Correct me if I'm wrong, but Cena wasn't getting booed when he first won the WWE Championship like Roman Reigns is now (I know it's Reigns' third...er...reign, but they're treating it like his first). If they think it's bad for Reigns now, what's it going to be like when he's held the title twelve more times?

You're right!, there was a while he was legitimately over as a face. The problem is that I don't think WWE gives a crap about if he's cheered or booed, they care that he's getting a reaction. No amount of booing is going to change anything.

I completely understand the basics of that thought process Seth, and why they may have it, but what gets to me is, they could literally (*gives Caleb Ronan his royalty fee*) pick any guy off the street who could fall on his back and fans would hate him for the same reasons and give the same big, negative reaction. Is that how they want to build their top stars? I hope everyone will understand what I mean.

Yes, I agree with you 100%! Absolutely. And all in all I think a face that casual fans and internet fans alike can get behind has a lot more drawing potential than someone like Reigns, all things considered.
Also, even at his worst, Cena was a more interesting character than Reigns with a lot more marketing potential. I don't really get it.

I think if there was no John Cena, Roman Reigns would be over more with the crowd. The trouble is that the fans saw what the WWE were doing with Roman from a mile away and said "Here we go, another Cena." It's almost not fair to Roman, although I'm sure he doesn't feel bad when he gets his paycheck.

This is a big part of what Austin was talking about as well, and he brings up a ton of good points as well. If guys here have the time and are interested, this is a very insightful, unbiased view from the rattlesnake himself.

When Cena first got drafted to RAW and was WWE Champion, he was over as fuck. Then he started going on his Super Cena run and by early 2006 he was getting booed like a mother fucker.

I got back into wrestling just as Cena was starting to get booed in 2005. I was interested in seeing him because I knew he was the top star. It was disappointing. He was saying things like Jonathon Coachman was as cool as "crap in his pants" and Kurt Angle was crazier than a "ham sandwich." ... I think it's safe to say that the edge he had was gone. His hardcore rapper gimmick was stripped of the hardcore, which is probably why fans started to hate him.

That was his last hurrah as far as not being PG, imo. But it's really weird to watch that with knowledge of fruity pebbles Cena.

Of course they do. He is top sales for WWE merchandise in the 'under 14' category which is where they get the most sales figures currently. As long as merch sells, they will push him as babyface champ until WWE starts finding Roman Reigns shirts in pawn shops and Goodwill stores.

Roman Reigns merch sales shouldn't factor into anything. If he sells any more merch than anyone else it's because WWE pushes him to be THE guy!, he's not as good on the mic or in the ring as ... most other guys.
At least back in the day I could never argue Rock wasn't good on the mic. Didn't think I'd be arguing that a guy that SUCKS AT EVEYRHING should be the number one man in the company.

You know what's funny about this
The year that Daniel Bryan finally won the title, I bet if roman reigns won THAT royal rumble instead of Batista we all would have been ready to get behind him. That was the height of his popularity with the shield and we all wanted him to have it.
Then they waited... They stopped protecting him with Ambrose and Rollins and everyone began seeing that he wasn't as viable as a singles guy. Everyone saw it except the wwe.

Reigns only got cheered at the end of that Rumble because the other guy was Batista. Roman's popularity was the highest during the last six months of The Shield.

I'm going to express what could be an unpopular opinion, so please get your rotten fruit ready.
Roman's face run has been both boring and predictable. You could call every plot point coming a mile away in your sleep, and his limited moveset has stagnated via the overexposure, yes. Plus he is unable to successfully add anything to the overscripted promos he's been given to work with.
But....I.... Think the crowds are going too far.
I'm painting the bullseye on my face as we speak.
But watch the wrestlemania main event again. The moment Roman's music hits, people are on their feet, screaming at the top of their lungs at him. It is borderline insane the sheer amount of hatred this guy gets.
And I think a lot of it comes from the fact that ever since Boo-tista... The fans have become characters. Or think they have anyway.
I think that the Bryan moment was so authentic and so good that everyone decided that this was how it is going to be from now on. The wwe would listen to us and give us what we wanted.
And that's why the boos are so loud, in my opinion. Not cause Roman is worthy of that level of hatred, but because WWE isn't listening this time. We're kind of taking for granted just how big the Bryan thing was, imo. The fans feel like they changed things once and they can do it again.
And guess who is in the middle of all this frustration when it doesn't happen?
Okay, start throwing. I've just been thinking on this for a bit lol.

You're right, giving in on Bryan set the example that the fans can change WWE's plans. But you know how you avoid a fan rebellion? You read them and give them what they want in the first place. And as I alluded to before, the fans also see another John Cena and are collectively saying "Fuck this. We're not dealing with this again." Then again, we could all stop watching. But that won't happen. So... BOOOOOO! FUCK YOU, ROMAN REIGNS! DIIIIEEE!!!
