Hello once again WCF Universe, it is I, the one, the only, the most unbiased and honest reporter in all of wrestling news, the Ace Reporter Scoops Callahan. Last week saw the return of the single most interesting wrestling news column in history, the much beloved "The Weekly Scoop". You sent me all kinds of reviews, not a single one of them negative, and demanded that I never again leave you because you need you some Scoops. Well rest your pretty little heads my faithful Scoopers, I am back with the 2nd issue of the revamped "The Daily Scoop" and coming off WAR you can bet this is a must-read. So let's jump right in!
- WAR opened with a match that the Ace Reporter was strongly disinterested with going into the night and it didn't even try to prove me wrong, Seth Lerch going one on one with Torture in a No Disqualifications Match. Well, one on one is a bit of lie because, as I predicted last week, this match was full of relics from the past and new people nobody recognizes. To be specific, we saw 9 different men interfere over the course of the match. 9, ladies and gentlemen, you read that correctly. Lerch's 4 hired goons from the developmental system first appeared to beat down Torture before Chris Avery, Ryan Daniels and Tank Reaper came out to fight them off. For those of you new to WCF, don't feel bad if none of those 3 names sound familiar, there's only a slim number of older WCF fans that remember these nobodies. Later on, Rick Mad proved that he's still not dead as he made an appearance before finally Chase Jackson beat the hell out of Torture and allowed Seth to get the win. If that sounds convoluted and weird, then you're normal.
- The 2nd match of the evening saw Jonny Fly taking on Corey Black in what could have been the match of the night (to find out if I labeled it as such, keep on reading!), with the exception of the WAR Match which can never really be overshadowed due to the sheer size and amount of action. This match had absolutely everything, from a plethora of false finishes, the all-important (but mostly lost in this day and age) art of storytelling and emotion. All of the god damn emotion, readers. Back and forth went these two former friends and allies, throwing every big move in their respective arsenals at each other, keeping fans on their feet and glued to the action in the ring. There were times you wanted to boo every dastardly thing that Fly wanted to do, but then just as quick you were in awe of the athleticism he was still able to display. You wanted to cry when Corey Black was beaten and bloodied, staring up at Fly and apologizing, but then you wanted to cheer when finally the match was over and the respect that these two have for each other finally trumped the bad blood and they were able to make up. Big points for the return of Steve Orbit and the rarely seen Jeff Purse at the end for a (final?) Pantheon reunion before Jonny Fly was marched off by police. We'll have to see where that leads, but for now we can just enjoy that final shot of all 4 men reunited and feeling oh so good.
- The final match before the main event was a triple threat match that featured John Rabid and Teo Del Sol both challenging Steven Singh for the WCF World Title. In a rather weird situation, just before the match actually began, Seth Lerch came out and forced Rabid to defend his WCF Television Title against Johnny Chinlock. Seth demanded the match happen due to the rules about the TV Title being defended each week, but it was obviously an attempt by Seth to screw over Rabid and weaken him going into the World Title Match, luckily Rabid was able to quickly retain. Finally, we got to the match and itself and my prediction from last week that this match could be the match of the night was justified. It was full of top-notch action that left me wondering multiple times how it would finally end. And at long last John Rabid was finally able to win the one belt that had eluded him for years in spectacular fashion.
- And then came the WAR Match and honestly it would take me forever to go over every detail of a match that featured a grand total of 55 men and women competing for the title of WAR Winner and a spot in the main event of One. The highlights included multiple wrestlers being forced into shark cages that were dangling over the ring, Gravedigger eliminating 7 men before finally being eliminated last and coming up just short of being only the 2nd man to win multiple WAR matches, Anon Y. Mous being revealed to be Roy Speede and the brief returns of Gemini Battle and members of Zero Tolerance. In the end, it was Sidney J. Warwick, the WCF Omega Champion, that was able to outlast the entire field and win WAR. SJW was a definite darkhorse pick for many going into the match and he was able to prove that he is in fact legitimate.
Scoops' Overall Grade Of WAR XVI: 8.5/10. On a night full of highlights and amazing action, you'd be hard-pressed to pick what was truly the match of the night. The WAR Match is consistently a top candidate for Match Of The Year because it is a spectacle that needs to be seen to be believed. But as grand as it was, Jonny Fly and Corey Black were able to put on a match that was more than just a match, it was more like a show. Two wrestlers playing their roles and holding the audience in the palms of their hands with their storytelling and the range of emotions they both showed. And the World Title Match was amazing in its own right, giving the WCF Universe a World Champion that they've wanted to see for some time now as John Rabid has been clawing his way up for years. But with all of that good, I have to take points away for the travesty that was Seth versus Torture. Last week I did not hold back in my criticism of this match and I will not back down from my statements. This match was a mess and a joke and frankly it did not belong on this Pay Per View, in fact it barely belongs on an episode of Slam. I get that Seth and Torture's feud is big to some of the older fans, a glimpse back to WCF's glory days when Torture was the main event and Seth was seemingly in his back pocket and how now their relationship has soured greatly. But to water down this Pay Per View with a match that was never going to be a fair match, and it was obvious that was going to be the case to anyone that's ever watched wrestling, is doing the fans a great disservice. For shame.
Match: Stephen Singh & Ethan King versus John Rabid & Sidney J. Warwick
Scoops' Prediction: Radid and SJW get the win despite constant shenanigans.
Match: Kyle Kemp versus Teo del Sol versus Oblivion
Scoops' Prediction: Teo Del Sol rebounds from an unsuccessful attempt to win the World Title with a nice win here.
Match: Johnny Alpha & Leon Hayze versus Agimat & Luke Force
Scoops' Prediction: Luke Force brings it again tonight after a rather good showing in the WAR Match and carries his team to the win.
Match: Adam Young & Bomber versus Petrov & Hajeet
Scoops' Prediction: Petrov and Hajeet, possibly the oddest team that still manages to work well together, will get the win.
Match: Matthew Drake versus Trey Carter versus Jay West
Scoops' Prediction: Matthew Drake continues to rack up wins as he awaits his title match against the Alpha Champion in the near future.
Match: Mark Hooker versus Hank Herron versus Gemu
Scoops' Prediction: Hank Herron comes out on top over the 2 newcomers.
Let's take just a quick second to see how my predictions from last week panned out:
Match: Jonny Fly versus Corey Black
Prediction: Corey Black
Actual Winner: Corey Black
Match: Torture versus Seth Lerch
Prediction: Torture
Actual Winner: Seth Lerch
Match: John Rabid versus Steven Singh versus Teo Del Sol
Prediction: John Rabid
Actual Winner: John Rabid
Match: WAR Match
Predictions:
Winner: Andre Holmes
Runner-Up: Kevin Bishop
Third Place: Odin Balfore
Most Eliminations: Odin Balfore (6)
Best Showing By Someone That Doesn't Place In Top 3: Luke Force (4 eliminations including a big name, ends up placing 5th)
Actual Results:
Winner: Sidney J. Warwick
Runner-Up: Gravedigger
Third Place: Ethan King
Most Eliminations: Gravedigger (7)
I got all Top 3 places wrong and also who'd have the most eliminations, but I'm giving myself a pat on the back because I correctly guessed that Luke Force would have 4 eliminations (although he was not Top 5) and he did indeed have a great showing.
Now to be clear, this is only my Top 5 for this past week, going strictly off who impressed me the most at WAR XVI. To see my Top 5 Power Rankings, scroll down to the next section and see who I think are the 5 best in WCF overall.
5. Ethan King - The current WCF Hardcore Champion had a tremendous WAR showing, eliminating 5 men en route to a 3rd place finish.
4. Gravedigger - 7, yes 7, eliminations in the WAR Match before ending up as the last man eliminated. This ties the record set by Odin Balfore for eliminations in a single WAR Match.
3. Steven Singh - Lost the WCF World Title in a triple threat match at WAR, but still has a rematch clause that he's sure to use soon.
2. Sidney J. Warwick - The WCF Omega Champion eliminated 3 men before ultimately winning the WCF War Match as a darkhorse. Gets a World Title shot at One.
1. John Rabid - The WCF Television Champion is now also the WCF World Champion after ending the reign of Steven Singh.
This is where I will be telling you who I believe are the current 5 best wrestlers in all of the WCF, based on their position on the card, how hot or cold they are during the past few weeks and if they did something that impressed me.
5. Gravedigger - The WCF People's Champion moves up into the Top 5 over Luke Force due to his historic WAR showing.
4. Ethan King - Has been terrific lately and his WAR showing proved he's a player in WCF but stays at 4th for now just because of who's ahead of him.
3. Steven Singh - Lost the WCF World Title and slips 1 spot, but with a World Title rematch looming and a reign that had it's moments he stays for now.
2. Sidney J. Warwick - Moves into the 2nd spot after winning WAR, continues to solidify his status as one of the best rookies WCF has seen since guys like Joey Flash, Dune, Odin Balfore and Jonny Fly made their debuts.
1. John Rabid - Dominant WCF Television Champion adds WCF World Title to his collection. How can he not be number 1?
Set Steve from Pennsylvania
Question: Y u so gay?
Scoops' Take: I see Seth Lerch is sour over my reactions to his win at WAR.
From: Brett from Wisconsin
Question: Is Sidney J. Warwick a legitimate threat to win the WCF World Title or is he another David Sanchez that wins some big matches but then chokes when he gets his big chance?
Scoops' Take: Sanch won some big matches, but not even he could win WAR. SJW is legit and he's as much a threat as anyone.
