“So we're going to find him then?” Asked Ashbury as they stood in the meeting room at the magical, mystical, family friendly isle of Kem. He was looking at Amy as he said this, who was busy looking at a map on the bank of computer screens in front of them.
“We are, I'm just puzzled as to why he'd go back to Slam so shortly after escaping here. Whatever has possession of him really hates Bonnie.” Replied Amy, not looking up from the map. “For what it's worth, he was last sighted here. This is a problem” She tapped on the screen and looked at Ashbury now.
“Why is it?” He asked
“Mainly because that's where Bonnie said she was going to be tonight before she drove to Indiana.” She looked at him in concern. “Ashbury, call LGB, we'll need his help on this.”
“OK, no problems. What about Bonnie?” He was already half way through the door when he asked this.
“I'm giving her a call now, we'll ask her to meet up. He's going to go for her, so it's best we're together. Look for him with more people, he might come to us for her, kill two birds and all that.” Ashbury nodded, as Amy dialled Bonnie.
“I'll fire up the van” grunted Slashalot as he headed out.
The “van” it should be explained was what they people of Kem called the cargo plane they had acquired one year and kept in one of the island's hangars. Inside the plane there was a games room, a luxurious and spacious cabin, decked with a gloriously full bar. The cargo area held an assortment of crates and a 2015 custom GMC van, based on the Savana chassis. It had tinted windows, a dragon based decal and the interior had every single gadget you could imagine. Under the hood AJ lost count of how many horses he put in there, but every time they were to use the GMC van, AJ insisted a bail of hay was in there somewhere. There was still a bail of hay sitting on the back seat from last time AJ was in it when they opened the door. Yet the absence of AJ was very noticeable.
Slashalot checked everything over in the GMC and then made his way to the cockpit of the plane, beginning his preliminary checks. Ashbury slid in alongside him in the co-pilot seat.
“Think we'll find him?” He asked
“We'd better” Replied Slashalot, who was pressing buttons and fiddling with dials. “Otherwise LGB will have that match on his own at Slam”
“Oh aye, that match.” Ashbury prodded at the onboard computer, inputting co-ordinates. “It's a bit of a dangerous one to be alone in. Oblivion and Moor on one side and Bonnie with Doc on the other? It's like being in the caverns of despair when you have the Azure Dragon twins at one end and the Ogre brothers of Kashaka on the other.”
Slashalot grunted in reply. “You saying Bonnie is an ogre, or a dragon?”
Ashbury laughed “Bonnie is quite clearly Dragon. She's fierce, intelligent and very dangerous if you get on the wrong side of her. I don't know whether to feel sorry for AJ more now or when she gets her hands on him. I know he's got some sort of demon possess thing going on, but never attack someone like Bonnie like that. Now she has her friend Doc involved as well. It's basically a two dragon situation right there and LGB would be the slab of meat if AJ doesn't make it.” He sighed
“Then you have the ogres. Big mean crazy guys in Oblivion and Wade. You have one guy that's basically a creepy god like thing and another that's pretty much Aquaman. It's pretty difficult to hold your own against those 4. It'd be like getting thrown to the wolves with a steak around your neck.”
“Just makes it more important we fix him, don't it?” Said Slashalot as the plane engines fired up. “Amy here yet?”
“Yeah, LGB too. We're ready to go. Apparently, Bonnie is meeting us at the airfield.”
Slashalot nodded, before he started to taxi the plane to the runway. He pressed the button on the intercom.
“OK gang, we're going now, you know how plane travel works. We'll get there in about an hour.”
Bonnie was waiting for them as they pulled up in the GMC next to her car.
“Hi ya'll.” She greeted them. “This airfield yours? Seems a little abandoned.”
“We use it for games where we need an abandoned airfield. It's made to look as creepy as possible. See those buildings there? They're pretty much a full airport terminal. We've got the maintenance buildings across the runway here and a good number of hangars.” Said Amy. “Oh and a fairground, just behind us here. We land at our functional airfield a couple of miles away.”
Bonnie looked at LGB, who just looked back at her and shrugged. The sort of shrug as if to say “Yeah, me too. Just go with it.”
“Last we knew, AJ was around this part of the state. It would be logical for him to come here. He loves this place, and it's easy to make your way to anywhere if you can fly a chopper like he can. We should go speak to Old Man Peabody, he's the guy who runs this area for us. He should be able to tell us if AJ's been around. Come on, he'll be in his office.” Amy suggested
The five of them started making their way towards a small building on the outskirts of the fairground that had now come into view when they passed the hangar. The moss and weeds had started to take over the buildings here, large patches of nature reclaiming the land around the fairground gave it an air of abandonment. In the distance, they failed to see a small plume of dust and a reflective glint come from the hills that framed the fairground.
“I don't like this feeling” said LGB, it's not feeling right.
“Don't worry.” Slashalot said calmly. “Nothing is out here other than Old Man Peabody and his staff.”
Just as he said that, there was a menacing hiss come from near the bushes followed by a rustling. Everyone stopped, frozen in their tracks. A howl came from the bush. Ashbury went to investigate with a little trepidation, moving the branches slightly he couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. “Nothing here!” He shouted before turning back. He didn't notice the small scorpion crawling up his leg until it was too late. It was now on his hand. He shouted to the others and Amy noticed the little creature stinging away like it was in some sort of mad frenzy. “Ow ow ow ow” he shouted, shaking it off and giving it a kick, punting it into the bushes. “Scorpions? Here?” He asked, sounding somewhat vague and not all there. “I feel a little funny guys, do we have any snacks?”
Amy moved over to him to see what was going on. She checked his hand and his eyes. “You're going to feel a little fuzzy, but you'll be fine. That scorpion just messes with your head a little, you're gonna feel just a little high is all.”
Ashbury giggled “You look like a girl” he said before pointing to LGB. And he looks like a little doggy.”
“Fuck you!” Shouted LGB, starting toward Ashbury.
“Don't take him seriously.” Said Amy, “he's hallucinating. He's also ok to carry on. Lead the way, doggy.” She smiled at LGB as he gave her the best not impressed look you can give while wearing a mask.
Eventually, they got to the building and knocked on the door. After a few minutes a man in his 50s opened, quickly looked at the group and gave a big smile.
“Amy!” He exclaimed. “How pleased to see you! What brings you here?” He was warm and friendly enough, but never went to the point of touching her.
“Have you seen AJ?” She asked. “He's disappeared and, well, he's changed. We think he's around here somewhere.”
“What do you mean, changed?” He asked
“Well, like possessed, he's gone a bit wild and just isn't himself you know?” Amy tried to explain with mixed success as she felt.
“That'll explain it then.” Said Peabody. “My staff are being terrorised by something, they keep saying it's some sort of demon. I say they're just trying to shirk off work. Go to the fairground, that's where they're working when it happens.”
“When what happens?” Asked Amy, quizzicaly.
“You'll know when you see it. I'd go now, according to the staff, it's about this time of the day that they say it happens. Normally near the carousel.” Replied Peabody. “Yes, near the carousel and sometimes by the hall of mirrors.”
“Thanks, Peabody.” Said Amy. “We'll let you know when we have him. Until we do, stay out of the way, he's dangerous.”
“Of course, of course, you kids do what you have to do.”
With that, the group started to make their way toward the inside of the fairground.
“Did anything seem odd to you about that?” Asked LGB.
“What, other than him being a giant bear and you being a talking dog?” Came the rather wasted reply of Ashbury
“I'm not a fucking dog.” Was the response from LGB.
“Quiet, you two.” whispered Slashalot. “We're making too much noise. If AJ is here, we need to capture him.”
Ashbury made a rather clumsy attempt to do the zipping his mouth shut action, trying to suppress his giggles. LGB silently shook his head. Bonnie and Amy were bringing up the rear, keeping their eyes peeled for danger.
They approached the carousel. A rather sad horse affair, with a broken unicorn as one of the rides and old paint, peeling from the years of disrepair. It was getting dark now and the whole space gave off the aura of “For fuck sake, let's just go back”.
Slashalot looked to the group. “Be careful.” He commanded, “anything can ha-” He was interrupted by the carousel jerking into life with a mechanical thud and the loud jingle of the sort of music time forgot. A whirl of colour and noise greeted the gang as they stood by the carousel. Ashbury was mesmerised and LGB fidgeted nervously. Amy and Bonnie looked on in silence.
It wasn't until the third or fourth revolution that they saw the ghostly apparition, it was wearing a floral hawaian shirt and straw hat. The apparition laughed maniacally and pointed at LGB. “YOU'RE NEXT” it shouted before it seemingly started to walk toward him. LGB looked around, nervously. The apparition was inches away from him now. Everyone else was frozen, not knowing what to do. The apparition seemingly looked into LGB's eyes and laughed, before disappearing. When he disappeared, he disappeared with a wave of water, covering LGB from head to toe. Everyone looked at each other in shock. Ashbury laughed.
“OK, what the fuck?” Was the first thing that anyone said. It was Amy.
Slashalot appraised the situation and quickly deduced they should get out of here. Bonnie meanwhile was checking where the apparition appeared, then where it walked to, muttering to herself.
The group cautiously moved away from the carousel, which was once again silent. Heading toward the hall of mirrors which was across the other side of the fairground. They were moving in silence now, events freaking them out a little. Amy heard a moan coming from a pen nearby and stopped to catch it properly, as the others continued it was a soft moan. The moan got louder and closer until it was almost in Amy's ear. She felt a breath on her neck. “IT's here” came the whisper. She turned around in a flash and saw nothing there, the darkness was enveloping the pen and she couldn't see very far. She shivered and caught up with the group with a run.
Slashalot was outside the building now, with his fingers to his lips. They could hear animalistic screaming coming from inside. He motioned for them to follow him and entered the building in silence. The rest of the group followed. Ashbury trying to stifle giggling, LGB shivering due to being cold and wet and Amy looking around in a panic. Only Bonnie seemed to have it together. Slashalot was impressed.
Inside the hall of mirrors the reflections of the party were bouncing off every surface. Some in weird shapes and angles, some elongated or stretched, others normal. The screaming was louder inside the room, coming from somewhere in the middle, Slashalot figured. He followed the corridors slowly and silently with the others behind him, wary of the odd shapes projected toward him. The corridor opened up to a square room approximately 10ft long on each side. Slashalot saw in the mirrors about 20 versions of AJ standing there screaming. He signalled for the others to hold back while he walked into the centre of the room, surveying the scene. AJ was in each mirror looking at him and snarling, pointing and taunting him. Slashalot stared back at one of the versions of AJ, and then closed his eyes.
Amy could see that Slashalot was standing as still as a cat. She could only see him from behind and couldn't really make out what he was doing. The lights went out, a scream happened and the lights came back on. Slashalot was pinning down AJ and one of the mirrors was no longer there. It was a door leading to a dark corridor.
“AJ?” Asked Amy. “What are you doing?”
“That's not AJ.” Stepped up Bonnie.
Everyone looked at her now as if to say “Eh?”
“I saw the holographic projector at the carousel, I also noticed the water bucket launched in LGB's direction while everyone was looking at the apparition. The footprints coming from this corridor are wet, indicating the same person who attacked LGB was the same person screaming here. I also know that if this was AJ, he wouldn't be as calm as he is now. No, this is someone else.”
She pulled away the mask.
“OLD MAN PEABODY?” Came the exclamation from everyone.
“Yes, it was me, me all along. I set up the holographic Broseidon at the carousel, I set up the AJ hall of mirrors. I just wanted to get rid of the staff, they are paid too much and they're lazy. So I wanted to get them to quit. I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for you snooping pricks.” Came the rather terse reply from Old Man Peabody.
“What about the attack on me? By the pen, when we were on the way to the hall of mirrors? IT's coming, you said.” Asked Amy.
“Oh, I don't know about that. That wasn't me” Peabody replied, confused. “I have no idea what you're talking about. As soon as I picked up the bucket, I went through the hidden underground corridor to here to set up my AJ costume.”
Everyone looked at Amy at this point. Bonnie took charge. “We've got to get out of here. Now.”
They all fled as quickly as possible. Running down the corridor, through a few dozen rooms and out through the secret underground passage the corridor led them through. It came back up after a short while and they burst through the door, back to the airfield they started from. Night had fully fallen now and they were all panting with exertion and excitement. Bonnie looked at the rest of the guys.
“You guys get in your ride, I've got mine here. He's after me so he'll come for me first.” She was already getting in her car as she was saying this. “Don't know why you're standing there, go! I'll draw him off.” She put the car in gear and started to drive away.
Just after she had gone and the gang made their way to their GMC van, they saw headlights coming toward them along the tarmac, with a horn beeping it's way to them.
“What's this?” Asked Amy.
“I don't know,” replied LGB. It looks like a van.
The van was visible now in the light of their own headlights, which were turned on by proximity control, as that's how cool the van was. The van was green and had “Mystery Machine” written on the back. 4 figures got out of the van, carrying a large object of some sort. They were arguing.
“For Christ's sake Velma, stop being such a stick in the mud! We're giving him back and that's that!” Came a female voice.
“But it's illogical to do so! Came the response. For all you know, they could be bad guys or something!” Was the response, presumably by Velma.
A guys voice came through this time “Would you both please just stop? I've had it with your bickering. Ever since Shaggy screwed up that case and got it totally wrong and we got stiffed on the money, you guys have been just all over each other. It's that stoner idiot you should be shouting at!”
“Whaaaa? Is that you Fred?” Asked Shaggy, in a stoned voice.
“Never mind, ass.” They were with the group now, they dumped the bag on the floor. “I believe this one's yours? Was annoying some people up in the hills earlier so picked him up. Got told he owned this place. We saw your van through our binoculars when we were staking the joint out and figured you would be looking for him.”
He kicked the bag, hearing a hiss coming from it.
“He's a dangerous one, you definitely want him and not want us to throw his ass off a cliff?” He pulled in close to Amy “We've done it before, you know?” He said in a low voice.
“No, no, I think we'll take it from here.” Said Amy.
“That's what I like to hear, now about our payment.” Continued Fred “We don't do this shit for free, our fee is 10 thousand and at least 20 bags of Scooby snacks. The family sized ones, now, don't be cheap. Hey, you've got a nice puppy.” He looked at LGB when he said this.
“I'M NOT A FUCKING DOG!” Came the response, quickly followed by a dropkick to the face.
“We are, I'm just puzzled as to why he'd go back to Slam so shortly after escaping here. Whatever has possession of him really hates Bonnie.” Replied Amy, not looking up from the map. “For what it's worth, he was last sighted here.
