OFF CAMERA
The scene opens as I find myself in bed in a room that looks extremely familiar to me, I look around the darkened room and make out the shape of a small chest of drawers resting against the wall to my left, the bed I’m in is resting against the wall to my right. I can barely see anything else, but I feel different somehow, I feel smaller, and younger. The door to the bedroom opens, letting the light coming from the hallway pour into the room, allowing me to visualise more of my surroundings and I see Batman posters on the walls, my bedcovers covered in Batman symbols, what the Hell is all this? I lift up my duvet cover and notice that I’m wearing Batman pyjamas, not to mention, I’m not even a man, I’m a small boy. I look up to the door as a tall slender woman walks in, her shoulder length light brown hair clings to the sides of her perfectly shaped head, she’s dressed in a plain, long sleeved red turtleneck jumper, a black skirt that travels down her long legs, stopping at her knees, a pair of tights and a pair of black high heeled stilettos. She sits on the side of my bed and switches on the bedside lamp, which, yes you’ve guessed it, is a Batman bedside lamp. When the light comes on and I look into her deep blue eyes, I recognise her straight away, my mother.
Mum: How come you’re still awake sweetie?
Matt: I had a nightmare…
Mum: Aww, you poor baby…
She leans forward and kisses my forehead with her ruby lips which leaves a faint lip shaped mark on my forehead. My mother notices this and laughs a little before she takes a white handkerchief from her pocket; she licks the end of it and washes the lipstick mark from my forehead.
Mum: There we go…
Suddenly we’re disturbed by the arrival of a tall man who enters the room; he has short dark brown hair along with a five o clock shadow. Dressed in a plain black sweater and a pair of black tracksuit bottoms, he walks over to the two of us, and as he gets further into the light, I realise it’s my father.
Dad: Lucy, dinner’s ready…
Mum: I’ll be down in a minute David; Matthew had a nightmare so I’m just tucking him back into bed.
My Dad walks over to me and crouches down beside me and strokes his hand through my hair before giving me a reassuring smile.
Dad: Matthew, whatever happens, just remember that your mother and I will always be around to protect you…understand?
I nod as he leans forward and gives me a kiss on my forehead before both my parents get to their feet and make their way towards my bedroom door.
Matt: Mum…Dad…I love you…
Mum: And we love you too sweetie…goodnight…
Matt: Goodnight…
My parents then leave the room and close the door behind them as I turn onto my side and try to get to sleep. After a few moments of moving around, trying to get comfortable, I suddenly jolt upright in my bed when I hear the sound of a window being broken coming from downstairs, shortly following the sound of the breaking window, I hear arguing, I hear my mother, father and another male voice, one I don’t recognise. What the Hell is going on? I throw back my duvet cover and climb out of bed before making my way over to the door; I quietly open it and walk out onto the landing. I make my way towards the stairs leading downstairs and I head down a few of them and sit down and look through one of the gaps in the banister. I notice a broken window in the corner of my eye but I’m more focused on the fact that I am witnessing a man completely dressed from head to toe in black, he has a large knife in his right hand and he’s pointing it straight at my parents, my father standing in front of my mother to protect her, a phone in his right hand.
Dad: I swear if you don’t leave right now, I’m calling the police!
Man: If you call the police, I’ll kill the both of you right here…now do the sensible thing and give me your damn money!
My father then begins to call the police on the phone, however the man suddenly plunges the knife straight into my father’s stomach, causing him to drop the phone. The man pulls the knife out of my father before repeating the same thing several times as my mother screams, pleading for him to stop. Once the man pulls the knife out of my father for the final time, I watch in horror as my father falls to his knees, and then to the floor as a pool of blood begins to slowly grow beneath his motionless body. My mother, who is in floods of tears dives for the phone, however the man drives the knife straight into her back causing her to instantly drop to the floor in a heap, most likely because he possibly severed her spinal cord, paralysing her. But this man was sadistic and obviously didn’t even want a paralysed witness to remain breathing, so he finished her off by cutting her throat before searching through my father’s pocket and taking his wallet and then swiping my mother’s handbag off the table and disappearing out of the house.
Matt: Mum? Dad?
Neither of them respond, they both just lay there motionless as I notice a pool of blood now growing under where my mother’s body lays. I quickly make my way downstairs and kneel down beside them both. I shake them both, hoping for them to show signs of life as tears begin forming in the corners of my eyes.
Matt: Mum! Dad! Wake up! Please wake up!
The entire scene slowly fades to black before I slowly open my eyes and look down at my parent’s gravestones, situated here in the New York City Marble Cemetery. I am dressed in a silver neck chain, the latest black short sleeved ‘Outlaw’ T-shirt, a pair of silver wrist chains, a black leather jacket, a pair of dark blue jeans with chains hanging down both sides and a pair of black boots. A single tear slowly travels down my cheek as I place my right hand on my mother’s gravestone.
Matt: I wish you could have been here to see me succeed in my passion, to see me marry the woman of my dreams…and to see my children, your grandchildren, born. You were taken from me too early…I was only five years old…I was left with nobody. That bastard took you from me, forced me to grow up without a family, without my parents! But through all the tough times I have had in my life, whether it was having my friends turn against me, my brothers trying to kill me, losing unborn children…through all that…I’ve had some good times as well, becoming a successful wrestler, marrying the most beautiful woman I have ever met, having two lovely children who I adore with all my heart. I believe it’s time to call it quits, I believe it’s time for me to hang up my wrestling boots and be there for my children, something you two weren’t able to do because your lives were taken away…
I stroke my left hand over my near bald head.
Matt: I’ve accomplished everything I have wanted to accomplish throughout my wrestling career and I’m happy to end my career now. Not to mention, I don’t wish to get in the way of Stacy who has recently come out of her shell and started making a name for herself and achieving big things so I want to be out of the way so she’s not constantly living in my shadow for the rest of her career. I’m coming up twenty seven in May this year, and it’s not really an age that wrestlers retire at unless they have suffered a major injury that has prevented them from being able to continue wrestling. But I feel comfortable doing this now, I mean, I know it’ll be hard for me at first, not being able to get into the ring and do what I love to do, but I owe it to myself, to Stacy and to my kids to hang my boots up for good, and call an end to my wrestling career.
I take my hand off the gravestone and move a few steps back from the gravestones.
Matt: I love you Mum and Dad…
I then place my hands into my jacket pockets and walk away off camera as the scene fades.

The scene re-opens a few days later as I am stood here in the interview area, backstage at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado dressed in a silver neck chain, the latest black short sleeved ‘Outlaw’ T-shirt, a pair of silver wrist chains, a black leather jacket, a pair of dark blue jeans with chains hanging down both sides and a pair of black boots. Standing beside me and looking into the camera, dressed in a dark grey suit, a white shirt, a blue tie and a pair of black polished leather shoes is WCF Interviewer, Hank Brown.
Hank: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this WCF.com Exclusive with me, Hank Brown and joining me at this time, ‘The Outlaw’ Matthew Robinson…thanks for joining me Matthew…
Matt: No problem Hank…
Hank: Well I’d like to start off with the eventful week you had last week if I may…you faced off against Jordan Caliban in a match that had somewhat become a little bit personal, and you ended up walking out with the victory, what are your thoughts on the match?
Matt: Well like I said before I faced him, Caliban is a tough wrestler, and he’s a good wrestler too…his only problem is his big mouth gets him into a lot of trouble…as well as some of his actions, as in, trying to feel up my wife during her match with him. I went out there wanting to beat some respect into him, whether I did that or not remains to be seen, but I showed him that I’m not someone who can be beaten easily…
Hank: After your match, the WCF Director of Operations, Mr. Joey Nitro came out with a group of masked men carrying nightsticks, the same group of men that assaulted Chase Michaels two weeks ago on Slam before Nitro suspended him. As you were being beaten down by these men, Michaels would shock the WCF Universe and Mr. Nitro, by disobeying his suspension and coming to your aid. What is your take on this situation?
Matt: Well Nitro has a lot of balls if he wants to try and make an example out of the likes of Chase and I by having some masked thugs beat us down. We don’t take too kindly to that kind of thing, never have and never will. I’m thankful that Chase helped me out, I would have done the same for him and it’s because we have a mutual respect for one another, and we both hate Nitro’s guts.
Hank: Well this week you find yourself in a very interesting match-up, you’re teaming with your wife, the WCF People’s Champion, Stacy Robinson and Chase Michaels to take on the Television Champion, Brent Alpine and two thirds of Sequitus, Cormack MacNeill and Jordan Ciserano. The TV title will be on the line meaning you, your wife or Chase could walk out of the Pepsi Center as the new TV Champion, what are your thoughts on this match?
Matt: It sure will be an interesting match, I’ve wanted to get my hands on Ciserano ever since he attacked me after my match last week against Caliban, as for Alpine and MacNeill, I think I’m going to enjoy facing off against MacNeill as the guy loves a good fight, and I can’t wait to beat the holy Hell out of Alpine since all that guy does is make himself look like he’s the greatest thing to ever walk the fucking planet! As for the Television Championship, I think I’ll leave that for Chase or my wife to win…
Hank: And why don’t you want to win the Television Championship?
Matt: Because after much deliberation and thought, I have decided that my match this Sunday on Slam will be my last…I am officially announcing that I am retiring from professional wrestling.
Hank: Really? But…why?
Matt: Hank, I’ve achieved everything I have ever wanted to achieve in this industry…and more…it’s a shame I never got to win any championships in this company…but over the years since I first started wrestling in 2008, I have had thirteen championship reigns, I’m a three time Hall of Fame inductee and I’m a Grand Slam Champion. It’s time I called it a day and spent time looking after my children, something my parents never had the opportunity to do with me when I was growing up. I’ve had my time in this line of work, now it’s time for my wife to show all of you what she is capable of, without having me hovering around and holding her back…it’s the dawn of a new era…
Hank: Well Matt, I guess all I can say is good luck in your match on Sunday and…it’s been great working with you…
He outstretches his arm for a handshake that I accept before he turns back to the camera.
Hank: Well that’s all we have time for folks, make sure to tune into Slam this Sunday to see if Matthew Robinson will be on the winning team in what will be his final ever professional wrestling match…I’ve been Hank Brown and you’ve been watching the WCF.com Exclusive…goodnight!
The two of us continue to chat as the scene fades.
