the armies of those who would stand against us. A means to an end. A means which I plan to utilize to the fullest.
King’s face is red at this time. He takes another drink from his water. He takes an additional moment to compose himself and straightens his tie. He runs his hands through his hair to fix some of the strands that have fallen.
God spoke to me about something else during my trip. He said to me that I would face a task here soon. That past conquest would rise once more. A false saint would try and lay to waste my good name. I didn’t know it at the time but God was showing me who I would be facing soon. When I got home from the hospital I took a look at the pay per view card. Greg St Matthews, Heavy Metal Machine, and myself in a no disqualification matchup. I laughed when I realized that the false saint is Matthews. When the obstacle that I’ve already overcome has somehow managed to weasel his way back into my light. Ladies and gentlemen, words were spoken to me about this match. God told me he said ‘King you are my chosen. This is but a test. A test you will pass with flying colors. But a test you must take regardless.’ I thought for a moment on this. Why? Why must I complete a task that I have already done? Why must I defeat a false saint that is nothing to me? Then it dawned on me. It finally clicked. God was giving me the easiest test of all. Something like this was not a punishment but a reward. A way of saying thank you, Severan, for being so loyal here have a break. This test is a repeat. Like the tests you all have each day. Your children are a test. Our relationships with God are a test. We do our best to overcome each of these test. When we succeed we are rewarded in the next life. Tonight what I want is for each of you to take away from this sermon is that there are things we think are testing us when in reality God provides and will always open the door for you. He will see to your needs and provide. You may never be chosen like I am and you may never hear his words directly but you can be certain that I will. As long as I am here to lead you, as long as you are here to be led, God will be sure to send me his words so I may lend them to you. Let us bow our heads for a prayer before we part this evening.
King waits until everyone has their head bowed before doing so to his own.
Lord, it’s me again but you knew that. I know that often times, Lord, you get people praying to you for money or love. I already know that you provide and I shall never ask for either of those from you. Your love is all I need. I just want to thank you dear God for letting me hear your voice. Letting your words pour over me. Letting me get a glimpse of your being. I know you’ve chosen to let me have a light test this week and I want to thank you for that. Lord, I promise you that I shall use the visions you have given me to do your work. I know what they mean and I will make it happen for you. Thank you, Lord.
King raises his head once more and looks out over the crowd. He does a slight bow and mouths the words ‘thank you’. He picks up his bible off the podium and turns to walk back behind the curtain. The camera fades to black.
