His knees are planted firmly into the hardwood, palms pressed flat to one another, a crucifix of Christ standing before him.
CHRIS AVERY: Please, no more tag matches with these honkeys. I can’t do them anymore. The honks lose all work ethics for these tag charades, some of them barely show up, or just hang around the outside corners talking to fans in the audience or sometimes they’ll stop to clip their nails when someone needs a tag. They’re never taken seriously, yet the big whitey in charge continues to book these hideous spectacles week in and week out. No, not you, Jesus, I’m referring to Seth Lerch.
The copper bell sounds, bouncing off the church walls and filling it with a deep roar of chimes.
CHRIS AVERY: Was that a sign? Oh, thank you, Jesus. Ring the bell one more time if I will win this Sunday…
Nothing from the bell, nothing but a voice that comes from.. THE CRUCIFIX? JESUS?!
JESUS: You will not win this Sunday, Chris.
He falls deeper onto the floor, in awe of the Jesus voice.
CHRIS AVERY: But why, Jesus, why?!
A moment’s pause, then the powerful voice erupts once more from the cross.
JESUS: Because you’re black.
It’s too much for Chris to take, especially hearing this from the almighty. He breaks into tears and flees the Lord’s sanctuary. Seth Lerch steps out from behind the crucifix, chuckling, revealing himself as the source of the voice.
