I can remember when
there were times I thought we’d never eat again,
and salvation was our drinking
Skyler Striker, along with Dylan Ryder and Jayden Sarek, his two loyal friends, are at a bar, drinking beers after a good night out. The three are laughing loudly and enjoying themselves immensely, and reminiscing about times long past – the three having been friends since their teenage years.
Skyler: It’s been ages since then… I sure miss them. Back then, we were a team. We were a real team, not like Team NCW. We were friends, we worked together because we enjoyed it, not because we wanted something out of the alliance.
Dylan: Yeah…
[[Begin Flashbacks]]
Things were different then,
it was five of us against the world but then,
the world sure seemed much smaller
A flashback plays of five men in a ring, facing off and jaw-jacking against three other wrestlers from the ring. One of the five is clearly Skyler, two others are Dylan and Jayden, although they look much younger. The other two are new – one is tall, muscled, and has bleach blonde short hair. He wears a dark maroon set of pants and has no shirt, and is clearly the bodyguard of the group. The other is small, English, and looks very cunning and sneaky. He has a mop of black hair and his ribs are taped, and he also wears a set of maroon pants – as is everyone, for the five seem to be a stable. The three wrestlers they are jaw-jacking at leave and the five pose for the crowd, being cheered wildly and their video plays as they walk away, reading ‘Index 5’.
Broken down, down and out
Out of gas, out of food without a doubt
The flashback comes to a slightly later time where the five, traveling to another city in a banged-up old van, have broken down on the road. Skyler is arguing with the English character while Dylan, Jayden and the bigger man look on.
Flashback Jayden: Look at them fight… it’s funny. Don’t you think so, Andrew?
Flashback Andrew: It happens too often. Skyler’s the leader, and Scott just doesn’t want to accept it.
Andrew is obviously the bigger man and Scott the Englishman, and eventually Scott goes into the distance, where a small town is visible, but for now, Skyler goes and sits on top of the van, Jayden and Andrew lean on it, and Dylan sits on the ground, his usual quiet self.
Broken up, up in arms
armed to the teeth with ways to kill the pain
The scene fades to a shot of Skyler, Jayden, Andrew and Dylan bursting into a hotel room through the door to find Scott pointing a gun at his head, facing the window. Scott turns around, and Skyler yells something, but we hear no sound from anything. Scott shrugs and grins, and pulls the trigger.
Flashback Skyler: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I was around back when
we would fight each other for a couch or bed,
though we’d never end up sleeping
The shot fades into the five when they were much younger, all about twelve years old. They are all at a sleepover and having a pillow fight, feathers flying everywhere. Skyler pretends to pin Scott and they all laugh as Andrew counts the three. An older woman comes out, one of the boys’ mothers, and tells them to go to bed. The boys all start scrambling for the biggest mattress, and Andrew gets it, being the biggest. They all laugh and eventually hop in and the light is turned off.
We could rely on friends
through the good, the bad,
the ugly times that we spent together when we were
stealing our daily bread,
naming vans until they all became our friends,
at least until they left us…
Scott is slipping through a small gap in a gate into a car junkyard, the other four on the outside. They are all about sixteen, and Scott manages to break through, opening the gate from the inside and letting the others through.
Flashback Jayden: Nice job, Scott!
Flashback Scott: No probs, Jay. All in a day’s work.
The five go through the yard and eventually find a nice tall pile, scrambling to the top, where Skyler poses and the others laugh.
Flashback Skyler: I henceforth name this: The Skyler High Mountain!
I wouldn’t trade these drunken days to be like you,
and say “I’ll be safe, I’m just waiting for,
waiting for life to start…”
The shot fades to Dylan’s 18th birthday party at his house. There is a Christmas tree up, so it is late in the year, and everyone else has a can of beer in their hands, meaning Dylan must be the last birthday of the five. Scott offers Dylan a can, but Dylan refuses him.
Flashback Dylan: No thanks. I don’t plan on drinking. It ruins your mind.
Flashback Jayden: It ruins your mum’s mind!
The five laugh and toast their cans in the air.
Flashback Andrew: What are we toasting to?
Flashback Skyler: We’re waiting for life to start! If you guys thought this was something, then you ain’t seen nothing yet!
The five laugh again and take a drink, although Dylan’s is water.
You can hate what we create
But we’ll be standing here when everything falls apart
The scene fades to three years before where Dylan, Jayden and Skyler are today. It is raining, and Andrew, Jayden, Dylan and Skyler are in line in front of a podium, which is set up in front of the casket, the tombstone reading “Scott Southland: Friend to all who called him so.”.
Flashback Skyler: …those were the best days. R.I.P, Scott. We miss you.
The casket lowers and the four bow their heads in respect.
[[End Flashbacks]]
Jayden, Dylan and Skyler toast their beers in the air, their mood now a little hampered.
Jayden: What do we toast to?
Skyler: Last time, we waited for life to start… for Scott, it was over before it finished, and we haven’t heard from Andrew since the funeral. I say we toast to whatever is to come… and that we three make the most of the rest of life.
Dylan: A toast.
Jayden: A toast.
The three raise their bottles again and drink, setting the bottles down on the bench at the same time, and the scene finishes on the view of those three bottles, although two bottles appear faded behind them.
