Gimmick:
Wrestling is basically all Corey Black knows. He began training at age 17, debuted at age 18, and hasn't looked back ever since. His homelife wasn't great. It never is for professional wrestlers, is it? After witnessing the death of his brother and sister at the hands of his father at a very young age, it is believed 'Creeping Death' came out for the very first time, and when Corey came back to, a baseball bat had been swung at his fahter's head. A lot. Self defense was the judgement, all things considered. Corey then lived with his mother, who remarried. His step-father wasn't that great of character either, forcing Corey to use the name "James Volz," his own last name and a pretend first name, probably to hide Corey's past. A car accident, a loss of a mother, and a directionless boy wandered into a pro wrestling school in Des Moines, Iowa. Corey's trainer, 'The Crow,' witnessed 'Creeping Death' first hand in the ring one day, and gave the rage a face in the form of a white base and black circles around the eyes, then four black lines over the mouth. Corey was a standout, committing his entire waking life to training.
Corey Black has become THE name in WCF history. His legendary career is widely documented, and he's not afraid to put people in their place, either with words or Burning Hammers. During 2012, Corey Black worked hard to create a weapon out of his elbow, and he has succeeded in this mission. Through 2013, Creeping Death manifested once again and took over, the more violent version of Corey Black reared its head and wrecked house.
Corey Black's elbow had been the target of an attack, requiring major reconstruction surgery. The elbow, which is Corey's main weapon, is now mostly made of metal.
Various other points of character development are the ongoing Pantheon stable commitment. Be it reforming or disbanding, either way, it's a way to make plenty of enemies.
Corey successfully embarked on his 'retirement tour' heading toward One 2017.
In early-mid 2018, Corey Black assumed ownership of WCF.
On January 7th at One 2019, Corey suffered a brutal assault on his right eye in a match with Wade Moor. As a result, he wears a golden plate over his right eye. Duration of the requiring of said plate is unknown.
Corey is considered one of the best-rounded wrestlers in the company. 16+ years of experience, 15+ in WCF alone. He has trained in Mexico, Canada and Japan, taking the best of each individual style and creating his own all-encompassing style, sort of like what Bruce Lee did with Jeet Kune Do. This is explained more under "Style."
Height/weight:
5'9'' - 223lbs
Date of Birth
June 6th, 1983
Hometown:
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Alignment (Face/heel/neutral):
Neutral leaning whatever the fuck he feels like that day (I say neutral because Corey Black has progressed into that zone where realistically no matter what happens, he has fans. He could Burning Hammer a puppy and people would cheer because it's Corey Black delivering a Burning Hammer.)
Appearance/attire:
The first thing people would notice about Corey Black is his hair and beard. MIddle/long stringy black hair to his shoulders, super long full beard. If he was bigger, he'd be cast in the TV show Vikings. He has decent muscle tone. He has two piercings; one in his left eyebrow with a spike, and the right side of his lower lip with a hoop. CD's left arm is a full sleeve of tattoos, featuring skulls, spider webs, pumpkins, monsters like vampires, werewolves, zombies and most things Halloween. Corey's chest is adorned with a tattoo as well, Old Norse knotwork style designs. This same motif is on his back and right arm as well. His back is the head and chest of a helmed Viking warrior, but filled in with Norse runes. Nearly all of Corey's upper body is tattooed, only his stomach is not. On his right thigh, there's a silhouette of Frankenstein's Monster. CD has a scar of a row horizontal lines on the right side of his body on his ribcage from a weed whacker.
Corey's wrestling attire consists of royal blue bicycle type short tights, adorned with a white stylized skull on the front wearing a spiked golden crown. White boots, royal blue kickpads, golden trim. Royal blue knee and elbow pads, white wrist/hand tape.
Entrance (Specify music):
"All Out Life" by Slipknot hits the PA as the lights drop and purple lights illuminate the arena. A few moments later Corey Black emerges from the backstage area wearing a worn looking black leather vest with "ALL HAIL" - a skull with a crown - and "THE KING" on the back of it. The crowd cheers along with great appreciation as Corey makes his way to the ring, little interaction with anyone, just focused on the squared circle. Black slides into the ring and lifts his right elbow to the sky as most of the crowd loses their mind. Corey drops his vest to the floor and simply waits in the corner, bouncing back and forth, anticipating the coming battle.
Style:
CD does it all. At the day's end, he'll rely on his high flying, high-impact moves and striking (long stays in Japan) styles the most, but he's well known as a fantastic technician (training with Rick Mad) and hardcore wrestler as well. Not afraid of anything at all, no risk nor object nor man will hinder CD. The moves listed below are just a sample of the wide variety of moves Corey Black uses, it's almost impossible to list them all, Corey's ability to innovate new moves has always garnered the ire of opponents that attempt to scout him. Because if his ability to adapt, he has many moves that could potentially end a match. A 'signature move' is a lost idea on Corey Black, he has his moves that he knows will put someone away like the Burning Hammer or Phoenix Splash, but his technique is so advanced that a Brainbuster or knee strike will be able to put a man down for three.
Common Match Tactics:
- Will flip out of moves and land in the "superhero landing pose" to annoy opponents, making them charge in and get caught with a counter move.
- Delivers strikes to the back of the head, seated, or kneeling opponent in an attempt to end a match.
- Commonly does moves into the turnbuckle. Suplexes, powerbombs, slams, etc.
- Strings moves together to end a match. Superkick, superkick, discus lariat is a common combo but anything and everything is possible. Triple rolling brainbusters? Sure. Of course.
- Flash roll-ups are not an uncommon occurrence.
- Sometimes kicks out at 1 after a big move late in the match.
- Does moves onto the apron either for more damage or as a punctuation.
- Very good at creative reversals.
- Rarely showboats, usually does moves quickly and with purpose.
- Not the best at submissions, but can maneuver out of most due to years of training.
- Doesn't spend much time outside the ring when a countout is in effect. Will dive onto opponents, but doesn't waste time brawling.
- Utilizes various colors of the "Asian Mist" as a last resort tactic if the opponent will not go down.
Commonly Used Moves:
Strikes: Elbow strikes (to head, face, chest, knees, legs, arms etc), knee strikes (same), most kicks (super, roundhouse, drop, front, side, spinning, heel, big boot, Yakuza Kick etc)
Grapples: Suplexes (t-bone, gargoyle, vertical, exploder, german, half nelson, tiger, dragon etc), DDTs (normal, jumping, running, Asai etc), Slams (body, side, spike uranage, STO, etc), Neckbreakers (sitdown, spinning, Stunner, Cutter), Bombs (normal, sitout, kneeling, crucifix etc)
Running: Yakuza Kick, Busaiku Knee Strike, Dropkick, Clotheslines (normal, flip, leaping etc), spear, leaping double stomp (CD will either run at or catch a running opponent in the chest/head with both feet and forcefully stomp them down to the mat. Requires CD to leap high and bring his knees up to get the kind of height needed)
Aerial: Elbow drop, leg drop, moonsault, springboard variations (from middle rope, top rope, outside to top to inside, etc) Splashes (normal, twisting, 360, shooting star) Sentons (back, flip), Double Stomp (normal, moonsault to, front flip to)
Corner: Tornado DDT, running Yakuza Kick, running dropkick, middle/top rope versions of other moves listed
Submission: Dragon Sleeper, Triangle Choke, Single Leg Boston Crab, Cross Arm Breaker
Special Moves:
Brainbuster, Fisherman Brainbuster, Backdrop Driver, Lariat, Reverse Rana, Superkick, Falcon Arrow,, Death Valley Driver, Van Daminator/Terminator, Kudome Valentine (Vertebreaker), Shining Wizard, Strong Style Knee Strike (BomaYe/Kinshasa/V-Trigger type of strike), Penalty Kick (running punt type kick to the head/chest of a seated opponent), Frog Splash, 450 Splash, Shooting Star Press
"Taking the King's Ransom" - Corey will pick the opponent up onto his shoulder and clutch their head behind his back in an Air Raid Crash/White Noise/Belly to Back Piledriver hold. From here, he'll pull their head forward and drop to one knee, dropping the opponent neck/head first onto his leg while being held upside down.
(usually used against opponents he cannot lift) CD takes the opponent and applies a front face lock. He then front flips over the opponent in a move resembling a Northern Lights Suplex by his opponent, but instead CD delvers a front flip DDT. Depending on the momentum he gets while jumping, the opponent will either spike ridiculously awkward or backflip over and get dominated.
With the opponent laying on the mat, Corey runs toward the ropes and leaps up to the middle rope like he was going for a Lionsault. Instead, he springs backward while rotating forward, executing a springboard imploding 450 Splash to the opponent.
From the apron, Corey will leap over the top rope, and land on the middle rope, springing into the ring with a move. Usually a knee strike, but can be basically anything.
Finishing Move:
"For Victory or Death" - Repeated elbow strikes to the side of the opponent’s head while holding the opponent in a modified seated abdominal stretch. Either KO or submission.
"The Royal Beheading" - Corey maneuvers the opponent to a position where they are on one knee, "bent knee before the king" if you will, usually done with a superkick to the knee. From here Corey will charge in, be it a couple steps or bouncing off the ropes, coming in at the rear of the opponent with a swinging elbow strike to the back of their head. Absolutely devastating move.
Super Finishers:
Phoenix Splash
"Cry of the Black Birds" - With the opponent standing in the corner, Corey hops to the middle rope and bends over, hooking them in a suplex. From here, Corey lifts them up to the suplex position and flips them into a bomb while leaping forward, hitting a middle rope Orange Crush Bomb.

Subsection: Creeping Death
Once considered simply the persona of Corey Black, it was five powerbombs from Odin Balfore that forced Corey to put the facepaint and 'extreme' style away. Creeping Death was no more, Corey Black emerged. However, it isn't that simple. See, Creeping Death isn't just facepaint and black clothes. Corey Black claims there is an internal struggle to keep Creeping Death away from the forefront. In a very rare scenario, Corey will indeed step back, and once Creeping Death comes out, it is a whole new ballgame. The viciousness picks up. Brutal weapons are preferred. When Creeping Death first started to attempt to take over, it was a horror movie every day of Corey's life. Things would move, fly across the room, and overall just be terrible.
Recently, Creeping Death broke free from the place it dwelled and waged war upon the world as we know it. It has been taken from Corey Black's body, and relocated within another host - WCF wrestler Kevin Bishop.

Subsection: Frost
Frost was a student at the school in Iowa. He would go off to mainly compete in Japan, but Corey would use his name, mask, and gimmick to hide his own in WCF. This angered Frost, and with the help of Corey's ex-girlfriend, Frost would make his way to WCF to battle Corey for the pride of the mask and gimmick bestowed upon him by 'The Crow.' Frost and Corey both view the name and look a gift, and for Corey to use Frost's was a sin against their trainer and foundation.

Subsection: Nikki Venus
The former overseer of Global Wrestling Coalition, a 'sister fed' to WCF, Nikki ended up coming to WCF with Corey Black once GWC closed down. Once Corey's girlfriend, Nikki was pushed away by Creeping Death. She is a central force within Corey's life, being the one person in his life that's been around for an extended period of time and not stabbed him in the back. Nikki Venus is Corey Black's most trusted ally. She seems to be the key to unleashing Creeping Death upon the world.

Subsection: Taylor Swift
What is there to really say? WCF and Corey Black caught the eye of Swift at a charity event, and it seemed like Corey was bound to be her next hit single. She's appeared at XIII as ring announcer, but the relationship between the two seems to be successfully kept under wraps. Is it business? Is it romantic? Does it even exist? She's very much against Creeping Death, and does all she can to keep Corey Black grounded - while still being a multi-platinum selling singer.

Former Moves/Finishers Picked Up Along the Way:
(These are variant moves of important wrestlers in Corey's career, be it partner or opponent - very rarely used)
"Blackened MadPlex" - CD positions the opponent on the top rope and climbs up after them into a superplex hold. CD lifts the opponent up, but instead of falling backward, CD spins and sits out with a super Falcon Arrow, an homage to Rick Mad, former tag team partner and half trainer.
"Blackened Torture's Device" - A reverse suplex, but before the apex, Corey will spin around the drop the opponent in a cutter. Sort of an elevated Cross Rhodes. A variation of the move used by Torture.
"Blackened Flyswatter" - Corey will fly off the top rope and spin around in a barrel roll before landing with a headbutt to the opponent. An homage to "The Flyswatter" used by Jonny Fly.
"Blackened Downfall" - A fireman's carry hold, thrown around into a TKO type of move except before hitting the mat, Corey will lock the opponent in a Cravate. Jayson Price uses the Downfall.
"Blackened Connector" - Corey Black's Blackened Connector is a very effective maneuver. Performed from a springboard base (be it from the apron, from the middle rope with a spin, whatever), Corey will catch the opponent from behind in a sleeper and flip over their shoulder landing and snapping their neck violently forward.
"For Whom the Bell Tolls" - CD positions the opponent in a Pedigree, lifts them up so they are laying on CD's shoulder in a double underhook Canadian backbreaker. CD then swings the opponent down, lifts a leg and brings up the other, slamming the opponent face first between his legs as he sits out, arms trapped behind them. Pretty much a higher angled Angels Wings.
"Burning Hammer" - Super-finisher of Kenta Kobashi, a reverse Death Valley Driver with emphasis on the head-drop aspect.
