Making mistakes is an essential part of human life – we all do it. No-one is perfect. Everyone falters, everyone hesitates, everyone falls. But that’s what makes us human, isn’t it? That’s why we’re so natural, so different. We all make mistakes, but the mistakes we make compared to the mistakes that others make are what define us. One person who forgets to pick their child up from school is different to another that attacks someone on a street. Regardless of which mistakes we make, however, we all need to be forgiven for them. We all want to be rid of these mistakes, even though we can’t erase the fact we’ve made them. And there’s the other way of defining yourself – how you go about trying to find why you made the mistake – and how you can be forgiven.
The scene begins today in the darkness of Skyler Striker’s hospital room. Doctor Adams has recommended that Skyler stay an extra night in the hospital to give him a better chance at recovery towards the match with Jay Williams on the weekend, and Skyler, persuaded by his loving mother and daughter, has reluctantly agreed. Katie and Angela have both headed back to Skyler’s house and Doctor Adams has gone home for the night, and Skyler, without a television or an iPod, is simply laying back, doing nothing. His red eyes are dulled as they stare forward and his hair, which has obviously not been cut in a while, is dishevelled. While there is a lack of any serious technology, a radio system blurts out advertisements from a corner of the room. Finally some music comes on and Skyler recognises the tune as “The Scientist” by Coldplay. And then Skyler breaks down into tears. Skyler sobs quietly from his bed as the melancholy music persists, only seeking to remind Skyler of the loss of his daughter and his lack of compassion for her previously. We zoom out of this scene as another fades in.
This time the scene fades into Katie Striker listening to the same song in her room. Katie is also crying, tears rolling down her cheeks and onto her nice white dress as she sits on her bed. However, these tears have nothing to do with hurting Jade, instead they are tears of loneliness and separation from the two people she truly loves, her father and her sister. Katie stares out through her open window into the night sky as a light breeze blows through onto her through the second floor window. Angela Striker is asleep in the guest room, otherwise Katie would be long asleep. Instead Katie prefers simply to listen to the song as she watches the stars. There is a sudden rustling in the tree outside that stirs Katie from her tear-filled dreams and she looks out the window to see her sister, Jade Striker, climbing through the window. Katie turns the music down and looks at her sister carefully – Jade looks to have a large scratch on her left arm. Katie ignores this and hugs her sister, although Jade is reluctant.
JS: Hello, sister. You look sad.
KS: Because I miss you! And because daddy is sad.
JS: How is he?
KS: He misses you as well, you know. You don’t need to be so harsh towards him. He’s almost like a child in some respects. Você sabe que ele é pesaroso, por que você não o perdoará?
Jade looks momentarily shocked at her sister’s sudden show of intelligence through another language – but she replies in turn all the same.
JS: Como você aprendeu Portugese?
KS: Vem com o heritage, cara irmã. Responda agora a minha pergunta, você não têm toda a noite.
JS: I can’t forgive him… yet. He still needs to learn. When he beats Jay Williams this week at Slam – that’s when I plan on returning.
KS: Don’t wait forever, sister. He needs you back. He thinks he’s done something wrong – and he’s starting to suspect Vice. Oh, and what if Williams manages to beat dad this week?
JS: Father never underestimates his opponents. This is the WCF Series – it’s given him fresh motivation to prove that he’s worthy of holding that title. And Jay Williams may be a tough tag champion, but face it, Katie – he’s no Skyler Striker. I don’t know what dad thinks of Jay, but I know that Father is the most persistent idiot around here. So much so to the extent that he’ll literally nearly kill himself to make sure he wins or achieves his goal. And knowing father, he’ll have only one goal on his mind. And that will be to make Jay Williams tap out or pass out to the Lockdown. Jay won’t take this match lightly – but he still doesn’t know what he’s in for.
The sound of footsteps in the hall make it through to Katie’s room and Jade looks at her sister and hugs her close before stepping back and climbing back out of the window.
JS: Mantenha-o cofre, irmã.
Jade disappears back into the street and Katie closes the window and jumps under the sheets, flicking off her light. Angela Striker opens the door and looks down at Katie, who to all appearances looks as if she has been asleep for hours. Angela smiles the smile only a mother can and closes the door again as Katie grins, knowing that soon everything should fall into place.
In the hospital, Skyler Striker thinks to himself. The room is still silent except for the sound of the radio playing “The Scientist” and the only light is coming from the moon and reflecting off of Skyler’s World Championship belt which sits on a table next to him. Skyler’s mind is racing as he thinks of his challenge at Slam.
So, Jay Williams. Tag Team Champion. History with Reckless Jack. Got his first belt within a few months of being here. Skilled in the ring, tough outside of it. This is going to be a challenge. But I’m Skyler Striker, and damnit, I will not give up. I can’t lose. I won’t lose. I have to win.
For Jade.
No one forgives with more grace and love than a child.
