Welcome to the real world.
Since the editorials were my idea originally and I have so far failed to actually bother putting the effort into doing one, I figured I’d finally better get off my ass the afternoon of my Year 12 Ball and write this. Blades talker about grammar, and that’s one aspect, but I’m here to deliver a brief talk on what I feel can do great things for a roleplayer such as you, the reader.
CD, you don’t have to listen. Your RPs are always good because they’re like the current appearances of wrestlers like Austin and the Rock – few and far between, and the actual appearance of one is a major event in itself.
So, my little talk is designed around the aspect of roleplaying that rather a lot of newer members or fedders in general tend to ignore – that of the storytelling. A random roleplay in some random situation is well and good, but what ties it to your character or anything else your character has ever done? I’ll give you a quick example.
Knowing that War would be coming soon, and knowing that the storytelling aspect of roleplaying is an important one, I decided to establish a base for the RPs I would write for War. If anyone remembers that long ago, one of my RPs was about Skyler going to hire a detective to search for his former girlfriend. At this time, I hadn’t written the Origins, but I’ll get to that. So, with a week or two for my detectives to search for this girl, I went back to facing Outcast. Looking back at the original War RPs and a few weeks after to see where Jack of Blades started his reign of terror in RPing, I stumbled upon the Origins of Jack and Ace. I figured ‘hey, that’s a great idea to copy from!’ and stole the idea, simply filling in Skyler’s story instead of Jack’s and with less and smaller words. Now, having beaten Outcast with the Origins series, I began the Voice story – and if you’ve been reading my RPs, you’ll know what happens.
I won’t go any further into my example, because I’ll end up revealing what happens, but you can see that there’s something tying them together. I did the same thing with One against vice, where Skyler has something to do, so he leaves to go find out who he is. Storytelling is a good way to get ideas – you can always develop on ideas, you can create a back story for your character that you can use in later RPs, you can travel further roots afterwards and mention the story in a year or two.
I guess that’s pretty much it – have a story. Not everything needs it – certain things like Series (see LJ, JoB, Vice) can work just as well – but that’s a way I’ve found effective and convenient to use.
Now, I should be dancing in a few hours, so I must depart. I guess I’ll do this again eventually. Ciao.
