Act 1: Love or Titles?
"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage."
Lao Tzu
"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage."
Lao Tzu
The scene opens on the Staples Center in L.A. The night was dark and filled with low clouds threatening rain. The lights of the city shine against the darkness, and the stars are hidden behind the clouds, while the moon tries to peak it's face out from behind. The arena was still quiet except for the stage hands that were still getting everything ready for Sunday night. They moved in and out without ever seeing the lone figure that stood on the roof staring down at them. The camera focuses in and we see Denise staring out over the city and watching the final preparations for the show. The sound of thunder rumbles through the night sky, and flashes of lightening begin. Rain starts to fall and Denise pulls up the collar on her jacket. Her long hair framed her face as her steel blue eyes stared out at the city.
Denise: Just one more night before it all happens. I'm still torn up about what to do, but what does it matter? I know he's in the same boat as I am right now, and both of us would be happy if the other wins the title, but how can I face him now? Both of us want the title, I want to retain my title and he wants to take it from me, and the fight that will ensue is one that isn't going to be pleasant for either one of us.
The rain starts to come down a bit harder, but it doesn't seem to bother Denise. Her long hair danced a little bit in the wind that had picked up and moved over the city.
Denise: I know that you love me Night Rider, and that you would be happy if I keep the title around my waist. Bu that doesn't change the fact that I don't want to hurt you. This match was made in bad taste, but then again we both knew that one day we would have to face each other no matter what we did anyway. It was just a matter of time. You know that I'm not going to hold anything back and I know you won't either to get what we want.
The rain was starting to pour a bit harder, and the storm had finally started to rage. The rain suddenly stops and there was an umbrella over head. She turns and there stood Sam. She smiles softly as Denise looks at her with slick hair and tears streaming down her face. Sam wraps an arm around her shoulders and the two of them head down the stairs and into the now quiet arena.
Denise: What are you doing here?
Sam: I came to see you. I figured you could use someone to talk to.
Denise: I don't really feel like talking Sam.
Sam: Don't be silly. You could always talk to me about stuff like this. What's changed?
Denise: Nothing... I guess. It's just...
Sam: What? It's because it's Night Rider isn't it? You know no matter what happens he's going to still love you in the end right?
Denise: I know but I'm going to have to put him through hell and back Sam. I mean I've never held back on anyone that I've faced and I'm not going to start now. It's not even about the title anymore... I just don't want to hurt him.
Sam: You know it's something that either one of you can help at the moment. He's not going to hold back either. I mean your title is on the line after all. Do you think he's just going to let you hold onto that title?
Denise: Of course not. I know that he's going to do whatever has to be done, and yes it'll kill him inside, but I know he'll do it.
Sam: And you will too. Both of you have pride that runs a mile wide if not more and don't want to see the other get hurt or disappointed.
Denise: So what do I do?
They start down the long flight of stairs that would lead them down to the main floor of the arena.
Sam: You go out there and do whatever you have to do. Either way nothing will break you two apart. You know if he wins the title you'll be happy, and if you win he'll be happy for you. Don't think about it so much.
Denise: It's hard not to. I just want to get back to my hotel room and get some rest.
Sam: You can't be serious... I mean we are in one of the best cities for parties and yet all you want to do is go and sleep?
Denise: Yes. I want to be ready for tomorrow night. Is that wrong?
Sam: No but you really should get out and relax before your match. C'mon I'll take you back to your hotel and get changed so we can go.
Denise: Fine. I guess a night out will do me some good.
Sam: Good. Now come on. The night is still young and so are we.
For the first time in a week Denise cracks a smile as they reach the bottom of the stairs, and head out into the night, as the scene fades to black.
