Mack is flinging her jacket onto her shoulders. In her hand are keys to a truck she just purchased used. She sticks them in her mouth as she struggles with the jacket's zipper. There's a knock on the door and she answers and it's Steele. His hair is lightly dusted with snow as is the shoulders of his jacket. He looks up at her and gives a curious glance at the keys in her mouth. He starts laughing.
"Whap?"
Then as she tries to speak the keys fumble from her lips causing a rather large thud on the ceramic floor of her new Wisconsin apartment causing her to look annoyed only more at herself.
"Where are you off too? Thought we had a date?"
"I'm really sorry, I was going to call you before your flight but it had already left. I'm equally sorry I wasn't there when you got off. This thing with Chels and Shelley has my mind in a million shattered pieces. I feel so helpless, I can't do anything really and Stacy and Matt are taking turns calling me. I moved in this weekend and I'd lose the lease if I wasn't here. I feel like a horrible friend. I was actually heading out to see if I could get a late flight or something."
Steele can obviously tell that she's stressed out so he starts pushing her back toward the love seat.
"Mack, you need to de-stress. First off, did you see the weather out there? Second, you will not be any good to them like this. Not that I don't think they don't want you there but I'm sure they have things under control right now. If anything changes by morning you know SOMEONE will get you on the phone. No sense adding your imminent survival on a plane trip to their worry right?
Mack bites the inside of her cheek and reluctantly nods her head. Steele offers a crooked smile and starts to peel the jacket from her arms and torso. He then grabs the remote of her ancient TV and starts flipping channels, one arm causally draped across the back of the couch, for a few minutes the only sound is coming from the television. A Christmas movie, Steele starts to lean in closer, Mack seems completely oblivious. He leans in a little farther, licking his dry lips at the sight of Mack’s plump pink ones. She starts turning, he's about to make his move when she frowns.
"Do you think Jason and I have this again this week? I mean we seem to be really making an impact as a team...”
Steele takes a deep silent breath.
"Honey, you know I think you are one of the best…Jason seems like a decent guy and he's not going to let you down."
Satisfied with his answer she turns back to the screen. Steele skips his previous build up to go right back to his former position.
"I just think that this is some trick or something. That Twilight is setting me up to fail, I don't know, I guess he just seems arrogant enough to line himself up with her because he thinks I'm beneath him and because of my friendship and Trinity...”
Steele runs a hand through his still wet hair and leans back against the arm of the couch to appraise her. She's still looking at the screen until she realizes he's not right next to her. She looks; her eyebrows go up in confusion.
"Why in Sam Hill are you over there?"
He rolls his eyes and deposits himself next to her again
"I don't think you are big enough yet that Sarah will even sneeze in your direction. No offense or anything but Jason is just as new as you too...good skills or not…stop stressing!"
He watches her a few minutes, seeing how expressive she is when different situations arise in the movie. He doesn't even know what movie it is; he's too busy studying her face. He decides nothing is going to stop him from kissing her this time. He'd been almost obsessive over the thought since the hockey game but the right moment hadn't come. So far he'd had two in the few minutes that she'd inadvertently cock blocked. She starts to turn again and he can see that she's about to say something else about the fed. He takes his opportunity and with a hand on each side of her face, he cuts her off mid start. She still has her eyes open and a finger raised to make a point but as he deepens the kiss her hand drops and tangles into the hair at the base of his neck and her eyes flutter shut. He probes her mouth open and then she suddenly pulls back, a hand goes to her mouth.
"Excuse me…"
She squeaks and half runs to the bathroom and the door locks with the sound of metal on wood. Steele quickly makes his way over to the bathroom door and knocks on it a few times.
“Mack, is everything okay? Did I do something wrong?”
She opens the door a crack and peers out at him timidly.
"No. You didn't do anything wrong. I'm just... really new to this thing. Being embarrassed is not an emotion I convey gracefully"
Steele gives her a re-assuring smile.
"That's perfectly normal, don't worry about it...if you're not ready, I'm not going to force you into something you don't want to do. Being with you makes me feel alive again, I don't want this to end because I was moving too fast for you."
Mack opens the door all the way
"Its not that I'm not ready its more that I'm pretty sure you will back off if you knew how little relationship experience I really had. Its not that I never had offers for dates. I did go out with some guys but it always became quickly apparent that I wasn't girly enough for them. I just concerned myself more with school. It didnt really start bothering me until I finished my last course last month. Then the offer for wcf came in. Everything has been a whirlwind."
Steele takes both of Mack's hands in his and looks straight into her eyes.
"Mack, the reason why I fell for you to begin with was because of the fact you aren't the typical girly girl. You're the first woman I've met that actually likes hockey for cryin' out loud..."
She gives him a shy smile
"Just kinda pathetic saying I've never had a relationship at 23 years old."
"It's not pathetic at all, matter of fact, it makes me feel more attracted to you..."
She punches him in the arm
"Of course... what was I thinking... what guy wouldn't want a first timer. Isnt there some kind of unspoken contest about if you can land a girl still with her V card?"
She narrows her eyes but there is a tell tale smirk on her lips
"How dare you assume that? I am offended by that remark Miss Cooper!"
The two of them laugh a little and Steele puts his arms around Mack's waist.
"Mack...I think I..."
Steele then shakes his head, letting out a deep sigh before removing his arms from around her waist, turning around and facing away from, shaking his head some more, under his breath he mutters.
"You're an idiot Steele! It's only been a few fucking weeks...now you're going to scare her off...congratulations!"
"Sorry? I didn't catch that?"
She walks up beside him. He lifts his head, finding her easy smile contagious.
"I want to tell you something, but considering how we've only been dating for a few short weeks, I don't know if it's the right time to tell you, and I don't want to scare you off by saying it..."
Mack chews the inside of her cheek
"It won't scare me off but I don't want you to say it before I can reciprocate. Its not fair to you. "
She puts a hand on his cheek.
"This is the longest a guy has stuck around so we don't have to rush anything in the L word department. I will tell you though. I care a lot about you and I want to see where that goes. "
She takes his hand and pulls him back to the love seat
"If you really want to show how much you care... go make sure George knows he's messing with your girl "
She gives him a wink
"He's still giving you trouble? When will that guy quit...seriously it's getting ridiculous. It's beyond harassment by now, surely."
Mack shakes her head, settling into the love seat once again.
"In the real world.. yes. I'd have grounds for restraining order but realistically I can't do that. But that doesn't meant that anybody that doesn't like it can't take a piece out of him for it. Matt go really pissed off at him the other day but this guy is so dense that doesn't seem like anything is getting through to him."
Steele wraps his arm around her.
"Well then, I guess somebody needs to do more than just tell him to stop. Good job I'm going to be at Slam again this week...but anyway...I want you to forget about everything and just relax."
Steele then slowly moves towards her and gives her a deep passionate kiss before softly kissing her all the way down her neck.
Mack smiles
"I'm sure you will do a very good job at helping me to forget all about him...won't you..."
The scene slowly fades out as the two disappear into the couch cushions
