Things aren’t always as they seem. Even the most obvious of things can have connotations that we never even think of. Misconceptions aren’t hard to make. Even the most trained minds can’t see everything at once. Only God can do that. So take, as an example, a golden belt. The WCF World Championship. To the eyes, it’s just a shiny lump of gold stuck onto a bit of leather. To the mind…
It’s so much more.
But just because it has a meaning behind the gold on the surface doesn’t mean that we should divert all our attentions to it. the human mind has always been attracted to gold. The gold of the WCF World Title attracts every single wrestler – from Creeping Death and Epic to Davey Boone and Rich Marciano to even Danny Vice and Mike Ragnal. There is not one wrestler in the WCF locker room who would not want a chance to take the belt off of its current holder. Not one. It’s elemental – gold attracts the eyes. And the symbolism behind the belt – to know that you are the best in the world at what you do – attracts the hearts behind the eyes.
Today’s scene begins in a local park somewhere in downtown Perth, Australia. The sky is blue, the sun is shining, the birds are quiet. It’s winter down here, we don’t get many birds. And on this surprisingly contradictory winter day, Skyler Striker has decided to take his daughters to the park to have fish and chips for lunch. Skyler, Jade and Katie sit on a picnic rug on the grass with a large order of fish and chips sitting before them. Katie is selecting which ones she wants carefully, Jade is eating a salad, and Skyler is being a typical male and grabbing handfuls before throwing them into his mouth. Jade looks into a small device in her hands while Katie and Skyler eat and eventually, Jade finds the time to put the book down.
SS: Anything interesting?
JS: Couple of mentions of you on the Opponent Surveillance System. TXO bragging about his Series match with you as per usual and Joe Ragnal is trying to get tips from Mike on how to beat you in your GWC match.
SS: Nothing from Holland, Epic or CD?
JS: Not as of yet. Holland has spoken, but he’s only talking to Ragnal, didn’t even mention you or Vice.
SS: Lovely. Means I don’t have to speak as much.
A brief gust of wind blows through the park and blows the three Striker’s hair everywhere. Skyler brushes his white fringe back into place, Jade ignores the wind, and Katie has short hair so the wind doesn’t even bother her careful choice to select a crunchy chip instead of a long skinny one.
SS: I don’t know, Jade. It all seems…
JS: What?
SS: Just too easy. It’s never been this simple. Never. I’ve always had a challenge in front of me to overcome and that’s what pushed me through my opponents. For Vice it was the whole inadequate thing, for War it was the personality troubles, and for Cairo it was you. But now… now it just seems as if there’s nothing. Just a wrestling challenge. I want something more, something to push me. This gold around my waist… it fits too well.
JS: I think, Father, that you may be overreacting to this whole situation. You have matches with two former WCF World Cha-
BANG.
Everything stops, and then disappears. And Striker is back in his least favourite place of all time – the white void. Nothing upways, sideways, longways or downways. Nothing. Just Skyler… and white.
But, of course, things are never this simple.
Because with the void… comes the voice.
This voice, however, is not like the one that has previously bugged Striker to no end. This voice is different, sounding to Skyler like a running stream crossed with trumpets sounding. And as it speaks to Skyler, he feels peaceful. It’s a hard feeling to describe.
??: A challenge, Striker? You want something more challenging?
SS: Damn straight. Who are you?
??: You don’t need to know.
SS: It’s always that way, isn’t it?
??: Almost. Alright, Skyler. You want a challenge, I’m going to give you a few. A couple of tasks to complete over the next few weeks.
SS: Go ahead.
??: You’ve got a few brutal matches coming up. CD, Epic, and a few other names that I won’t mention because it would alter the course of events. Through all of this, I want you, Skyler, to display love. In whatever way you can. You have to show CD that you trust him. You have to show him that you respect him. You have to show Katie, Jade and your mother that you are their protector. You have to show Seth that you appreciate what he’s done, and you have to show Index Three that you believe and trust in them as your true friends. You even have to show Epic that you know he’s another human being and show unconditional love.
Silence.
SS: You’re kidding, right?
??: Believe what you want, Skyler. It’s more of a challenge than you think. See if you can bring yourself up to my standards. No-one in history has done it before.
More silence as Striker contemplates who would offer what seems like such a ridiculous challenge.
SS: I don’t know who you are, but you’re on. Watch me.
??: That’s the Skyler that I know and love. Go, enjoy your time with Katie and Jade, Skyler. I will talk with you again.
The white void fades and Skyler returns to the real world.
JS: -mpions and you have to show them that you’re not letting go of what you’ve got.
Skyler takes a minute to catch his breath and looks at Jade with a smile on his face.
SS: On the contrary, Jade – I need to give everyone a piece of what I’ve got.
Jade shrugs and returns to her handheld computer as Katie finally starts eating her chips.
She has selected three.
Skyler looks into the sky as the scene fades.
And with a challenge to love, what better to draw hearts near than a big, shiny piece of gold such as the WCF World Championship.
It’s so much more.
