As a narrator, I'd love for this scene to be opening with a an epically sweeping battle, across the planes of Kem with giant Elephants, wargs, orcs, wizards and the occassional wise cracking scamp, probably with some sort of seige at the end with an awesome conclusion where the hero stabs the big bad guy in the face with an over the top sword that he or she had to get from some obscure place and spend a lifetime to do it. He or she could scream as the final blow hits something like “AND THIS IS WHY I HATE VEGETABLES!” Basically, it'd be amazing.
Alas, this isn't one of those stories today. It's set in a basement mostly. Yup. A basement. Such is life. Magic happens, mind. Or at least they think so, you never know with Andre Jenson and his merry band of LARPers but nevertheless, we're in a basement.
The layout of the scene is pretty straightforward. There were a bunch of candles lining the walls, a stone altar in the middle of the room, different inscriptions on the stone floor being lit by the soft glow of candlelight, flickering shadows on the walls, generally giving the air of secrecy and gloom. Or gloomy secrecy, maybe gloomecy? Either way, you get the picture. The stone walls were plain, rough hewn stone, wooden beams meeting them at the top and going across the ceiling to support the floor above.
Four distinct figures lined up around the altar, all wearing hoods and robes. There was a slight female form, at the head of the altar with a book in her hand. Two men, one huge and one average sized flanking the sides and a diminutive figure at the foot, holding a staff. They all were staring in silence at the body that was lying on the altar, naked. Why do they always have to be naked? Of course, the body on the altar was AJ, who else would it be? No one else is really possessed by some inter dimensional super beings after all.
Amy started to chant after flipping open the book, while Sir Slashalot and Lord Ashbury held AJ down from each side and LGB held the staff high as he could.
Amy began. “With the thread of the crimes of your own design
I bind your evil Three times seven times.
I bind you from Behind
I bind you from Before
That you'll hurt my people never ever more”
Static electricity began to build up in the air as she continued her chant, the candles flickered and a soft breeze began to blow in the basement, creating a chill in the air.
“I bind you from the Left
I bind you from the Right
I bind you by Day
And I bind you by Night. “
AJ began to writhe and squirm on the altar, giving a deep moan. Slashalot and Ashbury both tightened their grips on him. Slashalot staring at his face while AJ grimaced and snarled at no one in particular.
More urgently now, as the static electricity swirled in the air with more power and vengeance, Amy continued, almost shouting against the roaring of the now violent winds.
“I bind you from Below
I bind you from Above
That you may ever know
The laws of Life and Love
I bind you with your own Good conscience Within
And so let this magic Unfold And spin!”
The whole basement shook at this point, with an enormous amount of static electicity in the air, you could hear it crackle and pop, while everyone braced themselves against the wind. It's a good job they were wearing robes and hoods because their hair would be like upright at this point. With a loud, terrifying scream AJ sat up, them collapsed. The whole basement was completely dark after the candles were blown out by the latest winds. Dark with the exception of a faint light that was eminating from the staff that LGB held. The light pulsed with a faint blue glow at the tip of the staff as there was silence. No wind, no hiss of electricity, not even a breath could be heard in the silence.
A groan broke it. “Guys?” It was AJ. “I feel like shit.”
The tension was released, everyone in the room made some sort of congratulatory cheer. Even Sir Slashalot let out what could have been heard of as a sigh of relief, he definitely made an appreciative nod.
“You're back?” Asked Amy
“I feel like I've just had my brain in a blender then put in a box and handled by the postal service for a few months. And why is it so dark?”
“Sorry about that, the candles all went out when we did the spell, hold on.” She switched on the basement lights and immediately AJ shied away from the light.
“That's bright,” he muttered “The rippers didn't like the light too much, I've spent most of the past few months in dark places.” He sat up and looked down the altar. “I'm naked,” he stated, then shrugged. “Suppose it could be worse.” He tried to move his legs to swing off the altar and stand up, then collapsed with a groan. “I was wrong.” He mumbled, muffled while he was lying face first on the basement floor.
A couple of days later, Amy was eating some breakfast with LGB in the ample kitchen that was housed in AJ's residence on the isle of Kem. LGB was sitting on the breakfast bar, his legs dangling down while crunching on some cereal, while Amy was busy on her laptop, trying to buy some replacements for stuff that AJ had destroyed in the past month. She was drinking a cup of coffee, thinking about how AJ had been sleeping for the past 48 hours non-stop after the spell.
“I need to check on him,” she thought to herself, “to make sure he's OK” she sighed. Just as she stood to go into the bedroom, she heard a shuffling come through to the kitchen. A slow, zombie like shuffling, followed by a loud long moan. She froze, slowly reaching for any sort of weapon she could find while signalling to LGB to watch out. AJ appeared in the door, shuffling his feet in his slippers with the biggest yawn you could possibly see in a man.
“Hi guys” he said, while helping himself to some apples. “I feel so refreshed right now, how long's it been?”
“Bout two days.” Amy replied.
“A record!” AJ smiled, ruefully.
“How do you feel now?”
“I'm good, m'lady. I'm good. Everything is tip top, everything is good. It's like I've had a rejuvenation potion and that got rid of any lingering poisons on my sheet. The only thing I have trouble with is this match I have on Sunday.”
“What about it?”
“Well, I don't know exactly what I'm to do. I mean, the rippers have told me everything. Oblivion means something to them or some shit, so when I pinned him at War they latched on to me, then the power of the TV title amplified that. Basically, means that I've been possessed since I got here on my debut and frankly, it's Oblivion's fault. So I want to treat him like I treat a ruby dragon when they attack my home village. He needs to be stopped and destroyed.”
“Simple then aint it? You ally with Bonnie and the both of you take it in turns to punch him in the face.”
“Not really, no. Even though they are gone now, I still have this lingering irrational dislike of ol' Bonnie Blue.” While he says this, he mocks her accent and sneers. “No idea how this is going to go, hopefully it'll subside one day but at the moment I see both of them as someone I just want to hurt, someone I only want to do double damage to, someone I'd use my last spell of the day to take out. It's a pickle!”
Suddenly, the staff, which until now has been faintly pulsing its blue light softly started to move all by itself.
“Odd,” AJ said while looking at it move. “Stay away from it and open the doors”
Amy gave him a quizzical look as he said this, but complied anyway. She pressed a button and all the doors and windows opened. AJ silently motioned for her to follow him. They went up to the roof and AJ quickly got into the helicopter he keeps on his private helipad.
“What are we doing?” Asked Amy, slightly unnerved by the sudden movement of a cross dimensional alien possessed staff.
“Gonna follow it.” Said AJ, determinedly. He pressed a few buttons and the helicopter rotators burst into life as they saw the staff fly out of the window below them.
They followed the staff at a safe distance, its blue glow guiding them in the blackness of the night below. Eventually, they came to a mountain range and see the staff plummet down to the trees below. He circled the 'copter round and found a good place to land. He jumped out and started to look around for more signs of the staff. He saw a faint blue light up in the distance, toward a clearing. It was starting to rain now, “nevermind” he thought, “we'll see where these things are going at least.”
He stepped out of the clearing and immediately froze. Ahead of him in the clearing was Bonnie Blue, who looked like she had just been hiking or something, wearing a backpack and standing there watching him herself. A slight anger started to swell inside of AJ but before he could say anything Bonnie put her fingers to her lips and pointed at the staff on the ground in the middle of the clearing, not more than 20 feet away from both of them. I say on the ground, it's more like 6 feet off the ground, spewing out flashes of light and tiny black dots, millions upon millions of them. They all seemed to be congregating above the staff, enough to make a sort of mass, or a form of just a round ball. AJ and Bonnie both stood absolutely still, taking this in as the staff suddenly stopped spewing out light and darkness and fell to the floor. The dark ball hovered for a moment and started flying, almost like a swarm to another part of the clearing, creating a huge screech of a noise and a crack. Swarming over and over each other, creating what looked like a face. It began to talk, maybe. It was in a language that AJ couldn't understand or knew what was happening. The thing spoke and spoke, then another screech and crack after which, silence.
AJ looked at Bonnie, Bonnie looked at AJ, AJ then looked at Oblivion so did Bonnie. Oblivion stared back at them both, standing where the rippers once were...
