On one hand "IT" attempts to use direct-to-cinemax Uwe Bolll techniques to befuddle his opponents with hackened, almost quaint attempts at horror. While beneath the low budget surface there is a complex web of influences that would surgest that the whole endeavour is a sharp commentary on the absurdness of professional wrestling, a joke that might be just too eccentric and insular for IT's own good. For instance, did anyone pick up on the reference to Lyndsay Anderson's follow up to the classic British comedy, "IF", called "O Lucky Man!"? This intertextual maze is walled by a nod to H.G. Wells's "The Island of Dr. Moreau", both forming the backbone of Thespblivion's verbal assault; one that's unfortunately held back by a stilted and wooden performance delivered by IT through a juvenile tirade of caps lock rage, removing all sense of théâtre de l'absurde from the proceedings. A shame, as there was a real chance to produce a quality gem here; unfortunately transmogrified into fool's gold, a good idea, slipping through the hands of one incapable of living up to IT's own vision. 5/10 |
