I've been listening to the Lapsed Fan's review of Wrestlemania XI (WM11), one of the worst (if not THE worst) Wrestlemanias of all time. If I could rewrite the card, it would look like this:
WWF Championship Match
Bob Backlund (c) vs. Diesel
Lawrence Taylor vs. Shawn Michaels
Bret Hart vs. Lex Luger
WWF Tag Team Championship Match
The Smokin' Gunns (c) vs. Owen Hart and Mystery Partner (Yokozuna)
The Undertaker vs. Bam Bam Bigelow
WWF Intercontinental Championship Match
Jeff Jarrett (c) vs. Razor Ramon
Battle Royal with 20 random guys for some kind of prize
Here's how I would have booked things in the months leading to WM11. At the Survivor Series, Backlund still wins the title from Bret and Diesel and Shawn still break up.
At the Royal Rumble, Bret gets a rematch. When he's on the verge of winning, Lex Luger comes in and knocks Bret out with the elbow, turning him heel. Luger's reason for turning on Bret is that he's jealous. 1994 was supposed to be his year, but Bret ended up being the champion at WM10 and having a career year while Luger floundered. He wants to prove that he's better than Bret and all the glory Bret got should have been his.
Diesel dominates the 95 Rumble much like he dominated the 94 Rumble. He last eliminates Shawn Michaels, making him the #1 contender. I would have had Diesel come out at number 30 and eliminate whoever was left by himself, much like Matanza did when he debuted in Lucha Underground during their version of the Royal Rumble, Aztec Warfare.
After Shawn is eliminated in the Rumble, Diesel goes to shake Lawrence Taylor's hand. Shawn interrupts the moment to get in Diesel's face, but LT tells him to back off and not be a sore loser, even offering to shake his hand to recognize his performance. Shawn shoves LT and the feud is on. Shawn then recruits Sid as his backup, a one man All-Pro team to counter LT's. Shawn could work with a broomstick, so he can definitely work with a guy who's never wrestled.
The Undertaker can still feud with the Million Dollar Corporation. Just put in Bam Bam, who could have a better match than Bundy.
Here's how I would have booked the matches:
Diesel main events the show and wins in 9 seconds. He should have always been booked as the Goldberg type: go in, kick ass, and leave. I think fans would have liked him as champion better if that was how they booked him.
LT beats Shawn and Sid can attack Shawn the next night like they did in reality.
Luger beats Bret. The two go on to feud until Summerslam, where Bret wins a Career Threatening Match to send Luger back to WCW. This would have been better for Bret than fighting Isaac Yankem, DDS.
Same result for the tag team title match.
Undertaker beats Bam Bam. Bam Bam can still turn face like he did and feud with the Million Dollar Corporation, maybe even forming an alliance with the Undertaker.
Razor wins back the IC title. Double J always sucked. Razor was the man in the IC division. Why keep the title off him for more than two months?
British Bulldog wins the battle royal for a trophy or money or some kind of title shot. Honestly, I couldn't think of another match for Davey. Looking at the roster in April 1995, things were bleak. He was the best of the rest. I didn't want to book him in a match with some nobody and battle royals are always fun.
It wouldn't have been an all time great WM, but it would have been better than what they produced.
