The scene opens to the exterior of the Bates Gym of Huntsville, Alabama. The parking lot is full, and a WAFF News van and a WZYP Radio van are parked near the front door. Crowds of people are pouring into the gym, where two Huntsville Police Officers guard the door. The camera closes in on the entrance, and struggles with the crowd to enter. As the camera finally makes it into the gym, they are guided to seating near the ring. WAFF rookie news reporter Amber Rhule steps in front of the camera with a microphone. She fixes her blond hair quick before nodding to the cameraman.
She smiles as she begins to speak, “Amber Rhule with WAFF News 48. I am on location at the Bates Gym as we await the important announcement from the gym’s owner, legendary professional wrestler Andre Bates. It is expected that he will be announcing the signing of his son to the Wrestling Championship Federation.”
The lights dim down as “Click, Click, Boom” by Saliva blares over the PA system. From an open door covered with an open curtain comes Andre Uriel Bates to a loud and positive reaction. Andre is simply wearing blue jeans with a black t-shirt with the single word “BATES” in bold letters across the front. The giant takes the few steps towards the ring, and easily climbs over the top rope. A staff member hands him a microphone, which he grabs and holds for a moment as the crowd quiets.
When the giant speaks, his deep voice and Delta accent is as thick as ever, “I want to thank each of you for coming today. As promised, I have some very important news for you today.”
A loud pop from the fans cause Andre to lower the microphone and smile as he waits yet again.
“When I started wrestling back in ’92 I had no idea how things would play out. Sure, I knew my size would play into it. I knew that people would be interested in at the very least seeing a seven foot nine inch giant storm into the ring. Little did I know that I would be a part of one of the greatest tag teams of my day, and one of the most successful stables in professional wrestling history. For thirteen years I had the pleasure of standing in this ring with some of the greatest wrestlers I’ve ever seen. I poured my heart and soul into this business, and this business gave me a lot in return.”
The crowd begins clapping, causing the giant to lower the microphone again and wipe a tear from his eye. He walks around the ring a moment before finally returning to face the cameras. He raises his microphone again and continues.
“I am pleased to announce that the Bates name will continue in professional wrestling. As of today, my son Thomas Uriel Bates has been signed to wrestle with the World Championship Federation!”
Loud cheers and claps from the fans interrupt yet again. Though this is a simple gym with local fans gathered for a press release, it sounds like a fully packed arena.
“Without further ado, please allow me to introduce; from Huntsville, Alabama, standing at six foot nine inches and weighing in at four hundred and thirty pounds; Thomas Uriel Bates!”
“Midnight Rider” by the Allman Brothers Band plays over the PA system as the curtains covering the door opens up. Stepping through the door frame is a large individual with short brown hair and short brown beard. He wears black jean pants with black wrestling boots and a black “BATES” shirt just like his father. Though not as tall as his father, he strikes an intimidating image. Thomas makes his short walk to the ring, and like his father easily climbs over the top rope. Andre hands him the microphone and Thomas turns to face the cameras. Like father like son, he speaks with a deep voice and Mississippi Delta Southern Accent.
“Thank you, thank you all very much.”
The crowd remains cheering and clapping, leaving the new wrestler to pause a moment before continuing.
“Thank you. I am looking forward to wrestling with the Wrestling Championship Federation. After speaking to Mr. Lerch earlier today, I am anxious to begin wrestling as soon as possible. I am more excited to continue the legacy set forth by my father, and the rest of my family.”
The crowd again claps.
“Since I was about fifteen years old I told my father I wanted to wrestle. I studied his moves, Scott’s moves, even my Uncle Alex’s moves. I can still remember coming to the gym with my father and lifting the weights, punching the backs, doing everything I could so that one day I would be just like him. I joined my high school wrestling team, then to college. When I graduated I came back here to officially train under my father. It was one of the happiest days of my life.”
Thomas lowers the microphone and embraces his father briefly. The crowd cheers and claps again, but grows silent when the rookie continues.
“When I get to the WCF, I will be starting a new era. Like my father before me, I intend to dominate the industry. I will carve out a name for myself, just like he did. I know I have a long way to go, but I intend to eventually become the WCF World Champion!”
Andre approaches his son and pats him on the back before taking the microphone for himself.
“I believe we have time for a few short questions.”
Hands shoot up fast, and Andre quickly eyes the WAFF reporter Amy Rhule. He points to her and she stands up quickly.
“Amy Rhule with WAFF News 48: My question is for Thomas. When can we expect to see you in the ring?”
Thomas takes the microphone from his father, “After talking with Mr. Lerch today he assured me it would be soon, perhaps even the next scheduled live event. I don’t know if that means at Timebomb, but I’m thinking it will be the first non-pay per view event.”
More hands shoot up, and Thomas points to the WZYP team. A man stands up, “Jason Hurley with 104.3 WZYP. Will you be joining any tag team in the WCF?”
Thomas shakes his head, “No, I have no intention on joining a tag team, or stable at this time. That may change though, if the writers at WCF decide to go a different route.”
Again, hands shoot up. Andre points to another news team and another gentleman stands up, “Bob Wiers with WAAY News 31. My question is for Andre. Will you be returning to the ring in any capacity now that your son is wrestling?”
Andre takes the microphone from Thomas, “No, I have no intention on joining the WCF in any function. I’m afraid my poor knees won’t let me wrestle anymore, and besides; it’s Thomas’ time to shine now.”
Hands shoot up yet again, but Andre motions for them to lower them.
“I’m afraid that’s all the time we’ve got for now. We’ve got a busy schedule; I’ve got to get back to training some of my other talents, and Thomas here has a plane to catch.”
The crowd begins clapping and cheering once again as Andre and Thomas once again shares an embrace. Andre raises his son’s hand up, indicating the future which may come.
