The scene opens to Corey Black's dungeon under the bell tower. A sole light shines down from the ceiling, lighting up a black clad pro wrestling ring on the floor. Nothing else is seen, the rest of the room isn't lit at all. Five giant, evenly spaced out TV screens come to life beyond the ring, on the wall. As they turn on, it's evident what is playing on all of them. The main events of each of the last One events. Neo taking on Trent Hunter on the first, PC Cradle and Madd Dogg on the second, Jack of Blades verses Logan on the third, Slickie T and Torture on the fourth, and finally Brad Kane facing Torture on the fifth. Every match the biggest deal of the year. Some of the best wrestlers WCF has ever seen. Nine men have had the honor of main eventing One. A third of them are still seen to this day, and even then it's very rarely.
All at once, the final pinfall of the five matches is shown, in sync with each other. The celebrations are enormous. The five men deserving of the praise they receive. Once the celebrations play out for a minute, the TVs change and show different matches. All of Corey Black's matches at One. Ultraviolent Ladder Match verses Reckless Jack, No DQ against Rick Mad, The Jobber Gauntlet on the third, and the last two? Blank. Nothing on them at all. Corey Black was last seen on One as the special referee for Torture's match against Brad Kane, irony setting in as Torture is now the referee for Corey Black's One match. The show before that, the match that should be on the fourth television? Nowhere to be seen on the card. Corey has exactly one victory in three One matches, unless you count the gauntlet as separate matches. A terrible record, for such a historic wrestler and event.
More often than not, Corey Black's success comes in the form of XIII, an event he puts on.. an event that is fast approaching. Preparations for that are on hold, however, as Odin Balfore stands in Corey's path to glory. While Odin has been out drinking, playing magician, and causing crimes, Corey has locked himself in this place. Aside from Amanda Mosby earlier in the week, nobody has seen him, and he has only put forth one video speaking about the big match coming up. For Odin, this is just another match. He hasn't been around long enough to know the importance of the contest he is to partake in later on today. Black, though, has been around for it all. Six days from now marks the ten year anniversary of Creeping Death's debut in WCF. Ten years of ups, downs, bells, and accomplishments. Finally, after all that, a little less than the actual ten year mark, that little cruiserweight from Net Championship Wrestling, the dude that walked into one of the best companies on the planet and took the Cruiserweight Title, held it, and defended it in one of the greatest matches ever seen.. walking out with the NCW World Title, gets his match of a lifetime. That's not to say everything that has been done before is for nothing, but none of it can compare to the magnitude of this match. Take all the big matches throughout his career, and put them into a ball. Now compare the weight of that to the weight of this match... equal, if not more.
It wasn't always like this, either. For YEARS people have been saying Corey Black is passed his prime. He'll never be 'the man' again. WCF has been overtaken by a new generation of wrestlers, as it always has been. The one constant has been Creeping Death. Torture leaves, Logan leaves, Brad Kane leaves, Creeping Death doesn't leave. Breaks are taken, sure, but they are always short lived. A month or two at best. He has even been suspended before, but that didn't deter him. Even though he competes somewhere else at this very moment, he couldn't stay away from WCF. This, the first time in his entire career, Corey Black is wrestling actively in two companies. It was always WCF or nothing for him, but the years of constant verbal abuse from the 'new gen' guys finally got to him. Corey closed down WCF and packed up shop, moving his talents to New York City infront of a world-wide audience on the internet. And it was for the best. Corey is at his peak, probably better than he has ever been. His final moments in WCF were getting powerbombed relentlessly by Odin. Over and over, finishing it off with a Burning Hammer. It was supposed to be left at that. WCF should have seen the last of Corey Black and Creeping Death that night. But it wasn't to be true. Odin Balfore continued to run his mouth, claiming to be the man that broke Corey. Using Corey's name to boost his own career.
But then, 'He.' reimerged. A shadow that has stalked WCF for the better part of the year. 'He.' would show up randomly, just to poke his head in and remind everyone that he was watching. And he was, because it was Corey Black all along. A month of active WCF shows had passed, coming up to Helloween. Odin and Johnny Reb going one on one for the World Title Odin shouldn't have lost in the first place. Balfore's victory was short lived, though, as an army of Halloween costume clad people came down to the ring, and 'He.' was revealed as Corey Black. It was war from then on in. Corey verses Odin, Odin verses Seth, Corey and Odin verses Seth.. confusing, to say the least. Seth had almost erased everything Corey Black did for WCF, the main thing was stripping Odin of the World Title. In that sense, the two men had a common enemy, but the alliance was shaky at best. Odin took a cheap shot the one time they helped each other, and that was it.
The secret of Odin's One opponent was kept secret for far too long. Most assumed it was the returning Torture, who used Twitter to make his impact. The general feeling was that of apathy, as everyone figured CD would be getting his rematch with Odin, for all the reasons in the world. Alas, it was revealed. Torture as the ref, Corey Black in the match, a total flip of last year's main event. That's just it, though. Torture has been out of WCF for countless months now. Little to no contact with his 'best friend.' What side is he on? Let's fact it, Torture isn't exactly the most trustworthy man. Is he even on a side? Perhaps he just wants a paycheck and he'll call it fairly. So many unnecessary factors in such a simple, straightforward match. The Little Cruiserweight from NCW taking on the Monster from ancient times. A better story couldn't be written by the best writers on the planet.
The televisions on the dungeon turn off completely mid-matches, leaving only the ring to be seen. Footsteps are heard coming toward the ring, and in rolls Corey Black. He is wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, naturally with the hood up, and ripped up jeans. On his feet, a pair of black Chucks. Corey positions himself in the middle of the ring and places his hands behind his back, tilting his head back a bit. The TV screens light up once again, and across all five, the Roman numeral for 'ten,' 'X,' seemingly scrolls. Starting on the first screen, scrolling across that one to the second, and so forth. The 'X' goes by three times, when Corey puts his head down a bit more, and the screens change again. This time, still shots of CD in various points in his career in WCF. The TLC Match with Logan, his very first big match in WCF. The World Title victory over Hellz Angel, where he unified the TV and World Championships. Defeating Skyler Striker in the Nightmare Chamber at XIII, again winning the World Title. On the fourth screen, retaining the title at the end of the WCF Classic against Steve Carr. And on the final screen, a relayed shot of Corey standing in his ring right now.
Who knows what 2012 holds for Corey Black, or even WCF in general? This could very well be the year Corey hangs up the boots. Or, it could be the year he proves his worth to everyone. There is no denying him, now. Everyone in the last few years that have said he is old, broken, and a shell of his former self aren't in the main event of One. They're not even in WCF anymore. Names like Jason Kash, Skyler Striker, and Slickie T. They tried to overthrow the old guard, and here he stands, while they are in obscurity. That, in itself, makes this match all the more sweet. The eyes of the world are on Corey Black and Odin Balfore tonight, hopefully that includes the mentioned three men, and the countless other that had their mentality. There is a reason why they continue to return to WCF. It's because they know it has history, and some of the best wrestlers in the world. Tonight is no different. History will be made by two of the greatest WCF has ever seen.
Even still, Corey has yet to say a word. The screens are saying far more than he ever could. He's always been more about the in ring than the talking. Everything he has ever done speaks far more than words could do right now. From the ten years, to the titles, to the relationships gained and lost, Corey Black has no words for this occasion. He has said everything he wants to say to Odin, now it is time to get into the ring and finish what was started. A decade long path leads to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania tonight at One. Two paths travel forward from that point on. One road called 'victory,' the other called 'defeat.' No matter the road, Corey Black will take it head on. There is no doubt, no matter the outcome, the paths of Corey and Odin will cross again. It could be in a month, it could be in two weeks. Whichever the case may be, WCF will never be quite the same place. Not because of who will be champion, but because either CD will be shut up forever, or all the critics will be proven wrong.
The everlasting question remains, though; can Corey Black not only win the World Title, but defend it? Technically, he hasn't ever won a title defense. After the XIII win, WCF shut down. The very next thing to happen was the Classic, again for the World Title, and CD won that. In the eyes of many, that was a World Title defense, but not on paper. That is just the point, though. He has never though of the Title as the be-all-end-all best in the company. While Odin needs the title to be relevant, Corey Black simply needs to walk out of the back. So yeah, in that sense, Odin needs this more. But Corey needs the match more. He needs the win, and the One moment more than the World Heavyweight Title. As valuable as the World Title is, it's nothing compared to the One moment. Titles come and go, matches like this are once in a lifetime. It's time to grab the brass ring, climb that ladder one more time, and pull off what could be called an upset victory.
The TV screens shut off once again. Corey, still standing in the ring with his head down, motionless, has not moved. Little by little, the edges of the spotlight close in on Corey, soon only a single beam of light shines down, not much wider than a quarter. It flickers through the colors of the rainbow once, before turning off completely. An entire career leading up to this, crossing the rainbow bridge to decide the fate of the norn under the greyclouded winter sky.
