It was a cool evening even for this late in September, Almost 40 degrees. A brisk wind blowing out of the north seemed to cut right through the jacket he was wearing. He had just finished his workout routine and decided to walk back to the hotel he was staying in. He paused for a moment to gaze at the full moon shining brightly overhead as his thoughts carried him away.
Sometimes your best just isn't good enough. No matter how hard you try things never work out the way you want them to. Those are the times when you have to dig deep down inside yourself and fight on no matter what the odds are against you. Hank knew that better than anyone. He had been in his share of battles that he had lost only to fight on in the never ending war that is professional wrestling. from his early days as the Night Rider through the death of his brother and then his resurrection as himself, Hank 'Thunder' Lane. He knew all to well the agony of defeat and the thrill of victory. Winning championships never really mattered to him before. Being a former Tag Team Champion he knew the prestige that went along with winning them. He also knew that there were wrestlers out there who never won a championship that were better than some of the champions they never had the opportunity to face.
Now though he was beginning to change his mind. He wanted the acclaim and prestige that went along with holding a top title like the WCF World Heavyweight Championship. To be mentioned in the same breath as such great competitors as Logan, Bobby Cairo, Slickie T, Odin Balfore, Corey Black, and Jonny Fly. All greats who won the world title. It was time for him to step up and show everyone that he was ready. He knew that it wouldn't be easy, But then nothing in life ever was. If it were so easy everyone would be a champion. He would start by taking part in the War XI match. If he could somehow win that he would win the opportunity to face the World Champion at the next Pay Per View. This was his opportunity to prove to everyone, Including himself, That he was Championship material. On September the 30th in Philadelphia, Pa. His Legacy would begin.
He knew that he was good enough. He knew that he had it inside to be a World Champion. All he needed was a shot. By winning the War match he would be guaranteed that shot! Sure, He would have to go through some of the toughest competitors in the WCF today. Guys like former champions FPV, Odin Balfore, Oblivion, and Waylon Cash. Along with such greats as Nathan von Liebert, Eric Price, and Steve Orbit. He would also have to take on members of his own group Prophecy, TEK and Steel Toe Joe. It didn't matter. He would go through whoever he had to in order to come out with the victory. Friendships were all put aside when it came down to matches like this one. Just as he knew they would all be thinking the exact same thing.
The shot brought him out of his thoughts just in time to duck as he felt the bullet fly past his head. Instinctively he reached inside his jacket for the Smith and Wesson .38 Special he kept in a shoulder holster. Ever since Don had been killed he started carrying it wherever he went. He dropped to the ground and rolled behind a bush for cover. He searched in the direction the shot came from trying to catch a glimpse of who fired it. He was about to get back up and head back to his hotel when he saw the light from the full moon overhead shine off of something metal moving down a hill side off to his left. He cursed himself for not having his night scope with him as he focused on the movement. He heard another shot ring out even before he realized he had fired it. When there was no return volley he stood up and walked carefully in the direction he had fired, Taking cover along the way just in case.
He saw the guy laying on the ground just at the base of the hill. A long barreled rifle was beside him. Hank noticed that he was still breathing and rolled him over. He had caught the guy in the left shoulder. From what he could see the bullet had gone clean through. He took his jacket off and placed it under the guys head. After doing so he ripped off his T-Shirt and made a makeshift bandage out of it. After bandaging the wound he sat the guy up against one of the trees and slapped him across the face just hard enough to bring him to. The man stared at him with a painful look on his face.
Hunter: Man, What in the hell did you shoot me for?
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: Me hell, You were the one who shot at me! I was just defending myself.
Hunter: man, I am so sorry. I was just out doing a little hunting. I thought you were a bear or something.
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: Your lucky you weren't killed. The bullet went through your shoulder and it doesn't appear to have caused any serious damage. You'll need to get a few stitches though to close the wound. I made a bandage to hold for the time being. I advise you to get to a hospital soon though. You lost a lot of blood rolling down that hill.
Hunter: I'll have my friend fix it up when I get back to the lodge. She has had some medical training and can take care of it. Thanks for fixing me up. I apologize again for shooting at you. Usually no one is out in this area after dark during hunting season except for the hunters. I should have worn my hunting jacket myself so it's really my fault.
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: It's no problem man. I'm just glad that you weren't hurt any worse than you were.
Hank helped him to his feet and back to his lodge. After making sure he was alright he decided to head back to his hotel room and call it a night. Tomorrow was the beginning of what would be a serious run for him.
He was awakened by the constant ringing of the telephone in his room. He picked up the receiver and brought it to his ear.
Hank Brown: Thunder? Man, You are one tough guy to get a hold of. I have been trying to call you for days now. Do you feel like doing a short interview for the upcoming War match?
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: I think I can make time for one. What time did you have in mind?
Hank Brown: I have an opening at Nine if you can make it. I have an office set up inside the Wells fargo center. Just take the stairs on the left as you go in the front door and you'll see the area. Thanks, I appreciate it.
He hung up the phone and looked at the clock on his stand. It was a little after Eight now so he hurried up and took a shower and got dressed for the interview. He took a cab to the Arena and took the stairway up to the second floor. He could see Hank Brown standing outside in the hallway talking to his cameraman.
Hank Brown: Here he is now right on time. It's good to see you again Thunder. Come on in and we'll get this rolling.
He followed Hank Brown inside one of the rooms. There was a Huge WCF Banner hanging on a wall in front of the camera. A podium with the WCF emblem on the front of it stood before the banner. Hank Brown grabbed a microphone and walked over to podium as the whir of the camera running could be heard.
Hank Brown: Ladies and Gentlemen it is my pleasure to be standing here with none other than Hank 'Thunder' Lane. One of the members of Prophecy who will be participating in the War XI match coming up Tomorrow Night. Thunder, What are your thoughts going into this match?
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: I'll tell you what Hank. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. This is probably one of the biggest matches of my career! To be stepping into the ring with the best that WCF has to offer. This match is a virtual who's who of some of the greatest wrestlers in the sport today! I will definitely have my work cut out for me.
Hank Brown: You will also be facing TEK and STJ two co members of Prophecy. Are there any plans for the three of you working together?
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: That would all depend on the situation. If we are in there early enough and are able to work together we will, Otherwise it's every man for himself. We are all in there for one thing and that is to win!
Hank Brown: Some of the other competitors have already come out and stated their intentions of winning this match also, Such greats as former World Champion Odin Balfore who said that Seth Lerch was throwing the rest of the roster off of a cliff into the jaws of a monster, Him. Even Roy Speede the Hardcore Champion will be taking part. I spoke with him earlier and he is about as determines as anyone to come out on top. What makes you think that you can defeat the rest of the participants in this match? What makes you stand out above the rest?
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: Three things Hank. Drive, Determination, And Discipline. The Three 'D's. Every Champion has those three things in common! You have to have the Drive to keep you going through the rough spots, The Determination to succeed no matter what, And the Discipline to pace yourself and stick to whatever game plan you have. plus there is one other thing that will carry me even further, The Hunger that burns inside of me and screams to be fed! I have never won a World Championship. Not because I wasn't good enough but because I was mostly a Tag Team member for most of my career. It is the one thing that drives me on. Something I would like to achieve at least once in my career. This is my shot to show the world that I am a force to be reckoned with!
Hank Brown: Not many in this match are even giving you the slightest chance of winning. How does that make you feel?
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: That my friend is just one more advantage that I will have on my side. The element of surprise can truly be a dangerous one. Not for me, But for those who underestimate me and wont see the danger coming! I am going into this match with one agenda and that is to be the one remaining in the end, Standing in the center of that ring with my arm raised in victory!
Hank Brown: What then? What's next?
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: What do you mean, What's next? 'One' Is what is next! That and MY shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Nothing and No One is going to stop me from achieving what I set out to do. Not Odin, Not Speede, Not Orbit, STJ, TEK, Oblivion, eric Price, Or Anyone! This is MY time to shine and I will be damned if I am going to let anyone take it away from me!
Hank Brown: Thank you, Thunder. I wish you the best of luck in your quest.
Hank 'Thunder' Lane: Did you hear me say anything about some damn luck? Luck has nothing to do with it! It is all in the skills and you and I know I am the best around! Luck is for fools and dreamers. It's the stuff fairy tales are made of. This is no fairy tale, This is real life!
Hank Brown: There you have it folks. It sounds like Thunder is bound and determined to win this match and the ultimate prize, The WCF World Heavyweight Championship!
The camera pulls in and does a close up of the WCF Emblem before the screen goes black.
