It’s hard losing loved ones. Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters, friends and sometimes even enemies. Regardless, we’ve all experienced it. But imagine gaining a loved one and losing another. Imagine having to be the one who causes that loss. Imagine both being the person who causes that loss… and the loss.
Today’s scene begins inside the Vice household. Sitting at the living room table is Skyler Striker, whose eyes are red from tears. The scene is obviously only a few hours after what occurred within the Striker house and Skyler is obviously still feeling the effects of Jade’s choice. Katie Striker is with him, but she is more interested in surveying the Vice’s residence which seems to be incredibly interesting to her. Skyler wipes his eyes with a tissue and gets a pat on the back as his newfound friend, Danny Vice, enters the room with three cans of soda. He gives one to Skyler, one to Katie, who opens it quickly and drinks down a gulp that looked slightly too big for her, and opens one himself. Skyler does not open his can yet, still trying to recover from the shock of losing his only biological daughter. Danny takes a drink from his can and sets it on the table before finally trying to make contact with Skyler.
DV: Skyler, I know how you feel. How do you think I felt when Janie left? Course, she hit me on the head with a chair, so naturally I was more in pain than crying, but it’s essentially the same. It sounds from what you’ve told me that Jade is likely to return. I’m not sure how soon, but she’ll come back. You’re just going to have to be patient.
SS: You don’t understand! She’s seven years old! I have absolutely no idea where she is! She could have been kidnapped, or taken somewhere, or…
DV: However, Skyler, she is a genius, and she’s learned from you and Jack of Blades. She’s liable to know some sort of self-defence.
SS: I don’t mind her being away… I just want to know where she is.
As Skyler says this, Jimmy Vice walks into the room. He sees Skyler, Katie and Danny and immediately stops to talk.
JV: What’s wrong, Skyler?
DV: His daughter’s missing.
There is a pause here. Jimmy does not say anything and Danny looks at him inquisitively.
DV: What’s up?
JV: See, the thing is, I kinda know where she went.
DV/SS: WHAT?
Jimmy puts a hand behind his head as he sighs and knows he has to reveal his knowledge of Jade’s whereabouts.
JV: Yeah. Do you want to know where she is?
SS: Of course I do, Jimmy! Just tell me!
JV: JADE!
Skyler gives Jimmy a look of shock, as does Danny. Katie takes another sip of her soda, more careful of how much she puts in her mouth this time. Into the room walks a little girl, dressed in street clothes and trainers identical to the ones seen on Jade earlier – namely because the little girl IS Jade.
SS: Jade!
Jade sees her father and gives him a look of disgust. She leaves the room straight afterwards and as Skyler moves to get her, Jimmy puts a hand out.
JV: Skyler, I understand you want to help her, but she wants some time alone for a while. I won’t reveal what she said exactly, but why don’t you just let her stay here for a while? You know she’s in good hands.
SS: I…suppose…
DV: Then it’s settled. Jade can stay here until she feels she needs to move back. Jimmy, go keep an eye on her. Skyler, come with me.
Skyler and Katie follow Danny into the hallway that leads to the Vice’s front door.
DV: Skyler, your Pyramid Match is two days away. You need to forget about Jade, and concentrate on beating Thunder. I can’t do anything to help inside a structure like that, which means it’s mano a mano in there. You’re gonna have to use your emotion again. You were the one who was supposed to have drawn on all parts of yourself at War. Take an extra dose of the Fury Crusader this Sunday. You know the plan – it’s gonna take a lot to pull it off. Go, start training. I’ve got to talk to Jimmy.
SS: If you’re sure. Take care of Jade.
Danny nods as Skyler heads out the front door. Danny stares at Skyler walking to his car and Katie following him.
JS: Take care, father.
Danny turns around to see Jade leaning against the hallway wall, and nods to her. Jade disappears again and the scene ends.
