“I am not perfect, and I don’t claim to be – and if that’s what you wanted, then I am so sorry…”
-excerpt from ‘Better Version’ by Shinedown
The camera fades down to a scene of the outside of a suburban doctor’s office. The outside windows and doors are clean, and the sign above reads ‘Doctor Sheedy’s Medical Clinic’. A figure walks up to the door, with a black hood over his head. He has a fairly obvious limp on his right leg and winces every time he puts his weight on it. We can only tell from our point of view that he is wearing sunglasses and has black jeans with a pink and black striped long sleeved shirt on. The left sleeve is empty and dangling freely, and because of the camera view we cannot see the man’s left arm. His shoes are simple everyday trainers and the man surveys the sign. He pulls open the door with his right arm and enters the clinic, where a receptionist dressed in white welcomes him.
Receptionist: Hey there, how are you?
Man: I’ve been better. As you can probably tell. I’m here to see Dr. Sheedy.
Receptionist: Do you have an appointment?
Man: Yes, I do. I booked it yesterday, I was in a hurry.
Receptionist: Name?
The man glances around the room to check that it is not full of people who could be eavesdropping and after seeing that the clinic is empty except for him, he relaxes and pulls off his hood. As it drops, we see the spectacular spiked, platinum blonde hair and the smile that means it can only be one person. From this angle, we can also see that he is wearing a sling on his left arm.
Man: The name is Skyler Striker.
The receptionist logs it into the computer and ratifies it.
Receptionist: This way, Skyler.
She stands and takes Skyler into a hallway and they enter a room on the right.
Receptionist: Here you go. Dr. Sheedy will be along in a few seconds.
SS: Cheers. By the way, before you go, I must say that you have a beautiful name, Ashley.
Ashley: Thankyou very much, Skyler.
The receptionist giggles as she leaves the room and Skyler laughs to himself. He sits down on the med-bed and removes his sunglasses, behind which we see a pair of contact red eyes. They are filled with emotion, and almost have a fire in them. Skyler looks around the room and observes the various medical posters on the walls and the equipment in all of the cupboards. He sighs and pulls up his right pant leg, looking at the bruise he received last week at the hands of Danny Vice’s chair. It is then that Dr. Sheedy enters the room, dressed in relatively casual clothes. Skyler readies himself to stand and greet him, but Dr. Sheedy will not allow this and pushes Skyler back onto the bed.
D.S: I’d advise you don’t do that, Skyler. You don’t want to be doing any more damage to yourself.
SS: I’ll live. Vice, on the other hand, isn’t going to get off so easy.
D.S: Calm down, Skyler. Let me have a look. Did you bring those x-rays?
SS: Yes, I did. They’re in this file.
Skyler pulls out a yellow envelope from his pocket and hands it to Dr. Sheedy, who opens the paper and reads the contents.
SS: Anything bad? Am I allowed to wrestle?
D.S: Calm down, Skyler! Even if it’s fine – which it is – I still have to check your muscles to see if they’re okay.
SS: Well, at least I don’t have a broken leg.
D.S: You were very close to having one. If Vice had brought that chair down on that leg one more time, you may have had a shattered kneecap, and that would most certainly have put you out of commission.
SS: Hurry up and check the muscles. Is my arm alright to take out of the sling now?
D.S: I don’t know, Skyler! I haven’t checked it yet!
Doctor Sheedy lets out a laugh, smiling widely at Striker’s enthusiasm towards his profession.
D.S: You’re very anxious to get in that ring on Sunday, aren’t you?
SS: Very much so. I have business with Vice that needs dealing with.
D.S: From what I’ve seen of him, it looks like he has business of his own to attend to..
SS: Oh, right, the whole truck attack thing… I honestly don’t know what to say. If Jimmy had been as skilled as Danny, which I presumed him to be, he would have reversed it and put me down instead. Plus, Danny didn’t even defend him. How am I supposed to go and look out for Danny, Jimmy and myself all at once? It doesn’t work. I’m so frustrated right now.
Dr. Sheedy has been checking Skyler’s muscle reactions during the dialogue.
D.S: Well, in terms of you, you’re pretty much okay. However, there is a catch if you want to wrestle on Sunday.
SS: Go on…
D.S: Until then, you’re going to have to keep that sling on.. and also have one crutch just to make sure you don’t injure yourself any further before the week is out.
SS: You’re kidding me, right? I knew I had to make sacrifices against Sires last week, I pulled out all the stops, and now my leg may or may not give out? You’re freaking kidding me.
D.S: Unfortunately not, Skyler. You have to keep the sling and the crutch on until right before your match, and put them on as soon as you’re done with the match. After you come back a week from today, you can take off the sling and crutch and you’re fine for School of Pain.
SS: Well, that’s a plus.
D.S: Have you decided what type of match you’re going to have at School of Pain?
SS: I have.
D.S: Well, nothing too brutal. Make sure you don’t take yourself out for good. You’re free to go whenever you want, Skyler. Good luck and I’ll se you here same time, same place next week.
SS: Will do.
Dr. Sheedy hands Skyler the crutch and he puts it under his right arm, with a sling on the other arm. Skyler shakes his head at himself and leaves the room, nodding to Ashley on his way past.
SS: Put it on my tab, I’m paying next week.
Ashley: Will do, Skyler.
Skyler manages to pull the door open with great difficulty and leaves the clinic, the camera still following him. He spies a bench nearby and sits down, putting his crutch at rest.
SS: Yeah, cameraman – come here for a second. You’re taping this for medical footage for WCF, right?
CM: Ya.
SS: Well, record this as a message for Danny Vice, Jack of Blades and Dake Ken.
CM: Okay. We’re ready when you want to.
SS: Danny, I feel sorry for you. But there are no friends in the ring, and I won’t let up either here or at School of Pain. This week, a tag match – our first in the WCF, against each other. I will not relent, and you are my main target. Also, I have another little surprise for you – at School of Pain, it’s going to be you and me – IN A LADDER MATCH!! Hanging above the ring? For the winner, I’m not sure yet. I’ll figure that one out after this week’s Slam. But I have something for the loser. The loser gets a one year rematch shot - at any time during the next year, up until School of Pain 2007, the loser can challenge the winner to a match of their choice whenever they want. So both sides get something, eh? We will have another match, Danny, whether you like it or not.
Skyler pauses for breath and begins his next mini tirade.
SS: Jack of Blades and Dake Ken: One on my side, one not. Jack, you’ve risen through the ranks fast. I’m looking forward to facing you, to be honest. I finally have someone to test my skills against. I’m not going to bother giving you crap because I know you’ll dish it back out twice as fast and twice as hard. In the ring, that’s my attitude. Whatever you give me, I’ll give back twice as hard and twice as fast. Dake Ken – I don’t know you, I haven’t seen you, but you’d better damn well be in that ring on Sunday, because at my current level, I’m not going to be 100%. I’m not perfect – I don’t claim to be. We all take falls, and I’ve taken my share of them last week. This week, it’s a whole different story. It’s my turn to dish out the pain. Jack, Dake, Danny – don’t be late. You’ve all got dates with destiny.
As Skyler stops speaking, he just stares into the camera. Skyler’s eyes are filled with adrenalin and fury, and he leans back, staring into the sky.
SS: Shut it off..
The cameraman does so and Skyler speaks to himself.
SS: I am so screwed… I can’t train, and I have a tag and ladder match within the next two weeks. Fun..
