The Church Without Walls, Houston Texas
I always stepped into this little church when I was a kid. My father used to say that when in doubt, you could always come here and it would help you to think. Being a kid, I didn't really understand what he meant until I walked into the church crying from being bullied. My Pastor always had the right words even when he didn't speak. The greatest thing about that church was no matter what time I was there, I always felt better. I'm not the most religious guy but I strongly believe in God after all the wonders he's done for me.
It's been three to four years since I've stepped into the squared circle. After retiring from Midwest Extreme Wrestling, I've settled down back in Houston and finally got married. My two lovely daughters, Serenity and Athena, are the most important aspects of my life. Nothing could go wrong until Samantha (wife) was pushing for a divorce. She changed after her drinking got worse. The factors are simple. Her father passed away, and the children have a better relationship with me than her. I'm trying my best to see the outcome in a positive light but maybe fate has decided for us already. It's not fair for Serenity, and Athena but I guess I needed some time to think. Like I said, what better place ehh? It was nine at night, and I walked into the building with my head down. The stage was still the same. Red carpets, band equipment on the left, benches for the choir on the right, and the podium center stage with the baptism tank behind it. Sitting down in the second row from the stage, I didn't know what to say.
Andre Holmes
I know you hear me up there God. I need your guidance right now, my life is not what people would say to be the status quo. Samantha wants a divorce, my children are going insane over the fact I want to keep our marriage stable, and on top of all this, I want to go back to Professional Wrestling. I chose to retire yet you know deep inside I've been struggling to decide what I really need. I miss it, you know? I just need a sign.
Pastor Brown
Well isn't that funny?
Andre Holmes
Pastor Brown?
It was great to see the man who supported me all my life. His voice captured my attention, and he walked from behind to sit down beside me on the bench. He was dressed all formally as usual, and had that big smile with his glasses on. I didn't care about the grey hair on his head, or the wrinkles all over his fading dark skin. He was old yes but always energetic as a young adult.
Pastor Brown
How many times have you stepped into this church Andre?
Andre Holmes
More than I can remember.
Pastor Brown
Why is that?
Andre Holmes
Because this is the one place in the world I can always just figure out my problems. Ironically, I'm trying to figure this one I have right now.
Pastor Brown
Your divorce.
Andre Holmes
Yeah...my divorce.
Pastor Brown
Or maybe it's something else. It's not your divorce, it's Professional Wrestling?
How did he kno- never mind. I stared at him, and couldn't believe he knew exactly what I was feeling. The words were just stuttering yet he knew the truth. I sighed, and just had to tell him what's up.
Andre Holmes
I miss it every day. The divorce I don't care about anymore. It's going to happen, and I can't do anything to stop it but I can't resist the one thing I love, and it's the one thing that got me where I am now. Every time I wake up, I can just hear them chanting my name or the announcer screaming my name. What is there to do when you know what you need to do? Yet still, you have a responsibility back home?
Pastor Brown
It all sounds like excuses to me.
Andre Holmes
What?....Are you kidding me?
Pastor Brown
I didn't mean to offend. Listen Andre, when you walked into my church for the very first time, you remember what I said?
Andre Holmes
Your fly is down.
Pastor Brown
....After that.
Andre Holmes
"I see something in you. You have a great fire to become the greatest athlete in your profession. Always be true to yourself, and be strong."
Pastor Brown
You've pushed through everything, and were at the top of your career. So why stop now when you can do it again?
As much as I didn't want to hear the cliche lecture, this time the old geezer was right. In World Extreme Federation, I won the WEF Championship on my debut, and even became the unified Midwest Extreme Wrestling Undisputed Champion. Through hard work, and determination I rose up to the top of the world, and now I'm stuck at the bottom because of my own choices.
Pastor Brown
Remember Andre, it's never too late while the Lord is watching over you. Have a good night.
He got up, and left. This time, his words truly touched my soul. I had to get back, I couldn't take it anymore. It's now or never, and I know the one place where it could happen at. Wrestling Championship Federation.
The Holmes Residence, Decision Made
There's no place like home, and yet my home didn't feel like it at the time. I returned from church to find my soon to be ex-wife back in the kitchen with an empty bottle of whiskey, and three shot glasses used up. It was disgusting to see my wife sitting behind the counter, and just burying her face into her hand. The keys were placed on the counter after I shut the door, and armed the security system. She heard me, and I had to meet the beast. Samantha looked depressed. Her blonde hair covering half of her face, the wedding ring almost falling off her finger, and also dressed in nothing but gym wear with a leather jacket on. When she saw my face, she sighed even more.
Samantha Holmes
Feeling better, seeing me like this?
Andre Holmes
Would you like me to say yes?
Samantha Holmes
I want you to just say yes to this divorce. I can't live like this!
Andre Holmes
Live like what?! A drunken bitch?! I didn't force you to drink all day, and become a complete bitch to everyone you see! Unfortunately, I have to put up with it for the sake of our children. As a matter of fact, do you even remember we have kids?
Samantha Holmes
They're YOUR kids, not me.
That...crossed the line. Never in my life have I ever heard someone say that to my face. Let alone it came from the mother of my kids. The emotions were just boiling, and my fists clenched, and shaking.
Andre Holmes
How could you say that?! Are you FUCKING kidding me?!
Samantha Holmes
It's the truth. They don't talk to me, they don't listen to me, and they damn sure pretend I don't exist.
Andre Holmes
It's because you've changed the worst. The drinking is getting worse, and-- you've started already. A whiskey bottle? I am sick and tired of your bullshit! When will you stop drinking, and just work together?!
Samantha Holmes
When you actually just go through with the divorce!
Another argument broke out between us. Our voices raised to the highest volume, and we had the intent to slaughter each other verbally. Ever played Skyrim, and seen the dragons fighting? That is the equivalent to our lethal debate. We didn't stop until we heard a small voice.
Athena Holmes
Daddy, Mommy?
Athena was only six years old, the younger daughter. We tried to play off like nothing happened but she saw everything. She was tearing up in her pink pajamas, and her brunette hair was out of place. I approached her on the stairs, and kneeled for an eye to eye conversation. A fake smile wasn't good enough, and she almost broke out.
Athena Holmes
Please stop arguing...
Andre Holmes
Okay baby, did I wake you up?
Athena Holmes
Mhm....
Andre Holmes
I'm sorry baby, here let me bring you to bed, and tuck you in.
I felt so terrible. I picked up Athena in my arms, and carried her up stairs to her own room. I enjoyed her room. Small, painted in pink, her little toys in one corner with her bed by the window. Gently placed her in the bed, and even covered most of her body with the sheets tucking her in nice, and well.
Athena Holmes
Hey daddy?
Andre Holmes
Yes baby?
Athena Holmes
Do you think I'll become a wrestler like you one day?
I had to take a seat next to her for this.
Andre Holmes
Of course! There's nothing stopping you.
Athena Holmes
Even as big as you?
Andre Holmes
Maybe bigger than me. You never know how far you can go if you continue to push yourself, and never give up. You can do anything you want as long as you believe in yourself. That's the truth.
Athena Holmes
So...do you think you will go back to wrestling?
The tears were fighting to get pass me, and I had to think hard about this. I looked into my daughter's blue eyes, and gave her the most genuine smile ever.
Andre Holmes
We'll see. Good night, my Goddess.
A good night kiss on the forehead was always an instant KO for Athena. After closing her door, I went back into my bed room, and dug under the bed for a suit case that was delivered two days ago to my front door. Popped open the suit case on top of the bed, and it revealed to be a written contract from Wrestling Championship Federation who wanted to sign me to the wrestling talent roster. I stared right at the contract, and my heart was racing faster than me sweating like crazy. My Pastor, and my daughter on my side again? Wow. I grabbed a pencil from the bed counter, and did what I knew what was the right thing to do. So, I signed it.
....I'm back.
