There the embankment shoots forth flames of fire,
And upward doth the cornice breathe a blast
That drives them back, and from itself sequesters.
-Canto XXV, Purgatorio, The Divine Comedy
Dante Alighierei
Today’s scene begins in a dark room, lit only by the light of a wooden fire. Nothing can be seen but the red eyes and the face of Skyler Striker, who is sitting near the wood fire. No lights are on, there is no music playing, no television in the background. Katie Striker has left the house tonight to go and stay with Angela, Skyler’s mother. Skyler instead prefers to sit in front of the fire and remain alone with his thoughts. But these thoughts are not happy, nor are they of anything that particularly excites Skyler. These thoughts rest only with Jade Striker and Bobby Cairo, and a way to retake his daughter from a maniac’s hands. The training rooms in the basement of his house remain unused, untouched since Skyler left the box last week. Striker has said very little the last few days, preferring to talk only to himself, regardless of whether he thinks he is crazy or not. His own voice is the only way he can stay sane.
As sane as a man in his situation can be.
And it is here that we must depart reality and look into the thoughts of Skyler Striker.
The seven deadly sins… Cairo is guilty of them all. I will be his punishment. My reward will be Jade. And he admitted it when Jade sent me that video. He admitted the sin of lust right there and then. I will take hold of that weakness, and destroy him with it.
The fire is warm, and Skyler holds his hands out to heat them up. But Skyler is uncomfortable. His mind cannot be allowed to run away. Skyler turns to the recording camera and looks up at it intently, with hatred in his eyes, as if Cairo himself were right behind it. His voice shakes, the voice of a man driven to the very edge of insanity by a man who has already crossed that edge.
SS: I don’t ask why, Cairo. Your mind would have no answer for a question as simple as that. I don’t ask questions at all, really, as answers from you mean nothing to me. I simply move on and eliminate any obstacle in my path. I don’t ask questions. I create answers.
Striker takes a very deep breath and lets it all out, regaining some composure, which he then loses in the next instant.
SS: Bobby Cairo. WCF Television Champion. Former WCF Champion. That means nothing to me. The WCF Championship means nothing to me. And that’s the biggest mistake you made, Cairo. You gave me a real reason to fight. If Jade had stayed by my side you would have been better off. If Jade had remained with me then I would have had everything I wanted and you could have taken advantage of my weakness to throw me to the mat and pin me easily. If what you want is the WCF World Championship, then you made a mistake. If what you want is pain in others, you’ve succeeded. But in taking Jade, Cairo, you gave away any chance you had of winning. If my daughter’s safety is on the line, I will not lose. If Jade is not by my side, I will jump higher, run faster, attack harder than I ever would with her there. Cairo, Cairo, Cairo… technical mastermind you may be. Master of the mind, you are not.
Striker pauses again and turns to the fire, staring into its depths.
SS: Cairo, you know what the punishment was for those who committed the deadly sin of Lust? They were to be burnt until they were purged. You’ve committed the sin of Lust, Cairo. You made passes at Sasha, and being Cairo you told me yourself that you take people off the street and commit the sin of Lust with them.
Striker looks at the camera, his hands still extended towards the fire.
SS: This Sunday, Cairo, my fire will purge you, and you’ll come out with 3rd degree burns. I will not slow, I will not stop, I will not fail, Cairo. This is my game, my rules, and when I catch you, you will tap to the Lockdown like everyone else.
Striker’s eyes fire a deadly red.
SS: Do you know why, Cairo?
And Striker grins his maniacal grin.
SS: Because I’m Skyler goddamn Striker.
And Striker says nothing more, his mind racing, adrenalin flowing, and Sunday approaching ever quicker.
