10AM
Matt is sitting on his desk with many large pills of documents in front of him. He is signing lots of them and others he is just reading and putting it in the trash can. His secretary knocked on the door but he was really focused so he couldn’t hear it. She knocked one more time and Matt looked at her and signed for her to get in.
Secretary: Sir, a man named Jackson White wants to talk to you. He’s saying he’s a friend of yours.
Matt’s focus on those documents vanished. He was afraid Jackson was going to hurt him. He knew how sometimes his friend was a little psychotic. He started to have nervous twitches. He was sweating and his mind blocked. What should he do?
Secretary: Sir?
Matt tightened his tie, cleaned his suit, combed up and coughed.
Matt: Let him in.
Jackson entered Matt’s office and he quickly got up from his seat. They stared at each other for a few seconds in complete silence. What was Jackson going to do? Was he going to punch Matt until he died? Was Jackson going to rat and tell the police who he really was?
Jackson: Hi Matt.
Jackson reached out his hand to Matt to give him a handshake.
Matt was confused. What the fuck was going on? A few weeks ago at Sarah’s funeral Jackson was threatening him and now he was being polite? That was strange.
Matt: Hello. What brings you here?
Jackson: Look… I’ll be direct and honest. I will never forgive you for what you’ve done. NEVER. You make me sick. However, I know you want to bring The NY Kings down and I want to find out who killed my father. We need each other.
Matt: What do you suggest we do then?
Jackson: I say we make a deal. I’ll be your personal security or whatever Doug is and I’ll help you catching them. But unless we are in danger, you don’t kill anyone before I ask them some questions regarding my father’s murderer. I guess you have some place quiet and far away…
Matt: Yes, I have, why?
Jackson: Maybe we can catch some and bring them there so I can interrogate them.
Matt: Torture them, you mean.
Jackson: If you prefer to call it that, then yeah, to torture them.
Matt: But Jackson… Let me remind you of something. Who was there for you when you were younger and everyone messed with you?
Jackson: I don’t fucking care Matt.
Matt: I defended you when everyone was against you. You were the weirdest kid in the entire school. You were regularly bullied and I stood by your side. Besides, you made mistakes too in case you don’t remember.
Jackson: What are you talking about?
Matt: When we were 15 you missed a few classes because you were smoking joints with that kid… What was his name? Danny, wasn’t it? You lied to your parents. They found out but I helped you and I made them think it was all a lie.
Jackson: Yeah, I remember it.
Matt: Do you think I wanted Sarah to die? I’m a mess Jackson! I’ve been sleeping like 1 or 2 hours per day. I’ve been having nightmares about Sarah, about the NY Kings and about you. I dream about you murdering me.
Jackson: I’m not a fucking monster like you.
Matt: And yet you will do whatever it takes to find out the truth about your father’s murderer. Doesn’t that make you a hypocrite?
Jackson: How do you dare to call me that? You’re a liar. You’re hidden behind the corporative figure you seem to be. Mr. Matt Carter, vice-president of Carter Industries. Bullshit. 99% of the people in New York City don’t know the truth about you. You lie to your family, to your friends, to your employees. You even lied to me! You say you were always there for me when we were younger and you’re right but as we grew up… You only screwed up everything. Sarah is dead because of you. Many people are dead because of you. You had a choice to make and you chose your precious gang. You defined your priorities. You could have left your gang behind and save your wife.
Matt: Are you dumb, Jackson? Are you innocent? It doesn’t look like you’ve grown up. What do you think Jordan was going to do if I ended The Dragons? He was going to kill Sarah anyway! Do you think he wants peace? He only wants New York City all for himself. He wants to profit around the entire city. He’s a worse man than me, Jackson. I was trying to save Sarah and to eradicate an evil man from this world. I was doing a good thing.
Jackson: Fuck this. I won’t argue anymore with you. I came here to make a deal with you, do you want it or not?
Matt sat on his desk thinking about it for a few seconds. He stared at Jackson with a thoughtful expression and then got up and gave a firm handshake to him.
Matt: You got yourself a deal.
Restaurant in New York City
1PM
Jackson and his girlfriend Jennifer are having lunch. Jackson is really quiet and Jennifer is getting angry. He changed since his cousin died. He always had a dark side but now Jennifer can’t see any light inside Jackson’s soul.
Jennifer: So, what do you think about your opponent for your next match?
Jackson: I don’t fucking care about my next match.
Jennifer: What?
Jackson: You heard me.
Jennifer: Yes, but I didn’t understand.
Jackson: What do you need me to explain? I don’t give a shit for my next match.
Jennifer: Why?
Jackson: Why? Because I’ve been giving my best since I joined this company. Except for that period that I was absent I have been trying really hard to improve my ring skills. Finally, I was getting pushed. I almost won the Ultimate Ninth Battle. I was so close… But it didn’t matter. I had a title shot. My teammates failed and I didn’t win the match. But then Seth put me on the main-event. I was so excited… Dune and I are one hell of a team. We won the fucking match. I thought I was getting a title shot or a number one contender match for some title… Instead, they put me on a meaningless match. Do you know why I lost that match honey? Because I didn’t care if I win or if I lost. That’s why I left DRG. I am not a good at fighting with a random wrestler on my corner. Teaming up with Dune is different though. We always do some good shit on the ring.
Jennifer: This week you’re on a singles match against Caliban.
Jackson: Seriously? They make me fight another WCF veteran? Well, I should be expecting that. Yet I don’t understand why the obsession of putting me against experienced wrestlers. I am young but I am intelligent, determined, hard-worker and strong. Caliban is weak. He has been for a longer time than me in this company and he hasn’t won a single’s title. He has only been successfully on a tag-team career. Do you know why? Because he depends too much on the others. He thinks that just because he has been in two different countries he has grown up? Ridiculous. I bet he sees his wife as his mom. She prepares breakfast for him, she cooks him lunch and dinner, she makes his bed and she buys him stuff. He’s an absent-minded that seems he’s constantly taking acids. He had lots of trouble to beat Ultimate Destroyer! That guy is probably one of the most awful wrestlers I’ve ever seen!
Jennifer: So you’ll try to win your next match…
Jackson: I don’t know if I should train to it though. What’s the point? Winning and losing it’s the same thing. WCF’s top people don’t like me. I am a guy from an unknown country in many parts of the world. There are people who think Portugal is a part of Spain! Do you think it’s good for business to have a Portuguese dude representing an American wrestling company?
Jennifer: I don’t think you should see it that way… You just have to show your talent on every single match. It doesn’t matter if it is against Biohazard or the WCF World Champion, you have to proof them that you’re consistent. You were so demotivated on your match against the Angels of Death… That was a test for you. If you would carry your team and pick the win I am sure you would be getting a number one contender match or a title show this week. But no, you preferred to sit back and watch your career fading away.
Jackson: My career is not fading away! I’ll show you it is not. I’ll show everyone in WCF that “The Fenix” is still one of the best. I’ll beat Caliban just like I defeated FPV, Remus Micayle and John Barber at XIII. Just like I survived against Corey Black and Zombie McMorris on the Ultimate Ninth Battle Royal. WCF needs fresh blood, not old one! If you take a look at the current champions, just Torture and Jonny Fly are WCF veterans. There is no place for Caliban in WCF! His time is up! My advice to him is that he takes a course in philosophy so he can be constantly thinking. I bet he had to design a complex strategy to beat Ultimate Destroyer on his return! He’s such a clown.
Jennifer: That’s how I like to see you! I hate when you’re down.
Jackson: That happens a lot. I’m sorry.
Jennifer: But you can’t let death steal your happiness!
Jackson: Death is a Dementor. Every time She appears and steal someone from me a piece of my soul gets dark. I can’t avoid it.
Jennifer: I didn’t know you liked Harry Potter.
Jackson: I used to watch it when I was a kid.
Jennifer: Me too! We have to do a Harry Potter Marathon some day! Look, I’ve got to get to work. See you tomorrow?
Jackson: Yes, I have some stuff to do too.
They kissed and left the restaurant.
Anthony Palmer’s clinic
3PM
Jackson: I don’t know why I keep coming here.
Anthony: You were making progresses but something happened and then we came back to the beginning… You were starting to have a positive attitude and you were happier. What happened? Do you want to talk about that?
Jackson: I’d rather not.
Anthony: It’s bad for you to keep things for yourself. You can’t close yourself from the outside world.
Jackson: Why? Why can’t I keep things to myself? Why do I have to tell people how I feel?
Anthony: Do you remember the last time we talked? You reached the conclusion that the obsession with death and with your father is harmful for you. What changed?
Jackson: If you remember our last talk you’d know what happened.
Anthony: No… Don’t tell me that…
Jackson nodded to Anthony and his face was white as chalk. He recovered himself and crossed his leg, taking a few notes on a small notepad.
Anthony: Do you want to talk about your cousin?
Jackson: There’s nothing to talk about. She died. Death stole someone from me again.
Anthony: Look, you can’t be so egocentric. I am sure you were not the only one affected by her death.
Jackson got up and punched a painting that was on the wall. The glass shattered on his hands and he started to bleed. He screamed continuously for a few seconds and then turned to Anthony, talking really loud.
Jackson: I’m done with people I care about dying. I don’t want to see any more corpses. I don’t want to watch someone I love’s eyes closing as his heart stops beating. I’m sick of playing with death! I didn’t ask to be put on this miserable world! Can I be… unborn? Because I don’t want to die too. I just wanted not exist anymore, that would be perfect. I’m sick of feeling my soul fading away. If I continue to be as unfortunate as I am being on the past few years I will end up feeling nothing. I don’t think that’s a good thing Anthony, do you think? Do you realize why I prefer to keep things for myself? Because I am a mess Anthony! I am a fucking disaster!
Even my wrestling career is horrible. I reached the bottom of the pit. I am facing a recently returned wrestler that no one gives a shit about! He was a tag-team division wrestler back in the days and he is just an average wrestler. When he returned, Seth put him facing The Ultimate Destroyer. I bet he was hoping a huge reception by the fans, he imagined Kyle Steel screaming from the bottom of his lungs his name as the crowd gave him a huge pop and Zach Davis, Freddy Whoa and Gravedigger were praising him. Guess what happened? The arena was filled with indifference. There were people yawning, others stretching their arms, kids asking their parents who that guy was. Most of the parents didn’t know who Caliban is. Nobody does! Because nobody gives a shit about him. After almost beating Thomas Bates on the Ultimate Ninth Battle Royal, after almost winning the Trios Title, after winning a Slam main-event I am facing another insane man.
Yeah, I may be facing a dark phase of my life and my brain may not always work right, but there are people in WCF who are completely crazy. Caliban is one of them. Dude is constantly talking to himself. Or is he talking to an imaginary friend like Mikey eXtreme or Marc Mayhem? Guess what, I’ve already had matches with both of them and I won. Can you predict what’s going to happen when Caliban, the guy who only talks to himself, and I meet in the ring? Yeah, I’ll beat the crap out of him and the referee will raise my hand just like it happened when I defeated Marc Mayhem a few months ago and just like I defeated Thomas Bates and Mikey eXtreme on Slam’s main-event.
But Anthony, there’s an explanation for why people don’t care about Caliban’s returning. When I returned, and I was absent for way lesser time than he was, I shocked everyone because nobody was expecting it. I entered the ring with a hoodie on my head, covering my identity, I caused suspense, I got everyone thinking “who is it?” and then I revealed myself. People were not expecting it. After that, on my first match after coming back to WCF, I defeated Gemini Battle when everyone bet against me. I make a difference and I surprise every single WCF’s fan. What did Caliban prepare for his return? Nothing. There was just announced that the Slam’s opener match would be Caliban against Ultimate Destroyer. What was he expecting? Of course nobody gives a shit about that match! The thing is, the result of the match was obvious. Of course Caliban had what it takes to beat Ultimate Destroyer. I just didn’t think it would be so difficult for him to beat him.
Maybe I am being too dramatic. Maybe this match-up is easier than I thought… I have been successful against older wrestlers. Yeah, Oblivion pinned me last week, but he’s a former World Champion. Besides, that was more like a handicap match because my partners didn’t do anything on that match. I just had a bad week. That was all. From now on, I’ll show Seth that I deserve more on this company. I’ll show everyone that I am not satisfied with my current position in WCF. I’ll destroy every single challenge I have and I’ll win titles. I’ll be praised by every fucking stupid fan on the entire world because I’ll be the first Portuguese champion on WCF. Girls will offer their pussy to me like I was Cristiano Ronaldo or Leonel Messi, kids will convince their parents to buy them tickets to watch me fighting and every Indie wrestler will be inspired by me to be professional wrestlers. I am “The Fenix” but I am also the future of WCF. NO! I am also the future of WRESTLING! The time for me to taste the flavor of justice is coming. I can feel it.
Anthony Palmer stayed motionless. He wanted to say something, but he wasn’t able to speak. Jackson was heavy-breathing. They stood still staring at each other with serious expressions on their faces. Anthony Palmer was happy though. He managed to make Jackson to tell him how he really felt. Jackson was happy too. Palmer helped him believe in himself. He was sure he was going to beat Caliban and that a WCF title is reserved for him to held.
Highland Park
5PM
There was a lovely afternoon in New York. At Highland Park there were lots of kids riding their bikes and there were couples walking in the middle of the trees and others sitting in benches. Jackson was sitting on one bench reading a newspaper. He was wearing a blue hat and sunglasses. After a few seconds he peaked over the newspaper to see a man sitting on a bench not far away from him but not very close. He was watching the detective Charles Robinson, the one that left his father’s murderer’s investigation.
Jackson (thinking): I hate detectives.
Charles seemed to be waiting for something or someone. Jackson was getting impatient because he was there for like 15 minutes. Jackson also hates to wait for things. The detective checked his watch and started to shake his right leg. It looked like that Robinson was tired of waiting too. However, a man in a suit appeared. He sat right next to Charles Robinson as Jackson tried to figure out who that man was. He peaked again over the newspaper but now for a while longer. He semi-closed his eyes to get a more focused vision on the guy and then he recognized him. It was Mr. Carter, Matt’s father and owner of Carter’s industries.
Jackson: What the fuck is he doing here?
At the same time Jackson said this, an old woman was passing by.
Old woman: Watch your language!
Jackson just moved his lips and apologized without making any sound as the old woman complained about Jackson to herself. He didn’t want them to know he was watching them. However, when he looked again at the bench they were gone. Jackson looked around thinking where they may have gone. Did they notice he was near them? After taking a few looks on his left and right side, Jackson realized they were walking near a fountain. Jackson followed them for a few seconds but then they stopped. Mr. Carter gave Charles a handshake and left, entering in an expensive car. Doug was holding the door and opened it so Mr. Carter could get into the car. Charles looked around like he knew he was being watched but Jackson quickly turned his face to the other side, making sure the detective didn’t see him.
Jackson (thinking): What is going on? Charles acts strange after I interrogate him about my dad’s murderer and now he meets Matt’s father? Is Mr. Carter connected to my dad’s assassination? But why would he want my father dead? I have to get some answers.
Mr. Carter’s car went away and the detective left the park. Jackson followed him to an empty street. There was nobody near them so Jackson thought it was a good time to act. He put on a mask and gloves, ran towards the detective and pushed him, making him fall to the ground. He then dragged him to an alley and pushed him against a wall while grabbing his neck.
Jackson: I won’t hurt you unless you answer all my questions with the truth and nothing but the truth.
Charles: What do you want? Money? Do you know that I am a detective? You’re in big trouble if something bad happens to me!
Jackson: Shut the fuck up and answer me. Why were you meeting with Carter Industries’ owner?
Charles: What? Why do you want to know?
Jackson: Answer me!
At that moment, a woman passed by them. She stopped and started to scream. Jackson looked to her and the distraction was enough for Charles to kick Jackson on his balls and run away. The woman imitated the detective and escaped too. “The Fenix” stayed down with his testicles in pain.
Jackson: I will find the truth about that coward. I will find the truth about everything.
Jackson looked up, to his father.
Jackson: I won’t let you down dad, I promise. Justice is coming.
