Denial is a basic human quality. There are many different types of denial, including those of impact, awareness and responsibility. However, it is a different type of denial which is the most common – denial of fact. This type of denial occurs when we know something but refuse to accept it, even though deep down we know it is true. Someone will usually lie to themselves in order to fully convince themselves that they are right and this will complete the denial, however it is also very harmful to the human psyche.
In this particular case, this type of denial is also very harmful to anyone else who is near this particular human psyche.
The scene today begins in a wooden building, relatively small – all it contains is a small shelter and a wrestling ring. Albeit its size, the room is very beautiful in its appearance – the light flows in through the side windows and Japanese runes are carved into certain pieces of wood throughout the building. It is the people in the building, however, that are our focus. The Striker family – Skyler, Jade and Katie – are all there, as well as Skyler’s training partners, Jayden Sarek and Dylan Ryder. Skyler is dressed in his ring gear today, a white set of pants along with black ring gloves. Katie is more relaxed, a pretty pink kimono adorning her small figure and Jade wears her street clothes as she examines the training Skyler closely. Dylan and Jayden both wear Lifeline shirts and black pants as they spar with the WCF World Champion.
Jade: Hurry it up, father! We have to get to the press conference!
Skyler, for some reason, avoids looking at Jade as he speaks.
Skyler: Don’t rush me, Jade. I’m watching the time.
Sweat runs down Skyler’s forehead as he grapples with Dylan. Dylan manages to gain advantage of Skyler and drop him hard with a backbreaker, and Skyler winces as he hits the mat. Dylan pauses and looks at Jayden, tagging him in and lifting Jayden by the feet for Jayden to hit a moonsault, but Skyler rolls out of the way quickly and puts his knee down firmly, which Jayden lands on and winds himself. Skyler grins and avoids a clothesline from Dylan before turning to hit a legsweep on Dylan to knock him over. With both his partners down, Skyler retreats to let them get back to their feet.
Dylan: You’re improving, Skyler. Regardless of what anyone says about you having no room to improve.
Jayden: But I think we need to handle a little hardcore match to ready you for Creeping Death.
Skyler nods and a trashcan full of weapons is thrown into the ring by Dylan, and they spill out on the mat. Dylan steps back and Jayden grabs a sledgehammer while Skyler picks up the trashcan itself.
Jade: Don’t injure him TOO bad, Jayden. My machines only have certain capabilities, I can’t recover broken bones in two days.
Jayden: You’ll still have your dad when I’m finished with him, Jade.
Jayden smiles and swings the hammer over his head, Skyler using the trashcan to defend himself. In a clever move, Skyler uses the trashcan to crumple around the head of the hammer and closes it before wrenching the hammer away from Jayden by pulling the trashcan and consequently the hammer’s head with it. Jayden looks surprised briefly before Skyler raises the trashcan over his head and brings the hammer’s handle down on Jayden, who falls to the mat in pain, cradling his head.
Katie: Yay dad!
Jade: Innovative.
Once again, Skyler does not turn his gaze from the ring.
Skyler: Thanks.
Dylan, from nowhere, surprises Skyler with a German suplex. Skyler hits the mat hard and Dylan waits for him to stand, thinking of a neckbreaker when Skyler turns, but an unfortunate series of events that are about to occur will render Dylan unable to complete the move – or to stay conscious.
As Skyler gets to one knee, his gaze is brought upon his two daughters on the side of the ring, both looking up at him in admiration and examination. However, the two only serve as a reminder of Skyler’s previous conversation with the voice and that the Striker family is going to fall apart soon. And it is this look that sets Skyler on a path that he only enters in moments of extreme anger.
Skyler: I WILL NOT LET US FALL APART!
Skyler turns and as Dylan goes for a neckbreaker, Skyler pushes Dylan away into the ropes and when he returns, Skyler hits a toe kick and grabs Dylan in pedigree position, jumping and hitting an inverted tombstone piledriver – right onto an unfortunately placed brick that fell from the trashcan. Dylan’s forehead connects with the brick and busts an old wound of Dylan’s open. This literally touches a bad nerve in Dylan and he falls unconscious, concussed. Jayden, getting to his feet, is brought down again with a HARD chair shot to the back of the head from Skyler, whose eyes blaze with anger and denial. Jayden collapses and tries to get up again but Skyler smashes him in the back, and then puts Jayden’s leg into the chair. Jade sees this rampage and stands, yelling at her father.
Jade: FATHER, NO!
Katie looks scared as Skyler ascends the top rope and jumps, nailing the Skyler High Dive onto the chair which shuts on Jayden’s knee and breaks a bone. Jayden screams in pain and Skyler kicks Jayden hard in the gut for good measure, which causes Jayden to cough up blood. Skyler grabs another steel chair and smashes it across Jayden’s head, and Jayden falls unconscious from the pain. Katie begins to cry and Jade shakes her head as she rushes into the ring and jumps onto her father’s back, cinching a particular nerve and causing Striker to fall asleep. Jade climbs off her father’s back and looks at the carnage in the training ring.
Jade: What the hell got into you, father?
Jade speaks to her sleeping father and shakes her head again, not knowing what causes Skyler to attack with such brutality and regardlessness. Jade goes back to her sister and hugs her, patting Katie on the back to stop her crying. Suddenly Jade turns, a noise coming from her sleeping father. Skyler looks to be talking in his sleep.
Skyler: I… will not… let us… fall… apart…
Skyler says nothing more as he lies on the mat. Jade grabs her mobile phone and calls the local hospital to come and pick up the three unconscious wrestlers. Jade shakes her head once more at the carnage and walks away, exiting the room through the door at the front and looking for the ambulance.
Katie Striker, on the other hand, goes to the ring apron, tears still rolling down her gentle face, and looks at her unconscious father, asking both herself and him a question.
Katie: Let what fall apart?
Katie rests her head on her father’s chest in the ring as the scene fades.
I told you denial was dangerous. For Skyler, it’s only the beginning of danger.
