The scene opens within the confines of the Vice family living room. A familiar setting these days leading up to One. Janie and Jimmy Vice are seated on the couch. Janie leaning forward, chewing on her nails with worry. Jimmy is leaning back into the soft cushions. His eyes have big, dark bags beneath them, probably caused by sleepless nights worrying about the safety and whereabouts of his brother.
The Vice twins are joined by several friends today in their San Diego home. Tyler Durden, Danny’s former trainer, sits on a stool near the entranceway to the kitchen. Jake Hudson, the manager of JJ Biggs and co-manager of Disorder by Design, is seated on a folding chair across the room from the twins. And of course, JJ Biggs, “The Greatest”, Danny’s tag team partner, sits in the gaudy leather recliner. Seated like a king overlooking his court.
JJ Biggs: The Greatest is hungry.
Tyler Durden: The Greatest needs to worry about something other than himself.
JJ Biggs (to Jake Hudson): Who is this that dares speak in such a way?
Jake Hudson: Relax everyone. We’re all extremely anxious. This is a multi-million dollar event coming up. I mean we're talking about One! And we're all sitting here twiddling our thumbs when we don’t even know where one of the major stars is right now!
Jimmy Vice: He will be there.
JJ Biggs: Of course I will.
Jake Hudson: I meant Danny. But yes Biggs, you’re the most important star of course.
Janie Vice: Please. All this talk about One is just making me all the more anxious. All I get is one e-mail in the past week. That’s it. He doesn’t call us, write us, send a smoke signal…
Tyler Durden: You can read smoke signal?
Janie Vice: It was a figure of speech.
Tyler Durden: That would just be incredibly sexy if you could.
Jimmy Vice: Alright. Settle down everyone. He said he’s going to be there on Sunday. There’s no reason to get all worried. I’m sure we’ll see the same high-flying and death-defying Danny Vice we’ve all seen before.
Tyler Durden: I wouldn’t be so sure. He didn’t even sound like the same man when I spoke to him on the phone. He was all into some rebirth, reconnecting with himself mambo-jambo. Like Dr. Phil type shit.
Janie Vice: I wouldn’t put it that way. He seems more focused. His word choice was different in that e-mail. He seemed hungry again, like the way he was when he first came to the WCF. No longer just content with standing pat as far as his abilities or who he was as a person. He wanted to be bigger, smarter, stronger, faster…better.
The house phone rings. Janie jumps up to grab it as quick as possible, nearly knocking Jimmy off the couch in the process.
Janie Vice: Hello?
Voice on the phone: Janie?
Janie Vice: Danny is that you?
Danny Vice (on telephone): Janie. It’s me. I know you’re worried about me. Fearful I might do something stupid and hurt myself. President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said ‘the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. What most people do not realize or know, is that he said it is “nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance”. This Sunday, there is no retreat. And I assure you that Skyler Striker is no nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror. This match is just two men, settling the score, once and for all.
Janie Vice: Danny just come back home so we…
She hears only a click, followed by a dial tone.
Jimmy Vice: What did he say?
Janie Vice: He said…we have nothing to be afraid of.
The scene fades out.
