If someone asked you to think of a destructive element, most people would say ‘fire’. However, one element is overlooked in the process. Water is also a very powerful element, able to rush, flood and overpower within seconds in the right conditions. However, we’ll come to more on that later. At the moment, we are outside a small brick building in Perth city that looks to be one of the older buildings around. The sign outside reads ‘Dean/Jackson, P.I. Agency’. Standing outside the building are two individuals – Skyler Striker and his daughter Jade Striker. Skyler is dressed in the usual black and maroon, and Jade has street clothes on. Skyler has taken to throwing a yo-yo about recently, and is flinging it up and down as he stands, staring at the sing, contemplating things within his mind. Jade has Skyler’s trademark sunglasses on, but her smile is not present, as she is also confused at the moment. Skyler puts his hand on the door handle, but Jade pipes in before he can enter.
Jade: Father, are you sure you want to go through with this?
Skyler: I have to, Jade. It’s been too long. Eight years is too long.
Jade: Just making sure, father.
Skyler pushes the door open and enters the building. The inside is rather run-down, cobwebs hanging off places on the roof and small holes in the wall evident. The room is very small, with three chairs and another doorway, with a small doorbell button next to the door. Skyler pushes the bell and sits down, as Jade looks around the room. Eventually, the door opens, and a man aged around his late twenties steps through. He wears a set of striped black pants and a collared white shirt, and looks very modern for some reason. Skyler continues flicking his yo-yo as Jade speaks up.
Jade: You’ll be Dean or Jackson, I take it?
Dean: Rayford Dean, at your service. I’m presuming from the sound of your voice and the tone that you’re Jade Striker, and this man is your father Skyler, professional WCF wrestler?
Jade: Correct. Your advert was definitely accurate, then.
Dean: Feel free to step through.
Skyler stands, still flinging his yo-yo around and Jade follows. They both enter into a room adorned with a few certificates and newspaper headlines. The room is made out of the same red bricks and has only one window, which is tinted so that nothing is visible through it.
Jade: Are we being recorded here?
Dean: No. Everything said in this room is confidential.
Jade: And the one-way mirror?
Dean flicks a switch and the mirror dissolves, revealing an empty room next door, before returning the mirror to its usual state.
Jade: Good.
Dean: Now then, how can I help you?
Skyler: We’re looking for a woman. Went missing about eight years back and we haven’t seen her since.
Dean takes out a notebook from a drawer in his desk and begins taking notes.
Dean: Relation to you?
Skyler: Wife. She had Jade and then left a few weeks later.
Dean: Okay. Where was she born?
Skyler: California.
Dean: Have you had any contact with anyone in California recently?
Skyler: No.
Dean: And her name?
Skyler: Shaneyah Phoenix.
Dean: Okay. I’ll get a form for you to fill out her physical characteristics on in a minute, but I have to give you some information first. Firstly, being a private investigator means that we have to take extensive amounts of time to do these things. Back alleys can sometimes take weeks to navigate, so I can’t promise that I can find her for you within the month, or even the year. It always depends. Second, we don’t always find our targets. Some are hidden and stay hidden because they’re good at hiding. Are we clear?
Skyler nods, but interrupts before Dean can speak again. He still flings his yo-yo around and Jade watches the two men intently.
Skyler: Let me ask you something, Dean. How many people could ever survive a flood? A worldwide flood?
Dean: I’m not sure. Noah and his family would be the only examples I could think of.
Skyler: Good. You understand where I’m beginning to go, at least. Answer me this, then. If you have read or heard about Noah in the bible, presumably, then you will know that only one man was ever able to walk on water.
Dean: Jesus Christ.
Jade: Watch your language.
Skyler: Correct. Now then, another question – you will have no doubt got your research on me, my skills and weaknesses both in the ring and out as a part of your client search program, no?
Dean: Yes.
Skyler: Then you will know that only one man was ever able to truly know me inside and out as I am no doubt sure you do.
Dean: Danny “The Vagrant” Vice.
Skyler: Correct again. Now, I don’t want to compare myself to the Lord, by any means. However, the fact remains that none of the four men facing me at Slam actually know me well enough to beat me. One thinks he can offer his own challenge, when this is clearly my game. Another thinks that I’m nothing to be scared of, and once again, he’s in my arena – the hardcore arena. The other two haven’t even said anything yet. I will walk out having won my open challenge. Now, if I can defeat four men in one ring at the same time, then you can find one woman.
Dean: You’ve convinced me, Skyler. I’ll find your girl.
Skyler: Good, Ray. Can I call you Ray?
Dean: Sure.
The two exchange a handshake as Skyler grins, still flinging his yo-yo around.
Skyler: Now, if the Lord was the only one who could walk on water – tread the floods, if you will – is there any possibility that my opponents can?
Dean: No.
Skyler: I thought so. The most logical choice in your eyes would be the right one. I look forward to working with you, Ray.
Dean: And I with you, Skyler. Did you want a lollipop, Jade?
Jade delivers a look of almost pure hatred at Dean, as if he has just said the worst possible thing – which is nearly true.
Jade: Don’t patronise me, fool.
Skyler pushes Jade out the door and looks at Dean, who is half laughing, half scared. Dean hands him the form and Skyler fills it out before turning to leave. As he goes through the door, he speaks up briefly again.
Skyler: Good luck, Ray. You’ll need it to find her.
Skyler exits the room and Dean shakes his head as he reads through the form. The door closes and suddenly the bookcase in the room rotates on one corner to reveal a door, which another man enters through. The man is middle-aged, with greying hair, and a navy blue business suit on.
Jackson: He’s clean. But both of you are going to have to beat the hell out of everything you can to achieve your tasks.
Dean: It’s gonna be an interesting few weeks. That girl…
The two continue discussing Skyler and his task as the scene fades out.
