I was really happy to see this topic come up.
I agree with most of what has been said by everyone, I'll just add a few thoughts.. to me, character development, individuality and entertainment value are what make a good RP. I don't think length makes any difference at all. I do think, the longer it is, the less likely people are going to read it, or at least read the whole thing. I try to keep that in mind when I am writing. My RPs _always_ end up being longer than I expect them to be when I start them.
I also think, it depends where you are in the league, and how long you have been here, etc. I think new guys like me, need to spend a lot of time in an RP developing our character. Showing who our character is and what makes him/her unique or interesting. Now other guys who have been here for a long period of time, they might already have a well-developed character, and they are able to focus more on their current storylines, past and current events, etc.
Like others have said, we all have different styles of RPing. For me, I think just pure trash talk, is very boring. ESPECIALLY with an undeveloped character, it just sounds very generic, and empty. It's like the words don't have any weight. It's basically, how many different ways can you say "I'm the best and you suck and I'm gonna kill you". But on the other hand, if you have a well developed character, with a clear personality or gimmick, even when they trash talk it can be entertaining. Because when they speak, you say to yourself "that sounds like something that character would say". To me, that is the goal, to carve out a unique slot and unique personality for your character.
We all do this for fun, and to be creative, and ultimately I think being challenged to write a good RP is the life of efedding. It's what keeps us going and what keeps us interested. Sure, we all want to win, but when we can create characters that entertain ourselves, and hopefully others, that is better than any win or loss.
Again as far as length of RPs, I think some are just more prone to write more, and some are more comfortable writing less. As long as it's entertaining, I don't think it matters, and I don't think it should be a factor in judging at all. A well thought out, clever, entertaining RP thats only a page long, should beat a 20 page generic trash talk rant any day of the week. Like Seth said in the first post, the amount of thought and effort should definitely be considered, how committed are you to bringing your character to life rather than just talking shit every week and changing it a little bit to suit your opponent.
Anyway, great topic, great replies so far, and I would love to know what others have to say about it.
