In Flight Thoughts
Adam Burnett is sitting in his assigned seat on his Southwest flight home from the New Year’s edition of Slam. He is enjoying a complimentary Sprite and some pretzels as he awaits his arrival home. A slight smile is on his face as he closes his eyes and thinks of his previous night. It went better than he could have thought. He continued his winning streak to start his WCF career, even with the hijinks of his supposed tag team partner Jason O’Neal and he showed a few more people that he was for real.
He knows that most people would not have given him a chance against Rise and Diaboli if he was going to basically fight him alone but Burnett showed that he is never going to give up and against all odds, he can come out on top. Now he knows that he may have not gotten the pin but he was fighting three people out there last night and the only reason O’Neal got the pin was because he cheapshotted Burnett and wanted the glory for himself. Typical. O’Neal always wants the glory and that is the thing about him that pisses off Burnett.
They easily could have worked together and gotten the win but for some reason O’Neal wanted to test Burnett. That or he thought a beat down from Rise and Diaboli would soften him up for their upcoming match for the Alpha Title. Either way his plan didn’t work. If anything Burnett softened up O’Neal. The AB was locked on and there was nothing that he could have done about it. That’s a good feeling headed into a title match because O’Neal has no answer for the move. If Burnett can lock it in, he’s going to be the Alpha Champion and nothing would be sweeter than taking that title from Greg Johnson’s golden boy.
The thought of Greg Johnson makes Burnett’s blood boil. While Burnett is a nice guy, there is never going to be a moment where Burnett is ok with Johnson ever again. That bastard screwed him and he knows it. That’s why he has been hiding in O’Neal’s locker room ever since he made his debut. He knows that if he saw him in the halls in the back of a WCF event, Burnett would air out his dirty laundry in front of everyone. At least that’s how it plays out in Burnett’s head. He would yell at Johnson and let everyone know how badly he screwed him out of not only his money but out of his spot. He would make everyone see what type of snake Johnson is and then news would spread. Ruff Ryder gyms would close because everyone would know and Johnson would be left with nothing after Burnett beats O’Neal and takes the Alpha Title from him causing O’Neal to have a career nosedive. That’s the crazy scenario that Burnett dreams of.
What would really happen is that Burnett would confront Johnson and somehow he would turn everything that has happened on Burnett and then Burnett would just walk away. That’s not to say that Burnett is a wimp but causing a huge scene and ruining someone’s life isn’t Burnett’s style. Never has been and never will be. Burnett is more about grace, integrity and passion for this business and those are things that mean a lot to him. The truth of the matter is that the best way to get back at Johnson is to keep doing his thing. He never needed him anyway and that was no more evident than last night at Slam.
He’s definitely not going to need him next week. The card was announced a couple hours ago and he found out that it’s going to be a rough night. He is in a fatal fourway with John Gable, Jay West and Anon. Y. Mous. This is not going to be a walk in the park. All of these men are tough and Burnett knows that in order to win, he’s going to need to bring everything that he has. Hell John Gable is a legend. He has no idea who Anon. Y. Mous is. Jay West is a worthy competitor who has brought it in the past. While this match may be early in the night, it just may steal the show.
Burnett takes a sip of his Sprite and checks his black iPhone 7 at the time. It’s 10:45 AM and he knows that there’s only another hour left of the flight. Burnett moves a little bit to snuggle into his seat. There’s plenty of time to think of these things later. The more pressing thing is to lean back and enjoy the ride.
Dinner with a Friend
A couple of days have past and Burnett has taken one day for some rest and relaxation. While some that might mean the spa or a massage but for Burnett that meant he slept in and played Madden 17 on PS4 all day. There’s nothing more relaxing to Burnett than playing the Draft Champions mode and playing people online. Burnett isn’t really a trash talker, shocker, but he is the silent type that lets his playing do the talking. Just like in the ring.
He was enjoying another game when his phone began to ring. He looked down and saw that it was Stephen Anderson. The two talked for a minute and a dinner was planned before Burnett headed out on the road for some media and PR appearances before the next Slam. The place that Burnett and Anderson chose for dinner is very underwhelming to most but to small town Nebraska guys like them, Applebees is a solid place. It’s a place that they saw commercials for growing up and it’s a place that was in the big cities. To them chain restaurants were A plus and we pick up on the two of them enjoying some wings at a high top table next to the bar.
They both have buffalo sauce on their hands and face as they push through the plates of wings in front of them. We pick up on Burnett talking. “So I see that you beat Matt the other night in Nebraska City!”
“Yeah man! Ever since you left I have been going harder. I want the opportunity that you have. I have seen what you’ve done and I know that I can do that too.”
“I don’t disagree man. I wish you were up there! It would be nice to have someone to travel to all of these media events and appearances with. Right now it’s just me.”
“Hey better you than that douchebag O’Neal.”
“True. Did you see out match last week? That guy is the definition of a tool.”
“I know. In speaking of tools….have you seen Greg Johnson yet?”
“Seen? No. Heard? Yes. I’ve kept my distance.”
“Why!? You and I both know that you have enough ammo to make all the wrestler in that locker room hate him. His reputation would plummet!”
“Yeah but he already doesn’t have much of a reputation with Jason O’Neal being your number one guy.”
“That was supposed to be you you know.”
“But it’s not and I’m a better person and wrestler for it. I wouldn’t be in the WCF if I had stayed with him.”
“I don’t know about that.”
“I do. Think about it. I wouldn’t have all of the experience and I while I would not be as entitled as O’Neal, I would still believe that I was better than I am. All of the wars with you and the others in the backroads of this damn state made me the guy I am today. There is no other way to put it.”
“I get that but don’t you wonder how different things would be if you would have just stayed with him?”
“Yeah I wouldn’t be forced to sitting at dinner with you right now!”
Both men laugh and their good time is interrupted by Burnett’s phone ringing. Burnett pulls the phone from his right front jean pocket and sees that it’s his mother. He once again ignores the call. Anderson sees that it’s his Mom and looks at his friend. “Still not taking her calls?”
“Nope.”
“At some point you are going to have to talk to her.”
“Wrong. I don’t.”
“Dude...how long are you gonna let this go?”
“Forever. There is no reason for me to talk to her. She and the rest of the family didn’t believe in me and not only that, but they cut me off when I needed them most. You and I both know that the only reason they are calling me is because I debuted in the WCF and now they want me back in the fold. That’s not how families work.”
“That may be true but they are your family.”
“Not by blood. I owe them nothing.”
“Don’t talk like that man.”
Burnett doesn’t say anything and reaches for his Captain and coke. He needs another drink. Anderson can tell it’s time to change subjects but doesn’t know what to say. They both just drink in silence.
Momentum
It’s been a crazy week for me as this past Sunday at Slam, I saw plenty of new adversaries pop up. The obvious one would be Jason O’Neal whose Alpha Title I get a shot at. I know that a lot of you saw us be “tag team partners” this past week. I use that term very loosely. You can’t really call us partners when your partner is attacking you when you least expect it. It was evident from the very beginning that O’Neal was going to do whatever it took to make me look bad in this match and that pisses me off. What he doesn’t realize is that I take this sport seriously. I take what we do seriously. There is integrity when it comes to sports to giving everything you have and doing things the right way. Part of doing things the right way is trying to win your matches and not letting your partner down when you are in tag team matches. O’Neal let me down and tried to screw us. It’s only when he saw an opportunity to pick up the pin that he decided to try.
To some that may be enough for one night but apparently I attract losers because Sebastian Knight decided to get involved in my interview backstage. I don’t get it. Can’t I just have one moment? I was getting my first backstage interview live on TV! Can’t that just happen? Nope I have to have another person try to sneak in and make a name for themselves. I don’t blame Knight in that regard. Pro wrestling is a dog eat dog world and you have to do whatever it takes to make a name for yourself. Your name is half the battle and he’s just doing what he has to. It’s just frustrating to work hard and get a win and not be able to enjoy it. Well hopefully I get another chance this Sunday at Slam when I fight in this Fatal Fourway.
I have three excellent opponents this Sunday and all have had some shining moments here in the WCF. The first is Jay West. Jay is scrappy and he gives it his all. This is no more evident than our last two events. He was in two different battle royals and was a fraction of an inch of winning both of them. He was the last one eliminated in each and plenty of times he could have been eliminated but he held on. That take heart and I respect guys with heart. Where I’m from and the places I’ve wrestled, you’ve got to have heart in order to survive. That’s what grinding in the smaller companies and all the little towns gets you. You learn that and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.
The other thing about Jay that I need to be prepped for is an aerial attack. I haven’t really faced anyone with an aerial attack since I debuted here and I’ve seen some of his moves. They’re impressive but I’ve been scouting him. If I can get on him early take out his legs, I think I’ve got him under control. I haven’t really seen anything besides those aerial moves so the goal is going to be to take him out early. That Terminal Velocity move is deadly but I don’t think it’s anything that I can’t avoid.
I have respect for what you are trying to do Jay but the one hole in your game that I can see is that you are a one trick pony and that to me means you’re lazy. A true master of this trade keeps working and learning because people can figure you out. I feel like people are figuring you out Jay and I just hope that I’m the next person to do just that.
The next person that we have is Anon. Y. Mous. His name says it all. We have no idea who this guy is. Is he a new guy? Is he a disguised returning star? Who the hell is he? That has worked to his advantage and I literally have to be prepared for anything. He’s the exact opposite to Jay West. West is predictable and he is definitely not that.
The one move that he has that I have always had to look out for is that superkick. Everyone uses the superkick and you would think that people would have caught onto it by now but people keep getting kicked in the face. If I am not aware than I will get kicked in the face and I don’t like getting kicked in the face. Well most people don’t but I especially don’t! Anyways that’s that but the gist of it is is that I need to stay on top of this guy.
The weird part is that I don’t know if it’s one guy. He keeps saying we are anonymous and we are coming. Who is we? Is it a different guy each time he dons that mask? Now that’s something I haven’t really thought about. What if it’s a different guy every time? That could explain that superkick. Every guy has one like I said before! Ok I don’t need to start down this rabbit hole or I’ll be here thinking about all of the different anonymous conspiracy theories all afternoon and nobody wants that.
Last but certainly not least is John Gable. Gable is the man. I have been watching Gable for years. He has done it all. He’s held titles, he’s taken the best out and he has been one of the brightest stars this company has ever seen. I remember watching Gable from my dorm room in college. I have seen this man do so many different things. He is one of the reasons that I wanted to be a wrestler. I saw him tear down the house on multiple pay per views and I know that he brings it each and every night. The one thing that stands out is his reign as the Cinema Champion. It probably was one of the most exciting things I’ve seen in the history of this business.
I’m trying not to freak out about being in this match with John Gable but it’s just so exciting. He’s the type of guy that I was looking forward to facing when I came here and he proved that he still has it when he won his match at One. I am not gonna lie, I was watching that match in the back and rooting for him. It was like I was back in the dorm room all over again. Before any of you say anything I do want to say that I will be bringing everything I have against him on Sunday. It all comes back to that integrity stuff I was talking about earlier. Plus I want to give Gable everything I have on Sunday. I want to see where I stack up to him right now and see if I can get by him.
To say that this Fatal Fourway is going to bring the house down is an understatement. We all bring different things to the table and I cannot wait to see how it is going to shake down! I just hope you all enjoy it. I know that sometimes matches can disappoint but I want to exceed all of your expectations. I want all four of us to bring you all something that you are going to remember for days to come. That is what you deserve and that is what I am striving for. Not only that but I need to win this match. I need to keep up the momentum as I head towards my impending date with Jason O’Neal. I need to keep pressing the action and I need to make sure he knows that I am not someone to take lightly. Whatever happens I can’t wait to see all of you at Slam!
A Hopeful Meeting
Adam Burnett is sitting outside of Seth’s office that he has set up in the Wells Fargo Center. His heart is beating a little faster as he thinks about the upcoming meeting with Seth. He wants so bad for this meeting to go well. This meeting is his chance to show Seth what Stephen Anderson has got. He is holding a DVD of Stephen Anderson’s best moments and moves and he can only hope that this is good enough to get him a chance.
Burnett thinks about how much better it would be to have his best friend here with him. This has been both of their dreams. They both wanted to be here and Burnett thinks that it is only fair to have them both here. Now they can have that chance if this meeting goes well. Burnett can feel the pressure because this means he has all of Anderson’s hope and dreams on him to sell him to Seth.
Burnett also knows that this all comes down to what state of mind Seth is in. This can either go really well….or it can go really bad. Burnett closes his eyes and sees his vision of him and Anderson on top of this company. They are both in the ring holding up championship belts and the crowd is loving it.
His thoughts are interrupted by Seth opening to door to the office and motioning for him to come inside. Burnett takes a deep breath and walks in the door.
