A dark screen appears before the eyes of the viewer, with little to be seen except for the overwhelming black that envelops before their eyes. However, there is much to be heard. The muffled sound of rain crashing against concrete and bitumen, the light howls of wind which sway trees and echo hauntingly. And then comes the patter of feet, a constant rhythmic beat that hits the same pavement that endures the rain, a beat that is almost lost among the wind as it begins to pick up.
But, before it can fade away entirely, the scene opens up, and the screen comes to life.
Ethan King, in all his eminent glory, appears on screen, wearing a grey windbreaker, a black beanie that hides away his thick locks of blonde hair, along with baggy tracksuit pants and red Nike runners. The camera pans in on him, as he carries forth through the less than ideal weather on this otherwise quiet Chicago night. There are few others that populate the streets, and only a few stray lights manage to flare up in the countless buildings that surround Ethan as his ‘journey’ continues.
As he continues to speed down the streets of The Windy City, his voice cuts through all other sound, reverberating loudly through the device of whatever the viewer is watching on, even though his mouth on the screen doesn’t move, his stern faced expression remaining unchanged.
“I persevere. I am relentless. I persist. I keep going. Tell me, have you ever thought about what it truly means, to do any of those things? What people fail to understand in life, is that being Relentless, being persevering and unyielding before the great challenges of life? It’s not just a mentality, it’s not something that you’re just given from some so-called God or Higher Power, and it’s not something that’s merely earned through improving your own physical being.
“Being Relentless? It’s a lifestyle.”
The scene transitions from the rainy streets, to a state of the art gym facility. The walls all positively shine with a pure white, and boast many pictures and quotes from many of sports greatest names and faces. LeBron James, Floyd Mayweather, Serena Williams, and yes… Joey Flash.
The gym itself is widespread and intimidating, countless men and women can be seen working on the various equipment made available to the members of the club. Bench presses, treadmills, crunch machines, all the usual and more is put on offer to those that dedicate their time to this place. However, in the far corner, there is a more barren and open space, with only one man and his water bottle, and a looming red heavy bag which invites itself to be hit by the man.
Ethan King swings forward with a sharp left hand that snaps against the bag, followed by a second punch – a right straight – that explodes off of the bags’ leather material and sends it rocketing upward and back. As it swings itself back towards Ethan, picking up in its momentum, he snaps off a vicious side kick with his left leg, followed by curling himself down and to the right, before unleashing an impactful right hook that, if given the chance, could rock The World.
Once again, Ethan’s voice picks up.
“It takes a lot to be Relentless, and honestly? Not many can manage it. It takes countless hours of hard work, both mental and physical. It takes a wounded personality that has endured some of the hardest struggles in life, and it also takes the motivation and the determination to succeed and overcome any and all that have come before you. And that?
“That’s where you begin to fall off.
“That’s when the challenge becomes just a little too much. That’s when the overwhelming odds start to stack up against you, and you just begin to realize exactly what you’re coming up against. That’s when all the heart and fire you may have once had? Slowly begins to dim, gradually begins to turn into a flicker, rather than a flame. And eventually?
“It’s entirely snuffed out, without a trace of it left. The flame of hope that once flared brightly amongst the darkness is invaded and it inevitably expires.
“And that, that’s exactly what has happened to you. The Relentless One. The one who prided himself on his never back down nature, the one who prided himself upon carrying an entire division upon his shoulders, the one who prided himself on being the only one who would keep fighting until the end.
“You died, but when exactly did you die? How did it happen?
“Let me tell you.”
Once again, a change in scenery. Ethan, while formerly surrounded by at least some life in the previous scenes, is now entirely alone. He is kneeling before a gargantuan figure which casts a shadow over him and the maroon wall that is situated behind him. His hair is matted with dried blood, and he has fresh wounds in his arm, chest, and on his forehead, which all allow the red force of life to slowly drain itself from his being. As the figure’s shadow draws nearer, he is pushed straight up against the wall.
“It happened the moment your back got pushed against the wall, and you allowed every single one of your demons to, in that singular, fateful moment, take over your mind, body and soul. Once… and for all.
“But me? I broke the mould. I fought back against the oppressors, I fought back against those same demons that once pushed me into nightmares and panic attacks. Those same beings that could once enter my mind at their will and influence me to turn into an equally terrible monster? I now had the power to fight back, and little did they know…
“I could be just as cruel. Just as malevolent. Just as dastardly as they were at their best.
“And that? That wasn’t even the fucking start of it.”
For the last time, the scene changes. And now, Ethan is in a smaller room, and as the camera pans out, it’s evident that he is standing inside the Eye of Everest, the man-made creation that his friend David Sanchez played the biggest part in establishing. From the room, Chicago could hardly be seen through the white cloud wall which stretched for as far as the eye could see. But inside the room? Rested all of Ethan’s work in the recent months.
His United States Championship, or a replica of it, at the very least.
His Trios Ring, which had been forged and given to him as a symbol of dominance he and his Everest companions had achieved over the WCF.
And his half of the Tag Team Championships, which rested alone on a glass table, separated from his other two signs of achievement in his relatively short career in the WCF. Ethan turns away from the view that the Everest Eye provides him with, to face the camera that is pointed directly at his face.
“Now, here I am. I stand at the pinnacle of success, along with those that have fought alongside me to get to where we are now. Upon joining Everest, I have seen nothing but the tallest heights and pure, utter dominance. This, this is what my life has become.
“Every single enemy that has come before me, I have toppled with an iron fist, and I have earned my way to this Showdown which now takes place. There is nobody that can frighten me, nobody that can intimidate me into believing that I do not have the power to craft my own legacy within this World that we live in.
“Just take a look for yourself.”
He gestures over towards another table, which now appears as though it has been put into place, especially for this video. On it rests three items. A shark’s head. A rusted old crown. And last but not least, a Greek looking temple replica, one that has been broken and split in certain areas, as several pillars have fallen and the doors to the miniature sized temple are broken.
Ethan approaches the shark’s head, and runs a hand delicately down its face, in a manner that is almost as if he is caressing the head which has been separated from the shark’s body.
“I overcame the #BeachKrew, and all of the manipulation and deceit they attempted to control me with. Jared Holmes wanted to make me a slave, he wanted me to do nothing but his very own bidding, and what did I do? I bounced him from Trios, I wrote my own story, and I transcended to something that he thought he’d never allow me to become. Whether it be Dustin Beaver, Andre Aquarius, Wade Moor, or Jared himself, I have defeated them all and put them in their place. And that? That was only the beginning.”
He moves to the right, towards the tattered crown, he examines in carefully for a moment, as he picks it up from the table carefully and brings it close to his face.
“The Three Kings. A team made in heaven, some would have called it. Featuring some of the best talent that WCF could possibly offer (or at least, that’s what people were thinking, until Everest arrived on the scene). Kevin Bishop? Well, he turned out to be nothing but an extra serving of mediocrity. But Jayson Price and Gravedigger? Those two were established WCF legends, two men who have helped carried the company to the position it is in at this very moment. And what happened to them? What ended up happening to that group? They fell before myself and Everest, we left them broken. We took their Gold, we took their Pride, and we earned the right to call ourselves the most dominant team in the history of Trios.
“And look, what do you know? Digger and Price are back at it again, sneaking their way into the Ultimate Showdown at the very last moment, hoping that they can make something of themselves and perhaps slyly put themselves over against the newer, more charismatic and more talented champions that now run this WCF (besides Dion Necurat, I suppose).
“But we’ll get to those two at another time, and another place. For they are not the focus for this little tirade I am going on…”
He trails off, as he steps over towards the last object on display. The replica Greek temple, the tattered temple which, if given a few more days, would probably turn into nothing but a mess of rubble and material.
“The newest incarnation of Pantheon were much like the #BeachKrew, but merely improved and more put together in terms of numbers, even though their objective was mostly unclear and involved stepping over one another in a rushed attempt to reach the top spot.
“But, whilst Pantheon attempted to assert itself as the dominant force in this company, I was in wait. I have always tried to remain patient and calm, even in the most exciting of moments, and it’s shown throughout my career – in the biggest situation, I always come out on top. So yes, I waited, and waited. And eventually? Things began to fall into place. First came Andre Holmes, I used his overconfidence and unnecessary amounts of aggressiveness against him, and this allowed me to defeat him with relative ease. Then came Wade Moor, his lack of awareness and fighting spirit gave me the ultimate opportunity to put him face first into the mat… and that’s exactly what I did. More of Pantheon have come to blows with me, and every time they have? I have come out on top. Just like the #BeachKrew, Pantheon couldn’t hold a candle to me and my abilities, and along with Everest? It became clear as day which group, which team, had solidified itself at the top of the food chain.
“And now, what is Pantheon? A broken unit. It is near impossible to tell who is still a part of the squad, who has been removed from it, and who has removed THEMSELVES from it. This, this is what I along with Everest have accomplished. Myself and Bale broke Wade Moor, and now he’s losing matches to William The Behemoth of all fucking people. John Rabid and Andre Holmes have done nothing except flounder in their respective divisions, achieving little except maintaining themselves as ‘solid competitors’ who continue to dominate men who wouldn’t even be able to touch Everest on our worst days. This, this is what Pantheon has come to.
“And at Ultimate Showdown? Myself, Steven Singh, and David Sanchez? We’re all coming in to destroy it, once and for all.”
He stops himself, waiting momentarily before pacing over towards the view the Everest Eye offers him once more. But before he can reach the edge of the room, he turns around, a cold look in his eye.
“Through every challenge, I have remained steadfast. Through every obstacle, I have remained unwavering and unrelenting in my progress towards my ultimate goal of becoming World Champion and bringing Everest to the literal top of the mountain.
“I have persevered.
“I have been relentless.
“I have persisted.
“I have kept going.
“And now comes the object of this little rant, the man who has failed to do those things. The man who long ago gave up his own ideals and his own persona to become a vanilla, bland, background player in a crew that was far too big for him to ever handle on his own.”
He cuts himself short, as he sits down on a seat behind a small desk located near the end of the room. He places himself on the chair, and kicks his feet up on the otherwise empty desk.
“Andre Holmes, does any of this sound familiar to you?
“If it took you this long to figure out I was talking about you, which is a very high chance considering you’re superb at missing the obvious and fucking up at the most simple of tasks, which can include:
>Beating Oblivion
>Being the best member on a team featuring Gemini Battle
>Accomplishing more in your 40+ match career other than ‘dominating’ a niche division filled with subpar talent
“These are just a few of many instances where you have severely underperformed, all of which has factored in to your less than outstanding reputation at this very moment. Because, if we’re being honest, Andre? For most of your career you’ve been underperforming. Sure, your record backs you up as being one of the best in the business at the moment, and you carry yourself with this supposed ‘relentlessness’ that has gotten you to where you are, what is it that you’ve really done?
“You defeated Crazy J for the Hardcore Championship, a less than astounding feat that around ninety percent of the roster could’ve achieved at that point in time, considering he wasn’t even the best member of a Zero Tolerance team that became obscure the moment your Pantheon superiors in better Holmes, Rabid and Moor, defeated them at ONE.
“Since winning your championship, you’ve defeated the likes of…
“Vinnie Jones, Mikey eXtreme, CJ Phoenix, Teo Del Sol, Udy, and a few others.
“Would you be surprised to hear that I have defeated all of these men on several occasions? Hell, I’ve taken out Mikey alone a total of four times, and that’s not even to mention that in half of those matches, I was on fucking cruise control, because I knew that all the work I had put in up until that point was enough to beat all of those guys, even when I wasn’t trying to my full potential.
“Your run as champion, Andre? It’s been impressive, at least in terms of numbers and figures. Seven defences, over 170 days as champion, and you’re still going stronger than ever. But let’s look at this objective, besides Odin Balfore, who have you defended your title against that has been even a minimal threat towards your reign?
“This, this is where you start to fall flat, Andre. You’re used to competing at a midcard level, you were never made for the bright lights. That’s why the only ‘major’ success you’ve ever had in the wrestling industry has been over at UCI, where you’ve benefited from facing off against second-rate talent who have never quite understood where your flaws lie, and how to expose them.
“But me, on the other hand? I know exactly how to counter you. You’re overzealous, you’re the most eager man in this match, and thus that makes you the most prone to making a fatal error that will lead to your elimination. Thus, you’re one of the first on my list to be dispatched of in this match, since you will almost undoubtedly do something completely and utterly retarded that will cause your chances of even marginal success in this match to evaporate, just like any hope of you becoming a main-eventer in this federation evaporated the moment you made the biggest mistake of your career…
“Remember when you joined Pantheon for good, Andre? Do you remember those good times? Those times when you were classified in the same standing as guys like Dagvald Riddik, who have done nothing except throw themselves time and time again at gimmick championships that hold little to no weight within the federation? Yeah, that’s someone who was considered ‘on your level’ at the time of your arrival in Pantheon, and as I said… joining them? It showed your true colours.
“It proved that you, Andre Holmes, were not Relentless. It instead showed that you’re nothing but a coward, someone who was too afraid and fearful of the challenge to rise up and combat the men who looked to dominate the federation. Rather than fight them, you thought it’d be better to join them, to throw away each and every one of your values and use your mid-level talents somewhere else.
“You realized the moment Pantheon came running back through the door… that you stood little to no chance of making an impact. That’s why, the moment they came back, you began pandering to them. Every now and again, you’d make a little comment backing them up. Hell, you even threw away a match against the #BeachKrew portion of Pantheon, giving them the win and sealing your fate as Pantheon’s ultimate bitch.
“From the day they arrived, your Relentless nature slowly began to slip. That lifestyle you were living? Yeah, it became nothing but a show, a terrible show that grew worse and worse as the days went on, until finally? It reached its finale. And that finale came the moment you gave up everything and became a member of Pantheon. Now, I want you to tell me. Where exactly has that gotten you, Andre?
“Now you just play second fiddle to John Rabid, who has been poised to take the World Title since returning, but has been stuck in very much the same boat that you’ve been stuck in for quite some time now. Now you’re both here, the lone two members of Pantheon, what’s it going to be, Andre? Are you going to be truly Relentless, and take him out to advance your own position? It’s the Pantheon way, after all, to betray one another to bring yourself higher up on the food chain.
“Or are you just going to slink away, back into the shadows as you’ve always done? Are you going to suck up to John, give him exactly what he wants? You aren’t Relentless in the slightest, Andre. All you seek is validation and recognition, two things that have avoided you since the moment you returned. You’ve done nothing but establish yourself as a guy who’ll forever be known as the man who ‘never quite made it’. While the rest of us are rising in stock, and edging closer and closer towards the World Title? You’ve stagnated.
“It’s about time you learned your place, Andre. Your time is reaching the end. And now? It’s about time I showed you what it truly means to be Relentless.
“Because there’s always been a vital part of being Relentless that you’ve missed, Andre. And that is…
“Being Indomitable.
“I am one of indomitable will and spirit. Even when I supposedly had my mind ‘broken’ by Jared Holmes, even when I had my very own soul taken away from me from countless drugs, mind-games, and horrors, I came back fighting and have turned myself into one of the most must-see talents the WCF has ever seen. I have put my life back together, and I am now on the road to ultimate success and glory that someone of your calibre will never, ever be able to witness for themselves.
“This is where I stand now, Andre. I am the Relentless One, I am the Indomitable One, and I am the one that will show you the light, and help you realize that in this Showdown? You never stood a fucking chance.
“You’re nothing but overconfident, overly emotional, and unrefined. You will do what you always do, you will let things get to your head, you will work yourself up into a restless state, where you eventually screw up and let everyone that ever had even the tiniest bit of hope in you (not many people, if you’re wondering) down magnificently. You will be the most magnificent fuck up this World has ever seen. Months upon months of defences leading up until this moment, and you Andre Holmes… are going to throw it all down the fucking drain.
“This is what it’s come down to, Andre. All your hard work is about to go to disappear into nothingness. Will you be able to settle for a Tag Team Championship? I fucking hope so. I’ve had to put it up with it for far too long now, and while I’m trading my way up in this World, while I’m pulling myself rung by rung up the WCF Ladder… you’re falling down.
“Say hello to the new face of Relentlessness, Andre Holmes. For the first time in your career, you’re going to have your ‘moment’ stolen from you, right before your very eyes. Knowing you, you’ll work up a big fuss about it, run straight to the Internet to complain about it, and then work yourself into a pointless fucking shoot.
“But once I leave you broken at my feet, Andre? I want you to realize something.
“This really is the first time.
“And it’s definitely not going to be the last.
“Farewell, Andre. You’ve served your purpose. Whatever role you thought you had at the start of this Showdown? It’s less than you think. You were never meant to play the lead, you were never meant to be the main star. You’re just a role-player, a backbencher, and now?
“I’m going to bring you to the truthful, harsh, tragic end to your story. One match, that’s all it’s going to take, Andre. You’ve avoided your fears and enemies in the past, so tell me this…
“How are you going to hide this time?
“You won't be able to, because there is no escape."
