Purity. The one thing that evades us so very often. Not everyone desires it – some prefer to live without it, some prefer to avoid and abhor it as if it were evil. But that’s the inside joke, isn’t it? Everyone, when they think of purity, would naturally come to the conclusion of white, symbolic elements, the dove, and angels. But who said that to be pure, something had to involve love? Just because you’re pure of heart doesn’t mean you’re purely good. Purity can shift entirely the other way. For every white… there is a black.
The scene begins today in an entirely white void. There is nothing. Absolutely nothing. No surroundings, no scenery, no people, nothing. There is no sound, or movement, or time, or even space. There is nothing.
And then, from nowhere, Skyler Striker pops into existence.
Skyler, albeit the fact that he has just popped into a seemingly impossibly dimension out of nowhere, seems relatively normal – or as normal as you get in the case of Skyler Striker. He wears a set of black jeans and his black Ace of Hearts shirt, as well as a black scarf and some black fingerless gloves. The only things that seem to differ in colour are Skyler’s hair, which is almost a pure white with all the blonde dye, and his eyes, which flame red. Unfortunately, Skyler is faced with a problem – which is the inescapable void he has just been placed in. Skyler looks around and examines his black clothes, which all of a sudden flicker – everything changes to white except for the heart logo which was white before, but that now changes to black briefly before his clothes turn back to normal. They flicker once or twice more and eventually they just keep flickering between the black heart and the white heart. Skyler ignores this and walks around, although does not get anywhere, as there is nowhere to head towards. From nowhere, a voice appears behind Striker.
JS: Miss me, father?
Skyler turns around but there is no-one there. The voice reappears behind him again.
JS: I’m sure you don’t. After all, you’re the WCF World Champion! You surely don’t need a silly little girl like me.
Skyler tries to catch the person behind the voice but as he turns they are gone again. This time the voice appears above Skyler.
JS: And now, of course, you’ve got that other little girl to keep you company.
Skyler looks up but the voice goes below.
JS: So I guess I’ll just disappear forever.
Skyler finally looks around and catches his daughter, Jade Striker, standing ten metres away from him. She is dressed in a white dress and a shining silver tiara, a nine-year-old princess. She turns her back to him and he runs forward to her, but as he reaches out to hold her, his hands go right through her. Jade turns back to him with a sharp movement and although Skyler cannot touch her, it appears she can touch him, and Jade grabs Skyler’s shirt, which is still flickering. She examines the black and white flickering heart symbol on his shirt as Skyler simply kneels, unable to do anything. Jade shakes her head and releases Skyler.
JS: Typical. Always having a change of heart. When you decide that I’m important again, make sure to come and get me. Óáò äåßôå ãýñù, ðáôÝñáò.
Skyler looks at his daughter, who has just spoken in Greek, and watches her disappear just as quickly as he appeared in the void. Skyler’s shirt suddenly stops flickering, but it has stopped on the black-hearted version of the outfit. And then, from nowhere, another voice appears – one that sounds distantly familiar to Skyler.
??: Skyler? Skyler! Wake up, Sky! Wake up!
The clock reads 9:16 as Skyler sits up in his hospital bed and takes a look around him. Skyler is covered in a few blankets and it looks as if his head has been bandaged. Skyler is in a private room with only one bed, and he has two visitors. Standing by his side is Katie Striker, his adopted daughter, looking nervous. However, standing behind Katie is the voice Skyler has just heard – and a face that Skyler also recognises but has not seen in almost twelve years, and also the only person ever to call him ‘Sky’ and get away without a nosebleed.
Standing by his side, as he did to her when he was just a child, is Angela Striker – Skyler’s mother.
Skyler looks at her in disbelief and rubs his eyes as his mother embraces him, and a tear rolls down Skyler’s cheek. The two stay embracing and finally Mrs. Striker lets Skyler go. Skyler looks her up and down quickly – his mother is fifty-two years old by now. She looks remarkably fit and well-off for a fifty-year old and is holding Katie by the shoulders as Katie looks inquisitively at Skyler, as if to see if he is alright. Skyler suddenly remembers his dream and looks for a phone.
AS: Sky – what are you looking for?
SS: Jade – she doesn’t know, I have to call-
KS: Jade’s okay, daddy. Mr. Vice rang the hospital after they carried you out because the Egyptian man attacked you. He said to tell you that Jade is okay and will be staying at his house for a while, and that she sends her condo.. condol.. condolesces?
AS: She means condolences, Sky.
KS: Yeah, that word. The doctor also said he’d be back.
Skyler smiles weakly at his daughter, who has nothing but love in her eyes.
SS: Thanks, Katie.
The doctor walks into the room and nods to Angela and Katie before turning to Skyler, clipboard in hand and a pen at the ready.
TA: Hello, Skyler. My name is Timothy Adams. I’ve been looking after you the past two days.
SS: Two days? I’ve been out that long?
TA: Unfortunately, yes. That shot to the head with a chair from Cairo after that horrible glass match… I was watching it on the television. When I heard about it I knew I’d end up with either you or Thunder in one of my hospital beds.
SS: You own the hospital?
TA: Sort of. I look after a lot of pro wrestlers like yourself – although only one other ever came in as bad as you.
SS: Who?
TA: Went by the name of Daniel Vice. Somewhere around January, I believe you knew him.
SS: A little too well at that point in time. I-
Skyler coughs harshly a few times and rubs his bandaged head.
SS: Anyway. What’s my situation?
TA: Well, knowing that you’re a professional wrestler – and that you managed to survive that horrible Pyramid match with Thunder not two days ago – I’ve given you approval to wrestle this Sunday. A message came from a Mr. Lerch telling you that you’ll be facing Jay Williams in the next match of the series. He also said that he has accepted your official application for a stable and that Index Three is now copyrighted to you, Danny Vice and Mike Ragnal.
SS: Thanks, Doc.
TA: Well, I still have other patients to attend to, so I must be off. I’ll be back to check you out in a couple of hours, and if that goes well, you’ll be released.
Doctor Adams walks away and Skyler lies back on his propped up pillows.
AS: So, Sky. We have a lot to catch up on. World Champion, I hear!
SS: Mom, I know this is the first time we’ve seen each other in a few years, but can you give me half an hour alone in the room? I just need some time to think.
Angela looks confused but she nods, and takes Katie with her as she walks away and closes the door. Skyler closes his eyes but does not go to sleep, simply trying to take a moment and regroup, both all the news he has received and the beatings taken from Cairo and Thunder still taking their tool on him. Unfortunately, Skyler’s imagination is haunting him, and all he can see is Danny and Jimmy Vice playing happily with Katie in a playground somewhere. Skyler opens his eyes, and their red flame is returning once more.
SS: Godamnit, Vice.
Purity… pure friendship, pure love, pure hatred. They all have purity in common. Very, very different things, but still alike in one way. But impurity… well, think of it as white flickering to black.
